Recommended Posts

just spend $140 on scratch tickets the other day. i posted in another thread about this but i wanna ask. Now that you can not over eat are there things that you are doing that you shouldnt be in place of the eating? Mine is gambling. others could be drinking, buying clothes or shoes or something?

Mine is couponing. I started doing what some might consider "extreme couponing." It doesn't take much money--only about 6 dollars a week for my papers. I do save money. I also started crocheting again. I need activites at night before bed because I always want to eat at that time.

I would look into Gambling Addiction and try to get some help. I would hate to see you ruin your finances and relationships. It is hard. You just don't wake up from weight lost surgery cured of your food addiction. It is something I battle every day.

Rachel, I too have picked up crocheting again. But due to my age and eyesight, I can only do it in the daytime. I agree that perhaps you should look into GA or find a mental health professional that specializes in addictions.

I've been spending a lot of time playing video games to keep my hands busy and my mouth empty.

Mine is probably wine. I don't (yet) have an addiction, at least physiologically, and there aren't any negative consequences associated with it BUT I look forward to my nightly glass of wine much like I used to look forward to dinner. I think I've had a glass of wine nearly every single day for the past 2-3 months (sometimes 2 glasses) and this is a significant change from pre-surgery when I'd drink wine 1-2x a week. I am to the point where it has occurred to me I should nip this in the bud before I start having problems or become physiologically addicted. It's amazing how subtly it creeps up, too, and then all of a sudden you realize you're transferring over-indulgence in one area to another.

I think you need to seek some help before it gets out of hand. It is known as addiction transfer. You are simply substituting your food addiction with gambling. I would seek out a counselor who specializes in eating disorders, or addiction, whichever you think will be more beneficial. I wish you the best, I think it's great you see the way the tide is turning, so to speak. Good luck!

You need to talk to someone.

You swapt out 1 addiction for another.

This is very common.

I new a guy that was over 400Lbs. , and lost the weight with the Band.

Only to take on Alcohol, and Narcotics...

It's true, having an addictive personality doesn't always change; sometimes addictions get swapped out for other addictions. I personally couldn't imagine spending $140 on scratch tickets!! Oh my goodness! I think that becoming 'addicted' to a healthy hobby would be a better exchange. I like what some posters mentioned about crocheting. I would have to say that my 'addiction' of choice would be geocaching. You can get out and exercise while doing it too!!

Its true. Since I started the Pre-op diet at the beginning of the month and now an on the liquid post-op diet...I find myself wanting to shop and shop and shop. I cant afford it so I try to stay out of the stores now. The bad part is I find myself going on Amazon and wanting to buy stuff on there.

I agree with this poster. I see this frequently when people join AA. they develop another addictions. Often to cigarettes and coffee. It is a very good idea to seek some professional help.

I have lost about 50 pounds in a year with about 30 more to go. i spent a lot of time in shopping malls over the summer. I needed to buy some new clothes, but I also discovered that every mall now has those frozen yogurt shops . You pay by the amount you put in your cups. I only lost 4 pounds in 3 months, because of my desires for the frozen yogurt on a hot day. Thankfully it is getting cooler and my closets are full so my desire for the frozen yogurt is waning. i just hope I can get rid of this left over Halloween candy now!

Yep, it is way common for us to swap out one addiction for another....if we used food as a coping mechanism and now that is short circuited - we struggle to find another way to cope....sometimes we pick healthy options and others not so much...shopping is definately one of mine. :( You should consider going to a therapist and talking through your behaviors - and finding another way to deal with the journey you are on. We are right there with you!

Hang in there!

I think mine has become exercising. I used to hate it but I loved going out dancing. Now I get that same high from jogging every morning and when I miss, I don't feel as good the rest of the day.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
