Does your band feel tighter 1-2 weeks after a fill?

Recommended Posts

I think my band feels tighter around 10-14 days after a fill. Does anyone else experience this? If so, what do you attribute it to?

I read that it can take a couple of weeks after a fill to feel it. I sure hope so! That's why many doctors space out the fills 4-6 weeks.

I hope others reply because I'd really be interested in their experiences!

I didn't feel the last couple of fills until about 2 weeks out, also. I, too, have heard this is common.

Does anyone know the science behind this phenomenon?

I went in for a small, .25cc, deflate today. I asked the Nurse Practitioner why fills can feel tighter a couple weeks later. She said it can be due to stress but if you'renot going through a stressful time that it is due to a "delayed inflammatory response."

Delayed fills are completely normal. They happen for several reasons:

  • when the Fluid is put in it pushes fluid from the tubing into the band, and it takes a bit of time for that to distribute equally around the band
  • when fluid is put it it applies pressure to the stomach - even if it's just a tiny fill - and that causes a slight inflammatory reaction that builds as the body reacts
  • placebo effect - you expect to feel a fill, you don't feel it immediately, you subconsciously eat a little less to see if it helps, it doesn't so you go back to eating normal but oops the fill really did take so you feel tighter a week or more later

The last sounds ridiculous but it happens. Your body will react to how you feel. Just know that each fill does impact you - even if only a tiny bit - and when you're talking about a hole the size of a dime, that tiny bit can be a lot.

I have noticed this too. The next day after a fill it is the same as before, but after a week or so, I began to notice the change. I have no clue why this happens!!

I was wondering the same thing too so I decided to search the topic. My fills seem to kick in after about 1-2 weeks after. I think that why my doc schedules them out 2-4 weeks.

I had my 2nd fill on 6/27...and honestly, just think I started feeling it this week (7/11) so that is about two weeks. It was the first time that I noticed I started "sighing" after 1/2 a lean cuisine pizza. .... when normally I could have eaten one with no problem and before surgery it would have taken two to stop the hunger. So I think after reading this...yeah, 2 weeks seems like a common thing? strange.

I was told that there is a fat pad around the stomach and Fluid shifts in the body. If you loose weight the fat pad does to??? Guess it makes sense. I am much much tighter right after a fill!!! I freak out that maybe I am over filled then it gets better. I also have bubbles crawling up my throat after a fill!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
