Sharp chest pains 6 days before surgery

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for THIS Friday (11/18) I'm REALLY nervous as I've been having chest pains the past

2 weeks, some tightness in my chest and one day it was really sharp pains. I had my scope done this week so

while at the hospital they did EKG and stress test. Claims I'm "normal" but why am I still having chest pains???

Not sure if this is a sign that maybe I shouldn't go through with this or not. I'm scared if I don't, I'll easily be 400

pounds by next year but on the other hand, I want to wake up after surgery!!!

Call and talk to your doctor. It may be anxiety. It can manifest itself that way. Your doctor will give you the advice you need.

Think you might have a hernia or an ulcer? They'll probably find anything like that during band surgery.

400 lbs is a lot more dangerous than band surgery. You need to talk to your doctor and check your odds.

I hope you have a positive outcome.

Yes, I do have a hernia. But would that cause chest pains? The doctor knows about the hernia but

said he can't fix it at the same time as lap band surgery (unfortunately)

You could have gall stones, many other things that you really need to get sorted out before you do anything else.

Whatever you have wrong, at the time of surgery, your Dr. will more then likely fix.. If it is Gallbladder, (someone asked me if it felt like a Heart Attack? I said yes !) You will feel a lot better with it out. Hernia Repair (Don't do lifting..) If you will be looking at 400Lbs. You have to just give it a quick thought on if you want to live or not ! That's a whole different story then surgical repair, and removal.

I had the Lymph nodes in the Groin removed, (he thought they were cancerous, ) and a Hernia repair that was dug out, and the flesh seared to seal the tear the size of a fist... Ouch ! I weighed 356 at my highest weight....

But I could not be healthier, it was the right move.

Don't make a mistake ! Get yourself fixed up..

Any questions ? email me, and I will answer if I can.

Shirley.

Anxiety can cause those pains. A family member of mine ended up in the ER because of anxiety related issues. All tests came back normal too. It's understandable to be nervous, but in all seriousess, where is the best place to have a problem? At a hospital with your doctors right by your side! I'm getting banded this Friday as well, I was 350 when I started the whole banding process, but I was able to drop down to 336 last Thursday. I'm 33, Married and have 2 kids, so I fully understand the mental pressure. But I know, that if I don't do this and I don't get healthier, my boys are going to grow up without a dad. And I do NOT want that to happen!

Don't over think things. Absolutly tell your doc about the pains, see if they can check for a gallbladder problem or if s/he is just going to let it ride and take a look first hand. Either way, all of us here on this site are here to support you where we can!

Relax, Breathe, Remember *WHY* you want the band and Stay Strong!

If the pains are not brought on by physical exertion and relieved by rest, they are very unlikely to be cardiac especially given a negative stress test. Likely stress but any other physical causes (gall bladder, hernia, chest injury etc) are much less important /risky in terms of your long term health than your obesity.Good luck with whatever you decide...none of this stuff is an emergency...weight loss surgery is a lifelong lifestyle change so you can wait a bit if you need to. Be good to yourself!

Matt and everyone who responded, THANK YOU!! i don't have much support in this at all. Most people I told are

completely against it, so it's nice to have found this website/forum.

They are going to push my surgery back til Dec. 9, 2011 - i feel so much Peace about that decision. I waiting to hear

back from my family doc and I will ask her to check for gall stone/bladdar issues as well - but they think it was anxiety

which I do suffer from (in the past) but I wasn't hyperventalating or anything so I didn't think anxiety at first.

anyway Matt, I sending you prayers your way and I'm excited for you. I would have been Friday too but I'll be right

behind ya ;) maybe you can share w/ me your experience so I can stop being so nervous!!! :)

No, I'm not 400 pounds yet - weigh in today at 280 - but the rate I'm going it won't take long unless I do something about it.

I was drinking Slim Fast for my liquid diet and I was STARVING. They told me to get the Atkins shake that has more Protein

in it and it suppose to keep me fuller longer, so I will be doing that this week.

Again, thank you all for your support! It means a LOT to me!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
