Tastes Changing After Lap Band Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

Is anyone else experiencing this? since I have all but cut out sugar in my diet, ( I still eat some on special occassions), I have noticed that my coffee has gone from 2 equals to 1, to none. I add a little nutmeg for flavor, AND i've noticed that if I want wine, it's gotta be a red, not a real dry red, but a red none the less. I come from drinking Zinfindel, which is now uber sweet to me. Also, I was at a craft fair with a friend the other day, and she was looking at the pastries, and I thought to myself, ewe, they just look too sweet! It actually looked gross to me.

On thanksgiving there were a ton of pies, and I gravitated toward the healthier ones, that werent ultra sweet, although I tasted the cheesekace, but was happy with the taste, I didn't want any more.

I'm 6 months out from surgery. I monitor my carbs, and try to keep them low, although I am not always successful. I avoid sugar.

I also have cut out almost all sugar. I am allowed 2 grams per entree (directions given by nutritionist). I stick to it religously. I have noticed things tasting sweeter than before. I have cut down the amount of splenda in my hot tea. Isn't it great that foods that have a lot of sugar look unappetizing!!! I love it!!!

The only thing that I have noticed as far as tastes changing is with Crystal Light. That used to be all I drank, not much plain Water but now it is way too sweet. I just gave all my boxes away because I can't stand it. Weird.... I wasmtold that could happen but was sort of surprised.

Yes this happened to me as well. I used to love chocolate...any kind, any where. Now I only like dark chocolate and only a small amount. Weird.

I also now eat yogurt regularly and two months ago, I wouldn't have eaten it, ever! It tastes really good. That is a big surprise to me.

thank you! This change in pallet took me completely by surpise, especially since my surgeons office said that band patients typically don't experience taste changes.

I swear it must change your hormones having to do with taste and mostly, almost planning my day around the next meal!, "need" to eat til you're stuffed, etc! Now, and almost from the beginning, it's like I'm in a skinny person's head!-- I used to survive on pizza and other carbs-- I'm ashamed to say that in the past, it was common for me to eat a whole pizza myself while watching TV! Now, I am satisified with one bowl of homemade, healthy soup!

But on the realistic side, my experienced Weight Watcher friend said that often, when you switch from primarily carbs to healthy, natural stuff, your body chemistry does change and thus, your likes and dislikes for what it "needs."

Whatever it is, THANK YOU FOR THE BAND!!! We are all so smart to have made this decision! Keep up the good work, everyone!

I can relate to this topic. Before my surgery when I s on my liquid diet I was using the Protein Drinks and drinking broth and sugar free Jello and crystal light packets in my Water. Immediately after surgery I couldn't stand the smell of the Protein drinks, the sugar free jello and crystal light packs are all way too sweet. I have been really good with not eating sweets/candy but on thanksgiving I did enjoy a big piece of pecan pie. My treat to myself present.gif

Thank you. I thought I was the only one.

I've always had a heightened sense of smell and taste. But just yesterday, I was sitting with my husband in a restaurant and all of the sudden I had this strong smell of grapefruit. I asked my husband if he smelled it. He didn't. It drove me crazy. When we got up, I saw that someone at the bar had a grapefruit peel in their martini type drink. It seems like I can smell everything.

I also noticed my tastes changing. I used to love the SF flavored coffee Creamers. Now they are way to sweet and the smell makes me naseus.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
