How often do you slime?

Recommended Posts

It's usually because I eat to rapidly... but I've been sliming pretty regularly.

I'm actually only on my second week, but my surgeon told me to use my best judgment on food. Soft foods or purees are desirable, but I can tolerate grilled meats, fish, eggs, etc., I'm ok to eat them.

I was chomping down on some eggs today and knew I was starting to slime. It's a 'blocked' feeling that i think i can push down with Water, but that's a mistake. If I try to swallow the slime, it does not work. I usually need to go to the bathroom and spit it out. The whole episode lasts less than a minute or two.

However, I really need to start eating slowly b/c this is about the 5th or 6th time I've done it...and I've only been eating solids for a week now. Hmmm....

What about youse guys?

Just a note, eggs are a notorious item for getting stuck.

And you are so right, drinking Water while stuck is a VERY bad idea, unless you are near a toilet or sink, because it starts the launch sequence.

For me now, I get stuck maybe once every couple of months. Then I tend to go in streaks. Once I get stuck once, I'll get stuck a few times in a row. If it was a really bad episode I'll do fluids and mushies only for the rest of the day and the next.

The food that is the worst offender for me is white meat chicken. Doughnuts are the first runner-up. So I avoid both of those.

When I was first banded I formed a habit of pausing before I took the first bite to remind myself that I am banded and need to chew, chew, chew. I still do it today, and it serves me well to remember not to take that first huge bite that is likely to get stuck. It also reminds me to eat slowly and wait between bites. Once you feel that tiny bit of pain like you are getting stuck, STOP eating. Wait for the pain to stop before you continue. If you add food on top of what feels like a potential stuck episode, it goes nowhere good. If you wait for the pain to subside, you can continue on. I've had times where I've gotten stuck on the first bite. That's the end of the meal. Over, done, kaput.

It really is a learning experience. Take your time while you get to know your band. Mine is named Bandit because he has stolen many a meal from me! rolleyes.gif

Denise, thank you for what you wrote. I had a terrible evening, thanks to a first bite that was probably too big, and because I was really hungry, I kept eating. After just a few bites, I felt the familiar pain, and then ten minutes later, I was in agony. For two hours. I vomited 5 times. I just had my second fill four days ago, and since then, everything has been uncomfortable to swallow. I am thinking about calling my doctor to ask for a little "unfill" tomorrow. After being so miserable all evening, I can't believe I'm even debating the issue, but I don't want to go back to my situation after the first fill, where I felt no restriction. Anyway, your helpful hints were excellent, and I thank you.

I've never slimed in 9 months.

If you're having several days in a row of getting stuck, you've probably irritated your stomach and are swollen. I'd back off the solids and go to liquids/mushies for a few days to let things settle down, then add solids back in again.

I've been banded for 9 months, I've only slimed once and that was my own fault. Now getting stuck, that happens quite more often.

You are very welcome. A slight unfill might be in order. You don't have to have all of the fill you had put in removed. I did that once. When I could not even get yogurt down, I knew I needed the unfill.

I am blaming Wheelchair for my woes last night. Due to asking this question I was jinxed! laugh.gif I got stuck on a turkey burger. One of the worst episodes I've had in a while. One of these days I will learn that I really ought not to attempt eat the bun. AT ALL. Sometimes I can tolerate a few bites of it if I tear away the bottom and use it as a handle. Other times, no go. And usually my bites are just too big for my own good. It's something about holding the burger, I just tend to shove too much in. 3 years, and I am still learning.

The ground turkey was a new food for me, as hamburger and veggie burgers just don't tend to work for me. The turkey was fine, but something else not so fine. I also didn't stop soon enough. (sigh) Sometimes we don't take our own advice.

I am on shakes and liquids today. But still, I wouldn't trade my band to be back near my high weight and on BP meds and nearing diabetes.

Denise - I just got back from getting a slight unfill. That was such a miserable experience last night. I'm sorry you were going through it, too! It's interesting that you got stuck on turkey burger. That's something that doesn't give me a problem. chicken does (white meat). I haven't tried dark meat chicken yet. I am on liquids and soft foods for a few days. The liquids I hate; the soft foods I don't mind at all. I have to be very careful with bread, too. Like you said, I'm not sure it's the bread, or whether we take bites that are way too big when the sandwich itself is big!

Anyway, just wanted to tell you that I did get some Fluid taken out. Hopefully we're onward and upward now. Congratulations on your success. You are an inspiration!

I hope you are feeling better with the unfill. I don't believe it was the turkey, but cannot say for sure, as it was a first for me to eat ground turkey. Based on how easy it was to chew and my past history with "hamburgers on Buns, " I don't think it was the meat.

After I had my unfill I was able to go back in a month later and get refilled with what was removed and a little more. Bands are our fickle friends!

I slimed again today.

My mother made some great panini sandwich... I knew I should take it easy if tough bread at 3 weeks after.... but it looked so good. After a couple bites...I drank some Water and slimed....

But I cut down a tree over the weekend.... a pretty big tree (don't know the name). I rented a Chipper and got rid of all the branches. Good work for me.

Not so easy in a wheelchair....but I manage. rolleyes.gif

I wonder if it is the fact that it is a sandwich that might cause you problems. This is something that I have learned about myself this past week, as has another person who posted here. Our first impulse when we get a sandwich in our hands is to take that first big, delicious bite. It is almost impossible to take a small bite of a sandwich.

I'm not so sure it's the bread that causes the problem, or if it is the size of the bite. I did an experiment last week. I took a piece of bread at a restaurant, put a tiny bit of butter on it, and cut it into tiny pieces. Then I ate the pieces with a fork and chewed and chewed and chewed. Guess what? No problem at all. And that was soft bread.

So, after my horrible experience last week (I got something stuck, with vomiting and sliming afterwards), I have been SOOOOO careful to peel the skin off of sausage and cut food into tiny bites and not overeat. I haven't eaten chicken for a while, nor scrambled eggs. Those two things have caused major problems for me.

Please see if you stop sliming if you don't eat your food in sandwich form, and cut the food into small bites. At the first feeling of "stuck," STOP! DON"T DRINK ANYTHING!

Overall, eat slowly, like you never have before. I am by no means an expert (not even close), but I am starting to discover what works best for me. Maybe it will work for you, too.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
