Hello All! I have been banded since 2-9 and today is the 12th.. I have been on mostly Clear Liquids with a few bites of sf pudding last night. now that the gas and swelling is almost gone I am starting to feel the hunger pings. I have been having a few ounces of beef or chicken broth twice a day, crystal light with Protein, Water, sf ice pops, but i am still very hungry. i saw on a few blogs that we can have shakes...milkshakes and Protein Shakes. how do i make them and what do i put in it? i have 1%milk at home...do i use frozen fruit? can i have a thinned regular milkshake for added calories? i have been soooo tired i know i am not getting enough calories! please help...my doctor and nutritionist was very vague with diet plans!

i make Protein Shakes with 1 chobani fat free plain greek yogurt, a handful of frozen strawberries, a lil frozen raspberries and a little more than 1/2 a banana. then just add Water, and a 0 calorie sweetner if you want (i do).. and blend.. you can thin it out by adding more or less water but the seeds may be a little hard.. if it is, try it without the raspberries. in terms of ready Protein shakes i like muscle milk light and pure protein the best.. i get both at target.. and you can thin them out with skim milk.. i add peanutbutter and a banana to chocolate protein shakes.. thats yummie too

I had mine on 2-9 also. Did you get a schedule to follow from your doctor?

I got a schedule..... First 2 days after all I could have was clear liquids. Days 3-10 I am on full liquids which includes things like yogurt, thinned cream of wheat, smooth vegetable Soups, etc. I can not have fruit even added to my shakes for a few weeks. I have muscle milk light but can't drink too much at a time, it fills me quickly.

i have a follow up on the 18th (fri) the original follow up date i was given was the 22nd...i don't think i could have lasted that long. also i have to go back to work ASAP (they were NOT happy that i had this done and took off of work). my doctor never gave me a eating calendar...my nutritionist gave me a rough paper with a two day clear liquid (plus one day for pre-op) and two weeks of full liquids. my list for full liquids are

1%milk,skim or lactaid 1%milk,plain soy milk, yogurt either plain nonfat or light reduced sugar(no fruit), plain nonfat greek yogurt, sugar free pudding-custard-or Jello, no sugar added carnation instant Breakfast, cream of wheat thinnned, cream or rice thinned, thin oatmeal, strained cream or clear soups but no pieces allowed or any sort, sugarfree Protein powder or supplement look for 15-20p pro <20g total carb <5g fat per 8 oz

that is for two weeks...i caved and had thinned mashed potatoes last night. i feel guilty and i hope i did not mess anything up. i just cant seem to get around the mental part of not having solid food in my mouth, i wish i had live in support...but this is my choice and my responsibility..

That is pretty much the list I have for full liquids. I'm on that for 10 days which ends this Saturday. I've been eating yogurt (smooth but flavored), Tomato Soup, sugar free apple sauce, thinned cream of wheat and shakes when I can get them down (I bought the ready made muscle milk light in Walmart when I didn't like the powder). Can't add any fruit till next week. . Thats pretty much it.

The reason you shouldn't have real food is because your stomach is sewn to the band. If the stomach needs to work and break down the food, it can rip the stitches. So try and stick with that list. I am staying away from broth because it isn't filling. I rather have a cup of Tomato Soup which is thicker and fills me more. Try and stick with thicker liquids, thats whats been helping me,

I go back to my doctor tomorrow.

Hi, I was banded on 2/9/11 also and am starting to feel hunger pains and upset stomach. I do like the Atkins Advantage shakes, you can get them at Walmart, etc.

I am starting full liquids tomorrow and can't wait to have some creamed Soup. This must be the hardest part but we will all get through it.

My question is if you can shew Tums if you have a gurgling stomach? Also, the rumbling in the belly is so loud that people at work hear it and wonder what is going on, LOL.

Oh God ! I have the SAME annoying loud rumbling! It is obnoxious! I have been living off of pureed bean with bacon soup made with 1% milk instead of Water. I add some Fiber one powder to it. It only takes about 7 teaspoons if not less to fill me up and it is soo tasty! Also lots of water! But not right before or after i eat. I don't know about Tums...I would call the dr and check on that one to make sure since it is a chalky texture..

You are absolutely in the most difficult stage right now. It will get better, I promise. The first couple of weeks are for healing and for the swelling to go down. I am 7 weeks post-op and have been able to eat anything I want, just not much of it and be sure to chew, chew, chew when you do start on regular food. I make a Protein smoothie every morning for my Breakfast. It takes me a couple of hours to drink the whole thing tho. I use the Wheybolic 60 Extreme from GNC and I use one scoop, ff milk, some Greek yogurt, 1/2 banana, strawberries, (fresh or frozen) ( or other fruit that I have such as peaches, blueberries, mango, etc.). I love them and try to make them a little different each day. I use the vanilla or chocolate Protein Powder and have just tried Silk Almond milk and it is REALLY good in them.

Good luck to you.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
