I'm just not losing weight

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 1/2 weeks post-op and my weight is not going down quickly at all. I'm getting discouraged when I compare myself to others that are the same amount post-op as me. Everyone else seems to have lost 20+ lbs.

I'm eating 600 - 650 calories a day. I get full very quickly. I eat 40-60g Protein. I'm walking daily and my calorie deficit is 2100, but the pounds are just not coming off. So I started tracking not only my calories, but also my fat and carbs. It appears that I'm getting somewhere between 40 - 90 g of carbs a day.... which make up the most of my average daily calorie intake by fat, carbohydrate, and protein.

So today I decided to start low carb and so far my protein makes up 52%, fat 34 % and carbs 14% of my avg daily calorie intake. I'm hoping this makes the difference and the pounds start coming off.

I'll take any suggestions, advice or confirmation that you can give me!

Thanks,

Gingy

If that doesn't work, you might try decreasing your Protein and increasing your fat. I lost quite a bit of weight doing Atkins which is moderate Protein (30%) and high fat (60%). I kept my carbs around 30-45 and they only came from green vegies.

Whatever you do, stick with it for a month and keep track in something like fitday.com and that still doesn't work, then you can tweak it.

However, you said you were only 3-1/2 weeks postop so I wouldn't worry about not losing weight at this point. You're still healing...and the best thing you can do is stop comparing yourself to other people. :)

Thank you. Started using FitDay last week just to see how many cals i'm taking in. It's hard not to compare... and hard not to get discouraged. But you are right... cause I know everyone is different. I'm just soooo ready to see some more positive results instead of being stuck in a rut. I've never been good at the whole patience thing :)

Thank you!

I am four weeks post op and have lost about 18lbs so far. I am happy. It is so much more than I would have lost on my own. Just my opinion, but I have been taking it easy on myself. I didn't put the weight on overnight and we aren't going to take it off overnight. You have lost 16 lbs in 3 1/2 weeks which is awesome! Hang in there, the pounds will come off.

Rachael,

You are absolutely right. And you quoted my husband to a tee. He said the same thing about I didn't put the weight on overnight. 16 lbs is something to get excited over and I have called each pound "forever" pounds... a pound I will keep off "forever". So i guess the slow weight loss will help me better with the forever... help me to learn to eat right over a long period a time so I have a better chance of being successful.

Thank you! And you are doing great too!

Hey Gingy! It would be best to consult a registered dietician, but in my experience you're not eating enough protein, nor are you eating enough calories. Your body is a machine and it needs gas to run! Even though we have a band around our bellies we need to make sure we have enough fuel to get us through the day. I'm also going to the low carb route, with my daily intake between 50-75g (more on days i have resistance training). I keep my fat low (under 30g) and my protein at least 100g. When trying to burn fat, your protein intake should be 10% of your calories. I eat 1000-1200 calories per day=100-120 grams of protein.

When you can begin exercising it will help tremendously. When I was immediately post op until 4 weeks, my physician said 60-80g/protein per day.

Just like someone else said.. we didn't put this weight on overnight, and we can't blink it off! Don't get frustrated you can do it!

The weight loss does seem slower for some than others. It's been 90 days for me and I'm down 30lbs which is great BUT. I have to let you know most of the weight loss was the first 45 days then just a few pounds. I'm not going to get discouraged yet. I still have alot of things to learn about the band I have already experienced being to full and getting sick so I dont want to go there. I had my 90 day appointment on the 14th of April and according to my doctor I have lost more weight than the normal. The normal is 1 pound a week so 52 pounds a year WOW I was shocked about that and if you are severely overweight it could be 2 pounds. I was hoping on a few pounds a week and 10 per month but that isn't working for me. I just ordered a eliptical machine hoping that will make a difference. I think the key word is PATIENCE.. If January 11, 2012 doesn't find me down 60 pounds I'm going to be pissed.....

Good luck to all.

I kinda figured my calories were way too low... but I eat 6 times a day and I don't know how to add anymore calories in yet. Unless I eat something unhealthy... which I'm trying to stay away from. Guess I need to find higher calorie foods. Can anyone tell me some things that you eat?

I've been eating:

can chicken (white meat)

tuna

deli turkey

cottage cheese

string cheese sticks

grilled chicken breasts (like at restaurants)

edamame soy Beans

green Beans

broccoli

refried beans

Thanks for your help and replies!

Do you have any food restrictions? i'm 6 weeks post op and can eat anything, i have trouble with hamburger though. I eat:

salmon cups (in the same area as the tuna)

lots and lots of white fish (orange roughy, tilapia) and sometimes swordfish although only once a week

pork chops

chicken

greek yogurt

Protein shakes (normally for breakfast)

center cut lean bacon

weight watchers string cheese

and if I'm really feeling carbtastic i eat:

thomas bagel thin (only 100 calories!)

frozen yogurt

fat free pudding

a slice of pizza (totallllly my weakness haha)

I need to work on the veggie intake, i don't like them so much :-/

yes, i have a list of food i'm not supposed to eat yet. it's mainly stuff that crunches, plus Pasta, rice, bread and hard to chew meats. i can have pork, but i have not tried it yet. i love veggies and seem to eat a lot of those, but they don't pack much of a punch. i will do what you suggested and add more Protein to my daily intake and try and up my calories. i do feel sluggish... like my tank is empty. i'm also irritable a lot... so maybe filling up with the right things will help my energy, mood and promote weight loss?!?!?!?!

like right now it's 11:17pm at night and I'm starting to get hungry... probably b/c I didn't take in enough Protein throughout the day, eh?

thanks again!

You might try upping your fat intake. I know it goes against all the traditional rules of losing weight, but a 5 year study done by Harvard showed that people lost more (and improved their lipid profiles more) on a low carb, high fat (60%) diet compared to a low carb, low fat diet. Fat helps with the energy and satiety. Plus, adding just a little more fat will up your calories as well. I find when I inadvertently let my fats drop to around 30% I just don't have the mental energy to do anything.

Also, since you're posting this in the 'low carb bandsters' thread, I'm assuming you're doing low carb (below 60gm a day) in which case the refried Beans would not qualify. Beans are pretty high in carbs. You want to stick to green vegies - broccoli, green beans, salads, asparagus, etc.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
