Eating Two days after surgery

Recommended Posts

OK, first of all I am not bragging. It has been 72 hours since I had my Band installed. I have not had heartburn, gas, bloating or similar discomfort; other than the complications of having a foley and a little back pain. I am still careful when bending and doing the housework. My wife won't even let me use the vacuum. I have to fill the chicken's Water with several trips of small pitchers of water. Atleast I get in my walking. That being said, is there anyone out there that could not resist eating something solid before they were supposed to do so? I am eating finely chopped chicken and well chewed Pringles without difficulty. That should be stage 4 a month out from surgery. Again, I am only 3 days out. I know the Band is empty, but I am worried about nerve damage. Can I not feel what I am supposed to? I haven't been sick. My wife is upset because I keep pushing and nothing bad is happening. The surgeon said to my wife that I could move through the stages quickly if I tolerated it, but this is light speed. I did clean out my system the morning of the surgery even though I was not told to do it. Maybe this helped? I know that I am the minority and I really am grateful. Are there more out there like me?

why would you want to? and be careful, most of the healing is on the inside and with the pouch which we cant see. why get it done if you dont want to follow your doctor's plan? i have had almost no adverse affects but sticking with my doctor's eating plans and so far its working.

I know just how hungry you can get after weight loss surgery, but eating solid foods too soon can cause

your surgery to fail. A surgeon that teaches WLS told me that eating solid foods too early can be one

of the most common causes of early WLS failure. First week Clear Liquids, second week full liquids,

weeks 3 and4, mushies, week five solids cut finely, week six, you're home free. It's hard to stick to

a diet like this, but if you're going to lose weight, you absolutely have to eat properly. Haven't you

read posts from people who "can't lose, no matter what I eat". You went through a lot to get this band,

and you have to work to have it do you any good. The band, by itself won't make you lose one pound,

it's like a lifetime diet with a helper. Give it a chance.

I am following my surgeon's advice. things have moved quickly for me for some reason. Ususally recovery takes 4 to 6 hours. Mine took 90 minutes. I wasn't pushing to leave. They were astonished and just finally said, "go home". I was just wondering if some others have recovered as quickly. My wife had gastric bypass 10 years ago and got no post op diet. the quack just told her to experiment and see what she could handle. I was just using this forum to get feedback from others to share in their experience and learn from them. It is said that during the first few months not to expect weight loss. Well after losing the Water weight from the IV drip I have lost an additional 2 lbs. So while I am not following the diet strictly, I am still following it.

Yes Corrigan, I have read the other posts and wonder why people get this surgery and not follow the instructions. I work in the medical field and I also know that some people are different and the treatment that helps one person does not affect another. I have put alot into this. I made sure to make my own broths so that I would be eating health after surgery. I stocked up on sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello, sugar free cool whip, diet drink mixes and petty of bottles of Water. I have cut out caffiene and acidic foods that may irritate my stomach. I crush my pills to fine powder and buy the more expensive liquid option for medications. I am losing weigh even though my band is still empty. I had a cup of orange Tomato Soup, less acidic than red, this morning and I haven't even though about lunch. I am not complaining about anything. I just wanted to know if there where people out there having less problems than others. I know this is a tool and I have to know how to best use it to make it work for me.

I saw my doctor after a week and he told me I could increase my schedule. I still haven't had a fill. Since my last appt..I think I have lost about 7 lbs which is as good as I was doing but then again, I have only been to the gym once in the 5 weeks. Listen to your body and check in with your surgeon. Everyone is different

I guess I'll be the bad guy... Pringles?? Two days after surgery? Are you kidding me? I don't care how chewed the Pringles are - it's not a good choice.

My thought is that if you can't resist Pringles two days after surgery with a newly sutured band then how are you going to resist cake on Day 6, a plate of lasagna on Day 46, two

big Macs on Day 96?

Get it together! You can do this and do it right. You deserve a happy and healthy life. You didn't go through all this to fail. My nutritional plan allows for "cheat meals" but no freaking way would I eat Pringles two days after surgery.

I apologize for being harsh, blunt, and mean but I'm not going to sit here and say that's it ok and then not offer any encouragement towards healthier habits.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Um, I could have eaten solid food, probably the day of surgery, but I chose to follow my surgeons instructions. You are only risking problems by eating this early on.

What works for one may not work for another. Look for support among friends here, follow your Dr instructions, make that decision to eat healthy (Pringles - really?) and be happy with the newly evolving you. ~ My two cents worth cool.gif

Quit acting like I took a butter knife and carved out the band. My goodness ya'll are harsh and nit picky. Pringles are just mashed up potato flakes and my schedule says stage two includes mashed potatoes. So chill. I'm not looking for approval from anyone. Most of the posts are people having problems with their band. I wondered if I was alone in having none. If I am losing weight and doing fine why should you rail on me? I'm not failing; I'm sailing through just fine. Big Mac? I'll be happy with a Happy Meal, pun intended. That's a far cry from a super sized #1 with a shake for a drink and a Quarter pounder with cheese chaser. Wow, are you the rookie police officer that gives a speeding ticket for doing 56 mph in a 55 mph zone?

Well, here is my two cents, for what it's worth. First of all, trying to pass off pringles as even remotely healthy is a complete joke. I think that most of the folks here are honestly trying to change their mind set about eating and are really trying to make healthy choices. So to read about you eating pringles in your immediate post op phase makes most of us cringe. As my surgeon says, he operates on your stomach, not your head. I, personally would have been terrified to eat solids before I was allowed to. And i am an RN so I know a little bit about healing the body. This is an open forum for lapbanders, everyone approaches this slightly differently but we all have opinions. So take the good with he bad and do what you want with it. Good luck.

I am a RT and a medic, so I too understand about the body healing. Never said Pringles were health food, but seriously, everyone is acting like I need to slit my wrist for doing such a thing. I was looking for others without the mass of problems people are having. Instead I get people glaring down at me like I just kicked the baby Jesus. You're right we all have opinions and mine is to make this my last post and logout for good. Peace!

First off, no one on here is being harsh, they are being honest and real. You can do some serious damage to your "new stomach" eating any kind of solids 3 days post op. your doctor gave you post op instructions for a reason. Second, you came here for advice, and you got advice to not be doing what you are doing. and you did not like what was said so you get mad. if you don't want advice, then don't come here bashing people who are trying to help you.

Tell your doctor what you did and i can almost guarantee that he/she will give you the riot act. Solids are a big no no after surgery, you are still very swollen and you could very well already have Fluid in your band and not know it. i had 3 cc and had no idea until i went for my first fill. Just be careful on what you eat so you don't cause more harm than good. Yes some people progress better than others, but i really feel that pringles and chicken are a bad, bad idea 3 days post op.

And corn chips are a vegetable, right?

Day two and you're sailing. My concern was for month six and setting yourself up for failure with this Pringles are mashed potatoes idea.

I encourage you to do this the right way. Call your surgeon and ask what he/she thinks of pringles on day two. If your plan says any food "as tolerated" on day two then knock yourself out.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
