No required liquid diet, should i do it anyway?

Recommended Posts

As far as I know, my Dr is not requiring me to do the dreaded 2 week pre op liquid diet...only instructions I have been given so far is to drink Clear Liquids the day before surgery...has anyone here decided to do the liquid diet even though you weren't required to? What are the benefits? More importantly, what the heck did you drink for two weeks, and how did you not kill someone? Lol!!

I was not required to do a liquid diet before hand, what I was told to do was more low carb/ low fat. I was already on the Atkins diet so there was really no change for me. I was actually surprised to see everyone talking about the pre-op liquid diet on here because I never heard about it ! My surgery went fine so I guess each doctor has their own way of shrinking the liver! I think the low carb thing is MUCH easier than liquid!

I wonder if I could just throw my liver in the dryer to shrink it, it works for all my clothes ;-) LOL

I see you go to the same office I do, I have Dr. Ryder.

What I've done since I have the same exact paperwork you do, is, I've been decreasing solid foods and increasing the liquid Proteins so that tomorrow when I have to do clear liquid only, I won't be a total bear.

I was told to go on a 10 day Protein Shake only diet. I tried it, and I failed. The amount of Protein they expected me to get without having anything else was just too much for my body to handle, believe it or not. I was throwing up every day. I'm still on my pre op diet, but now I've switched shakes, drink between 2-3 daily, and if I think I need it, I allow myself some actual food. For instance, yesterday I had a slice of cheese, today, I'm going to have a little bit of grilled chicken. I've lost 8 pounds in 5 days so I think that's decent. Hoping to lose another 5-7 pounds but we'll see! I'm not stressing out about it! Others may not agree, but this was the best route for me. Good luck!

I've become addicted to Isopure Zero Carb bottles, 40 grams of protein per 20 oz bottle, no carbs, no sugars, no fats, only 160 caloies. They are fruity and light, not shake like at all!! They are clear too so they are good for the "clears only" parts of the pre and post op phases. Check your local fitness retailer for them, they usually have them in singles. Isopure also sells the Zero Carb fruity flavors in bulk powder form as well. Same idea, light fruity drinks rather than shakes. It might not have been the amount of protein you were ingesting but the shake itself being too thick or milky for your body.

My requirement is 3 days of clear liquids before surgery. At 220 pounds, my doctor refers to me as his smaller patient!

I am on day 2 of the 8 day pre-op liquid diet...no solid food. God help me. I have done a lot of reading and it seems like the diet is based on the surgeons prefrence so if you are not ordered one be grateful.

Good luck

All surgens are different. Mine required two Protein Shakes a day and one low calorie meal. I think the ones that require all liquid may be just trying to prepare you for the post-op diet

I'm also on the same liquid diet but mine is for 13 days. I have surgery on the 28th. I am amazed I haven't cut my throat yet. lol I am able to drink coffee, tea without sugar, and chicken and beef bullion and Water. The strawberry Protein shake is not too bad but only on day two. Let me know how you do. We should lose lots of weight on this I would think! Good Luck to all.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I am definitely going to try to change my habits somewhat in preparation for the liquids...if I were to wake up from surgery and be told they were unable to place the band, I'd have a fit!

I think the best thing the liquide diet (2 weeks!) did for me was to prepare me for the aftermath. It was not so hard for me to do liquids only after surgery.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
