Just Beginning

I'm just beginning this program, evaluation is on the 10th and operation should be two weeks after. After five years of wondering, I,m finally going to do it.

Weight is easy for me to take off, but keeping it off seems impossible. Like many here, I'm trying to get rid of Diabetes, sleep Apnia and a bunch of fat

guy problems. At 74, I need more ambition and energy and the DRs. seem to think this will help so here I go!

I'm right there with ya, almost... 52, screwed around with surgery decision for 2 years; saw the doc, put it off, etc... and yea, I could lose weight and then find it again in no time flat! oh and in the 2 years I stalled the surgery I managed to get put on diabetes meds.. yea I really took carre of myself, huh?

So, now I'm banded. had surgery July1. Started 2 week preo-op diet June 15, and have already lost over 40 pounds. I haven't lost 40 pounds in God knows how long... already feel MUCH better.. glad I did it.. you will be too!

To top it off, I'm a Beer maker and a bread baker and to give them up will take a Hercluean effort. That's been my life until now.

It's going to be a major hurdle, but if you can do it , so can I.

congrats..... you'll do great!

I was banded in Oct 08 and I am here to tell you, if you let the band do its job, it really works. I was 328 at my highest and have been consistantly 225 for the past 2 years. Do I need to lose more? Sure, who doesn't, but I am lighter than I was at age 14 and I am 40 now..... and to be at the same weight for 2 years is amazing. So good luck, it will be the best decision of your life!

Great that you are taking action, its never too late to do it. I am 63 as of tomorrow and wish I had done this sooner. The doctor will probably advise you that due to our age (over 60) you can reasonably expect 2-3 pounds a month in weight loss. Younger folks do that per week when that start the program and taper out as they get closer to thier goals. 40 pounds makes a real difference in how you feel and your general health and you will notice it. Best wishes and Good luck and lets hope that you have a faster than average metabolism so you can reach your goal as soon as you possible. Let us know how you do.

A close friend of mine, an attorney, rather sedentary, had the Lapband procedure done about 5 months ago and has lost over 60lbs. He's just a couple years younger than me, and

that is really what gave me the push to start this project.

I was told, a number of years ago that there was no point in anyone over 65 trying the Lapband, but apparently that thinking has changed.

beer make and bread baker... by profession or passion? for me, it's a passion on both. I am by no means a pro beer maker, but I do have fun doing it. And bread, well... I like crusty breads like the rye I grew up with in NJ that I can't find here in western VA, so I make my own.

Beer... for now, it's strictly off limits. I was taking in way too much and I am MUCH better off without it. Will I stay off it? I don't know. but right now, going on two months, my body is thanking me for leaving it alone. blood pressure down, etc...

how's that?

I've been making beer since 1985. Probably 400 5gal batches. Since making this Lapband decision, DW has been eyeing my brewery for a sewing room. I guess thats the way it goes.

SWMBO and I spent 10 years in Europe and learned to love European bread. Plain German Sourdough rye is beyond me. I've tried with commercial and homemade starter, but It's never

quite right.I even bought german rye flour, but no luck.

There are a lot of things that are going to have to change in the next few months and I guess I'll just have to get used to it because if I'm going through all this crap, there's just no way

Maybe a dumb question, I know nothing about beer making. I was never a big beer drinker myself, but, on occasion, I'd have one. I've seen some suggest using salt, never tried that before, not sure how it would work. Would using a fruit help? Like orange or lime? Or I guess there's the option of leaving it sit out, but is that realistic? Anyhow, since I seen some of you mention you made beer, thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance :) Alan

To all you beer making guys, I was wondering, what do you think of the idea of somehow making beer that doesn't have carbonation. Is it even possible? Alan, If you've ever tried to drink an old beer (Like from last night's party), you'll know why beer has to have carbonation. Carbon dioxide gives beer it's distinctive taste. Without it it's pretty awful. We work hard to get enough CO2 in beer. If you want to drink alcohol, they make very good wines these days;^). I'm selling all my beer stuff and DW thinks she's going to move her sewing stuff in my brewery. I'm in ham radio and I think it might become a radio room. Today we bought some Quinoa and sugarless stuff. I'm getting ready for my year in hell. I can lose weight readily, keeping it off is the problem. If you guys ever really want to learn beermaking, let me know. I have all the information you can use.

      April Surgery
      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
