I Had Lap Band Surgery 8 Days Ago And I Still Feel Iky...do Others Feel This Way?

Recommended Posts

I don't get it...most of the post I read say that people feel great after the first few days. I'm on day 8 and still don't feel that great. Don't get me wrong...I don't feel horrible, I just don't feel wonderful. My incisions are healing up nicely but my insides still hurt. I feel like there isn't enogh room in there or something (like my torso is too short). sleeping on my left side is hard, bending over to pick something up can be hard too. I went shopping last night and we were out for about an hour and my left side started hurting so bad I had to stop and sit down(almost like the feeling you get when run after drinking too much water). It is still just very tender and sore and I worry it isn't supposed to be.

I am also still having quite a bit of gas???

It's all very normal. The fatigue, the achiness, the gas and fullness. You have to remember that everyone is in such a different physical state going in to this surgery. Some of the variables are age, weight, existing co morbidities. I think most people push themselves too quickly and are anxious to just get on with their lives and the weight loss journey. My advice would be: give yourself time to rest, heal, and recover. You WILL feel like yourself again. Go easy.

I agree this is totally normal I wasn't feeling it either I just kept pushing to get better, due to having to return to work in a couple of days. Hang in there it will pass and for the gas get you some Gas X and Milk of Mag for Constipation its works believe me.

I was banded Dec22 and I am in same boat -gurgling, side pain, and do not pick up that lint on the floor! cause it will hurt, sitting in front of PC kinda uncomfortable too, I figure all the brusing and swelling inside,,, slow n easy, some faster healers than others, I still have my bruise when they drew blood pre- op! Hang in there,,,

It took me a little while to feel better. I was expecting a much quicker turn around. I emailed the doctors office on day 7 saying I wasn't feeling well. His nurse responded quickly, that I needed to increase my fluids. She felt, based on my description (much the same as yours) that I was getting dehydrated. I took her advise and was amazed at how quickly things turned around. I was pushing too hard to get back to exercising and 'normal' life. I also have a five year old who didn't quite understand that Mom couldn't play like normal. Let me tell you, when I finally started feeling physically better at two weeks, the first thing I did was some controlled rough-housing with my little one. He loved having Mom back and I needed to do something normal again.

Increasing my fluids definitely helped me get over the "Icky" stage. As I was told by numerous people in the chat room, you have to give yourself time to heal from the inside. It doesn't help to push yourself too hard and have recovery become even longer. Take things one day at a time, increase your fluids and you will be moving around pain free in no time.

My surgery was on Dec. 21st. Today is really the first day I've felt back to normal. Still some pain at port site, but feeling better.

Even though the band is a laproscopic surgery and usually same day, it's still major surgery! Just listen to your body. It's going to tell you what you can do. Today, I felt great when I got up, so I decided to clean the house and get the Christmas decorations down. Only got the kitchen cleaned up and some laundry done, and I felt wiped out! I stopped right when I started feeling bad. This is a major part of this whole journey and healing is crucial.

I hope you start feeling better!!!!

It's funny you would post this. I had my surgery the same day as you and I felt the same way today!!!! It's strange how much things changed over the last 2 days.

I had my surgery on the 20th and felt great the first week. As a matter of fact, at my first post-op appointment I told the doctor I was doing so well and couldn't believe how good I felt. Then...it hit. For three days now I have had piercing pain on my left side and now it is radiating up into my jaw. I have taken gas-ex and am trying to drink as much Water as possible. I have spent much time laying on my left side hoping that it is just gas pain and it will work its way out. No luck yet. I just feel terrible.

Not that I am happy that anyone else is suffering, but I'm happy to hear that what I am experiencing might just be normal.

Oh man...I didn't have any pain in my jaw. That sounds awful!!! I hope it gets better soon. Maybe you should add a post and ask others about it.

Feeling better today, thank goodness! Definitely gas/digestion issues causing the pain in my side. As for my jaw, not sure what that is from. Hope you all are well!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
