Cruise vacations

Do we have any people here that have taken cruises since their surgery? It use to be that it was a struggle to not gain weight on a cruise, or to fight to get it off after the cruise. I've taken 5 cruises so far, 2 of them after my lapband, and I have the next cruise coming up in May. My wife had the bypass and this will also be her 3rd cruise since surgery.

We both reached our goal weights before cruising and are near those goal weights now. If you have cruised, you are aware of things like the Noro-virus and other illnesses. They give the cruise lines fits and lot of bad press. So there are steps the cruise lines take to fight these type of illnesses. One of those is you sign a form when you board that says you aren't sick and haven't been sick in 24 hours. The one on Royal Caribbean specifically asks if you have vomited in the last 24 hours.

On our last cruise, my wife ate something the morning of the cruise that gave her the dumping syndrome. She fought it for about 20 minutes, finally evacuated it and felt normal 5 minutes late. I knew what had happened to her and understood why. However, 2 hours later when we boarded the ship, I filled out the form, and lied. I knew she wasn't sick, so i didn't feel bad about lying. Had I honestly answered yes, one of a couple of things might have happened, which is why I am posting this to see if anyone else has been through this. Anyway, the best thing that would have happened if I was honest if they would have denied us boarding until they had a doctor come out and speak to us, hopefully they would understand we would have boarded normally. But I could easily see that delaying our boarding by as much as an hour or two. The next possibility is we would have waited then put in quarantine in our cabin for some length of time. The worst case if they would have just denied us boarding Knowing she was perfectly healthy I wasn't prepared to accept any of these possablities. So I lied.

On my first cruise after my band and being close to my goal weight I boarded the ship normally and honesty smile.gif and was at lunch in the buffet. I swallowed a piece of chicken that was too big and got stuck. I knew it had to come out, if you know what I mean. I was deathly afraid of being sick and quarantined. Our rooms were not yet available so I had to use a public rest room and I actually waited in it for 10 minutes for it to be empty.

Any one else had any issues with cruising? We soon leave for our our 30th anniversary and 7 days in the carribean. I'm looking forward to a week of great fun, eating and hopefully gaining no more than a pound or two.

My Wife and I are avid cruisers. Will be on Royal Carib this coming June for a 9 nighter. This will be our first cruise since I was banded 1/31 of this year. Should be interesting. I did go ahead and book some specialty rest. for 2 different nights. I don't mind not "Pigging out" A salad and appetizer will be fine if that's the way it is.

Fortunately the buffets on cruise ships lost their appeal to me a while back. And I already have a table for 2 reserved in the MDR so as not to be rude with other guests by getting up and leaving early each meal.

We'll see.

I recently got off a 10 NCL cruise and I had some issues with the food being to greasy.. I just found out that I need to have my gall bladder removed so that was most likely the issue. As as far as pigging out and portion sizes, they were very accommodating. I was with my husband and mom on the cruise and we after I was done with my portion of food I just hung out with them until they were done. I did have a few incidents on the cruise where I had gall bladder attacks and was vomiting, I was concerned that I would have an issue, but my neighbors didn't say anything and I had no issues. My next cruise is next April on Celebrity. a 12 day out of NJ. the difference is I won't have a gall bladder to hamper my fun!

I was banded on 11/15/10 and have lost 45 lbs with 35 left to go. We will be taking a 7 day cruise May 7 and I admit I am alittle nervous about the food. I have a signifigant about of restriction which always keeps me alert yet as my Dad used to say sometimes " my eyes are bigger than my stomach." I am hoping to replace that with the joy of being on a nice trip with my 92 year old Dad and my sister. We just lost Mother 2 months ago and decided we needed some good times together.

The Lap Band was the one good thing I had going for me when Mother was dying. It made me feel I atleast had control over some aspect of my life and the weight loss rather than weight gain kept me positive in a very trying time.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
