Almost One Year Lap Band Anniversay

I had my surgery on Sept 13, 2010. It was the lap band. I started my weight loss at 307 and was 287 at the time of my surgery. As of Sept. 6,2011 I have only lost 45 pounds total...I have a 11cc band and at my last fill in August my total in my band was 9 3/4 cc....I do have problems with food getting stuck. I have only been losing a pound or two here and there and regaining it so the dr had me do a metabolic rate and I found out that I only burn 1510 calories....which the dr said means that my metabolism is low...I am considering a surgery reversal and am totally fustrated with my band. If anyone can help me get back on track I would be so grateful...Thank you for the advise.

That's 1500 calories that your body burns if you sit down and do nothing all day. 1500 calories to keep you breathing... That's actually pretty good. Now add in every time you move, eat etc and that number goes up. Add in exercise and you will most certainly have a caloric deficit. Mine is 1485. That the BMR Basal Metabolic Rate...yours truly is average.

Track what you eat...get out and move everyday. 45lbs is better than 0. Some do lose very slowly...if that's you, accept it and keep moving forward. You CAN do this!!!

I went to the Mr. LapBandTalk under Post op and he has a chart about the Green Zone and it sounds to me like you are in the Red Zone and possibly need to have some fill removed so you can eat without it getting stuck. If you read his chart it states that if you band is too full your food will get stuck and your weight will stall.

I would encourage you to buy a pedometer or stepper. Wear it and it will calculate how many steps you are taking every day. Once you know where you are, you can know what you need to do. They say to shoot for 10,000 steps a day. But if you wear the pedometer and your first day say 4000 steps, start from there. Try to increase a 1000 steps the first week, then add 1000 steps each new week until you get to 10,000. That's what happened to me and what I did.

Don't give up, what you have done so far is better than where you were.

I started at 302 and I went back to the doctor again a year ago and finally had surgery 2 weeks ago and weighed 252. I go on Wed for my 2 weeks post op. I'm excited to see what I weigh.

Another suggestion - go back and see what you were doing when you were losing - backtrack - start back doing the liquids and Protein shakes - cut down the calories and carbs and exercise more. It will re-kick your fat burning machine inside. Plateaus happen and our bodies need a jolt to reset them.

How do you get tested for metabolic rate- what type of specialist does this? I need that done!

My band is nice and snug and I try to get 900 calories in per day. It is easy to slack and eat less because I can only eat tiny meals. You have two choices: Burn more with exercise (yuk!) or get filled so you take in less. Good luck...its a lifelong struggle!

HOW can you figure out your basic met rate?? There is a test that tells you how many calories a day you loose?? Would someone please post more info on this? I never heard of this and I would be interested in following-up on it.

I would think a bariatric doc would know how to calculate it based on your info. The Body Bug and devices like it tell you how many calories you burn each day rather than an average of what you probably burn every day.I know some people love these devices and the calculations but if you are loosing weight you are burning more than you are putting in, if you are staying the same they are equal, and if you are gaining then intake is greater than expenditure..right?

Ok this cant be right it says I burn 2455.41 a day? So for the OP 1550 is very low. maybe they did some other kind of test?? There is no way by doing nothing I burn so many calories. If so I would lose more weight.

I know some people might not agree with this and at first I was the same way but I do believe if you eat to low of calories for so long it will damage your metabolism in the long run.

I did Richard Simmons for a long time was very successful at . I was eating 2000 calories a day and losing 1-3 pounds per week. Every 50 pounds I would lose he would drop me 50 calories and I would start losing again . That with exercise 3-4 days a week .

Now I am eating 1000 to 1300 calories a day and cant lose a single pound. I was eating more and losing more , now I am eating less and not losing .

I have talked to several people and for my weight and my exercise I do they say I am not eating enough so I am upping my calories each week by a 100 to when I start losing again and go from there.

Your food should never get stuck if it does that means you are to tight and need some taken out. That might be a good reason right there why you are not losing .

Getting stuck has never been an indication of restriction for me. Heck I was able to get stuck when my band was completely empty. Getting stuck for me means I ate the wrong food, took too big of a bite, ate too fast, didn't chew well, ate too much or was too stressed or not relaxed. (stress during a meal makes eating a baby spoon full of applesauce impossible for me!) When deciding if I need a fill my doctor only uses two indicators: 1.) Are you losing or gaining weight? 2) Are you hungry between meals.

I would say first to increase your activity level a little at a time. Increasing exercise helps boost your metabolism. Review what and how you are eating (sit at the table in a relaxed environment without distraction and stress, eat small bites, chew well, pause between bites, avoid tough, fibrous, doughy foods and do not drink with your meal). And once you get exercise and eating down, get going on a few small fills until you see some weight coming off.

While it may be true if you are burning more calories than you are taking in, you can have to much of a deficit. I'm on my feet all day at work and work out 6 days a week, burning 500-800 calories per workout. I was eating 1200 calories per day for my first 8 months. I was losing weight, not crazy fast like some, but I was losing. I then hit a wall and I could not lose anymore. I got a body media fit and realized my deficit was sometimes over 2000 calories. A deficit of 1000 is the highest that is recommended for healthy weight loss.

I started upping my calories, and started losing again, I then hit another wall after 2 weeks or losing. I decided to try as Myfitness pal recommends and eat back my exercise calories. After weeks of a slight gain and then maintaining my last lowest weight. Well 7 weeks of this I started losing again and I'm now losing better than ever. First week I lost 1.4 lb this past week I lost 2.8 lb. Things re looking good for another good loss this week. So all in all, low calories does not work for all, and yeah, I eat anywhere from 1500-1900 calories per day. I feel great, by the way, I have basically no restriction, so I can do this.

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
