What to expect at psych visit

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I have my psych visit next week. I know that each is psychologist might be different, but can someone give me a idea of how the psych visit is. I read in someone summary from a post that they failed first psych test, but passed second.........There's a test?? And how is it possible to fail? Thank you.

Hi! My psych visit was a breeze. He just took my history, asked me why I wanted to have the surgery and what my expectations were, and I passed. There was no written test! Good luck! When is your surgery? I haven't had mine yet--hoping for the end of August or sometime in September. Take care. And, keep me posted on your journey!:)

Hey Peps,

Thanks for the info. My surgery is not scheduled yet. I have my nutrition class friday and psych visit next week, after which my doctor's office will submit for authorization. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a Aug. surgery date.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! I enjoyed talking with my dietitian. Like I said, my psych eval was a breeze. I kow you'll do fine.

I have been jumping through hoops for my ins. for a whole year. That year will be up Aug. 16th, and I see my surgeon on the 17th. Hopefully, at that time it won't take more than a week or two for ins. to approve it. I've had so many emotions going through everything, but I know it will all be worth it and that God has put me through all of this for a reason. My day is coming....I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck to you! Please keep me posted on your progress. It's nice to have someone to talk to who is going through the sme things.

Take care. Peps

I didn't take a psych test. We talked about my mental history, how I'm feeling/doing now, if I'm on any meds, what my family's history of mental illness might be... it's a little personal of course! But not bad.

Mine was also a breeze. Like the above answers, she asked me why I wanted the band, my medical background, if I've ever attempted suicide, about family support and did I have hobbies. Just be truthful and confident and you should do fine :)

I just went for mine this morning. It was easy peasy. I had to take a 165 question test and return it before my appointment. It was called the MBMD or something. I looked it up on the internet and it helps your dr. know if you're going to be compliant after your surgery, what kind of patient you are (complain excessively, etc) and whether or not you're likely to sue them! It also asks questions that help identify if you're suicidal and stuff too. I was with the psych maybe 35-40 minutes. He reviewed medical history, family history etc. He made sure I understood how the LapBand worked and my expectations and that was about it. Good luck.

I was sent several papers in the mail, all questionnaires, I was asked to bring them to appointment ( I think one had like 300+ questions). He took the papers when I arrived, then we talked. He wanted to know what I knew about the lap band, what I expected, why i wanted, and when did I get to the point did I decided I want to do proceed. Then we talked about being successful and the people who aren't and why, then he told me about support groups and I was on my merry way. There was my visit in a nutshell. Good Luck!

My experience was different both times when I did it. My first attempt at this was about 5 years ago. I was younger and wanting the surgery just for impulse reasons. Anyway, I failed the first time because I had childhood "crisis" that I was honest about and never got professional help for. The doctor reuested that I see him a couple more times before I have the surgery. I didn't want help especially at $200/45min. So I never went back.

This time my insurance covered the evaluation with a different doctor. I told him what I wanted him to know because I didnt want to be held back again. I passed!

I didn't have to take any questionaire. I don't recommend fabricating like I did. My past is no longer a burden on me and I didn't want it holding me back again.

I had a friend who had to take a 200 question personality type test.

My experience was my psych (I did not care for) started digging into my past. I was in tears several times. End result was that she "from her professional experience" <_< discovered that people make a life changing choice such as this after a big event in their life. She associated mine with my parents divorce. I am 23, married, have my own life and am GLAD my parents separated. She was totally off by this but it's what she needed to hear to allow me to pass so whatever floats her boat!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
