Surgery in two days 3/21/11 and so scared:(

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone else out there is getting banded on 3/21..which is only two days away. I have been an emotional roller coaster and am so scared of going under general anesthesia. The sad thing is I see people EVERY day get intubated and go under general anesthesia and they have ALL been fine. I'm just starting to fear that I will cry and freak out once I get to the surgery center. I want this more than anything and have been very compliant with my 7 day high Protein low carb diet (down 6.2 pounds). Just need to know if I am the only one out there who is scared and super emotional.

Hi Lovey, My name is Andrea and i'm also scheduled for Monday 3/21 and am very excited and ready to get this rolling. I've been on a two week liquid diet so needless to say i'm REALLY ready. lol As far as the anesthesia goes you will be just fine. Once you're in recovery you're going to laugh because it happens so fast. They'll probably give you something to relax you prior to that anyway but once you're in the operating room and settled on the table the anesthesiologist gives his instructions and before you know it you're back in recovery. I've had several surgeries and they usually tell you go ahead and count backwards from 10 and I can honestly say I never remember saying 10 LOL I have a bad history of being sick in recovery so I know now to tell them upfront and they add something into their meds and i've been fine ever since and wake up with no nausea or vomiting. If you're afraid of this since it's your first and especially since it's an abdominal surgery I've read on here that if you tell them your concerns they'll give you an anti-nausea patch just to make sure. I'm not sure what type/style of nurse you are but I think you need to take some of your own advise that you probably tell your patients all the time......it's all going to be fine and you are in good hands and don't worry. My surgery is set for 7:30 am so I have to be there at 5:30 am and I have to stay overnight but that's ok with me because I won't feel so rushed to get out of recovery and be on my way. Not sure if you're going home the same day or whether you have to stay but wanted to give you a little peace of mind about your worries and tell you good luck. Keep in touch and good luck Monday. 3-21-11 will be our new birthday LOL

I am prone to anxiety attacks and was sooooooo scared of the anesthesia... All I could think was, OMG what if I have an anxiety attack because I can feel the drugs!?!? (which happens when I have to take pain meds or allergy mess that make ms sleepy. I told the anesthesiologist my concern and he kind of just chuckled and promised me I wouldn't have time to have an anxiety attack. He was right. We were having a talk about my upcoming trip to Vegas and he asked me what hotel I was staying in and I said Luxor... And then i remember I said wow... I'm really sleepy. Period. That was it. I woke up in recovery an hour later high as a kite. Lol... You will be fine... :)

Believe it or not ! ! ! It will go by quick, and you all will be fine.

They'll give you something to take the edge off, and then,,,, you will be fine with everything.

:( I am getting banded on 3/28/11 and I am going thru the same roller coaster! I go from yes to no. I have to have hernia repair done too. I feel I will have to be off too long etc..

But I have got tremendous support from here.. I feel it is normal, my fear is I might not wake up!!! but, I am learning thru here that it will be just fine.

So Relax and take a deep breath and we are here to listen.

Thanks so much for all you reassuring words and experiences...it really does help. I am just going to ask for the maximum "happy juice" before surgery and pray for calmness to take over. To Andrea please let me know how things went tomorrow and I will update you all when I am home from surgery tomorrow:)

I'm also scheduled for 3/21 and was doing fine until I heard from a couple of friends who toldl me I was crazy for doing this and would still remain fat. Yikes so much for trying to be anxiety free!

You make this work for you ! 1-2lbs. a week is the norm. You might lose more in the beginning, and then taper off. Don't get upset, it's all normal. The key thing is see what you look like in one year ! Remember this is a slow go.

As far as getting spooked! Don't let them get into your head. If those are friends,,,, there not very nice....

Were all nervous. I can remember telling my husband "give me my cloths,,, I'm leaving."

He said it's nerves. It was. They will give you something to take the edge off.

Let us know how it went.

Good Health to you, Shirley.

I have had a few friends tell me the same thing and I just have to keep moving forward like yourself. You are doing the best thing for you and we will be looking and feeling so much better 3 mths, 6mths, and a year from now. Please let me know how your surgery goes as I will let you know mine. I am scheduled for 0800 and have to be at the surgery center at 0630 so less than 12 hours to go....yikes! Praying that things go smoothly for all 3/21 surgery patients.

I'm sorry Shirley, but I had to laugh when you said "give me my clothes I am leaving":) I can see myself in the EXACT same situation with my husband tomorrow. Thanks for your kind and encouraging words. It makes people going through this feel a little less crazy.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
