Hi Renee,

Hey, I was banded on the very same day as you were....guess what? I have only lost 25 lbs and struggle with hunger....but have tried my darndest to stay on 900 calories per day....up to a thousand if I am terribly hungry. I live near Tombstone, AZ and do a lot of singing there.....so it will be Fun to have a smaller wardrobe some day. My first and only fill, so far, was 5cc....but I am due back this next week. With the trauma of excess skin....and since I am self pay....guess it is fitting to not lose too fast...since I doubt that I could afford plastic surgery in the future. Have any ideas about the scar?? Mine looks gross, red and spreading out a tad....3 inches. Have you totally healed in that area yet??? Anyway, drop me a line in here. God bless, Cheri

Hi all,

HOW ARE ALL THE JANUARY 2011 Bandsters making out...?

My surgery was 1/18/11 and I lost 20 pounds between post op and week 1 pre op and haven't lost another pound :( - I've found this to be so extremely difficult considering I have ZERO restriction. I got my first fill on 3/1 and felt NOTHING so I called the doc yesterday and told him that I'm hungrier than ever, I've gained just a few pounds and I could eat whatever I want without restriction and as much of it as I want - and he got me right in - I realize that this is not something the practice would do - it's a fill every 6 weeks no matter what, no excuses, but maybe they saw how little they really DID put in last week so I went in today and had another fill and I'll have my third fill on 4/13. I'm PRAYING to god that I feel a little restriction now. Cause I really don't know what that feels like at all. I'm very anxious to see results - Results make me want to work harder and exercise but thus far - I have been sluggish and bummed about it. I know that I'll be where I need to be one day but I was hoping for just a LITTLE MORE out of this band - if I had the willpower and motivation I would have lost it on my own and I would have KEPT the weight off in the past -

HOW ARE ALL OF YOU MAKING OUT? I'd love to hear all your stories - please share. The good, the bad, the ugly --- let's see how the January 2011 Bandsters are making out.

Renee

Hi All, I was banded Jan. 28th 2011. I have lost 40 pounds, (15 pounds pre- op diet.)

I got my first fill March 3rd, I have no restriction whatsoever, and I think i have gained 3 to 4 pounds!

I have been cheating a little, eating crap and liquids with my meals. I think the lap band really does work

but I have to follow the directions for living with a lap band for it to work properly.

good luck to everybody.

Lori

Renee,

How are you doing? I gained almost 3 lbs before my fill last Monday! (Now up to 5 cc.) I KNOW how important it is to write down everything in my food journal, but I find myself running around without it. Ugh!

I'm not doing too good -- what the hell is WRONG with me? I gained 5 pounds

I'm down a total of 16 pounds since January 18th and that INCLUDES pre op --- so how sad is that!?!?!??!

I had a Protein shake this morning. I'm starting to get very hungry - I may have some cream of wheat -

Tonight I'd like to do a fajita in a low carb tortilla or a salad. and Exercise is something that I have not been good at doing.

It's all my fault but WHY am I sabotaging it with bad food choices and sometimes cocktails.....?

Sorry I'm a downer today

Just wish I had a lot more restriction

That's what was going on with me- put on weight and hungry! This last fill helped a lot, so I'm hoping to lose this week (or at least lose what I had gained.)

Renee, I'm sorry to hear you are having such a hard time :(

Just looking at what you said you ate, are you getting enough calories? Can you try foods that are bulkier? liquids like shakes will go right through your pouch and you will be hungry...try to eat something more substantial that will stay in the pouch to help you feel full longer. Just an idea for you... I know you can turn it around, you can do it!

This post is making me feel SO much better; I'm also a January bandster and I have only lost about 24lbs, which is really disappointing to me. I've only had one fill and it seems to have done little to nothing as far as I'm concerned. I have no problem eating ANYTHING, so it's been mostly willpower keeping me from gaining. This whole 1/2c of food every 4 hours is DEFINITELY not happening for me. I'm trying to hold off on getting another fill because I haven't been doing everything in my power to try to lose weight on my own. Trying to step up the exercise and get in more Protein, and then if I'm still stalled then I guess I'll go back. *sigh* Thanks for this post, Renee; I don't feel like such a loser anymore.

Hi Everyone,

I was banded on Jan 12th, had no pre-op diet. I had lost a total of 13#, and then last week gained 1.6 back! I've had one fill, on Feb 28th. I get stuck almost every meal after the first few bites, and I'm not sure if its because I'm eating too fast or not chewing enough, or both. The pain is excruciating while I'm stuck and sometimes I have to bring a little of it back up in order to cope with it. After the episode passes though, I can continue to eat without a problem. I can't say that I ever feel stuffed, like I've eaten too much. I just quit eating because I know I don't need anymore food and I'm satisfied. I have tried to keep my calories at 1000 to 1100/day and get in at least 60gm of Protein every day. I'm only 5' 1" and my BMI was 32 when I started this. No one has noticed or at least commented on my little wt. loss, so it's no obvious to others. I am horribly discouraged that after 10 weeks I've had no more success than this. I'm open for any suggestions. Since I'm getting stuck, I don't think another fill is the answer, but I'm not sure.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
