Getting sick alot. Anyone else have this problem?

Recommended Posts

I have noticed since it has gotten colder here that I have been sick three times. I got sick in late October just sinus and stuffy nose. I got sick right after Thanksgiving with a sinus infection that lasted three weeks. I finally went to my regular doctor on Dec. 8, and she gave me an antibiotic. I was great until this morning. My nose is burning, and I feel like a sore throat is coming on.

I have never been sick more than twice during the winter months so I am curious if it has something to do with the lapband surgery? It may be a stupid question, but I just cannot figure out why I am getting sick all of a sudden every few weeks. I guess it is just a coincidence or something, but I thought I would ask. Thanks!

I don't think it is related -- I have been healthy, no issues. Did you get your flu shot this year? Take care and drink lots of liquids -- :)

No. I don't recall ever getting a flu shot except maybe when I was a kid. I guess that is something I should do. LOL.

I had the flu shot and three days later was very sick. I had to take two days off from work. I had bronchitis. Then 3 weeks later I was sick again with a sinus infection. I have been trying to figure out why I got sick twice so close together.

That sounds like me. I don't know if it has anything to do with the surgery because I will be a year out on Feb. 8 so I guess it's just a coincidence for me.

YES YES YES!!!!!!! I've been sick more then I have ever been in my entire life! I just got over a REALLY bad flu and I've caught everything under the sun since October. I'm glad it's not just me :).

But I wouldn't change it for anything. :D

Hehe. Me neither. I can handle a little sinus issue if I am losing weight. :)

I just thought it was weird, but I'm glad I'm not alone.

No, you are not alone! I am sick for the 2nd time in less than a month! I rarely get colds! But, since my surgery in February I have been sick more than ever! I think it may have something to do with getting in less Vitamins than I would if I was eating like I use to. I will admit I don't take my vitamins like I am supposed to.

I do take a Flintstone (Target brand actually) every night like the bottle says, but I guess it does have something to do with our nutrients. I stopped taking my chewable Calcium because it tastes like chalk, but I guess I need to start back to see if that helps. Thank you for response.

I think it's just because your immune system took a hit from having trauma to your body in general during surgery.

  1. It's very interesting about the incidence of some of us banders getting sicker than normal. It isn't like your digestion has really changed, and you are taking Vitamins regularly. I think one's body can react by becoming ill after a stressful event like surgery. I would consider the flu vaccine. We are also not as young as we once were. As far as sinus infections, have you ever heard of a neti-pot? I highly recommend one.

Now, you would have to remind us we are getting old! LOL! I never thought about the trauma to our body though....

Ha-Ha getting older sucks!

As far as you people who are not taking their Vitamins and calcium! SHAME ON YOU! Your body will kick your own asses big time if it does not get the right nutrients. Calcium will be robbed from your bones, which can make them brittle and lead to osteoporosis, you know that saying "oh she took a fall" well it isn't the fact that you fall it is the fact that your bones are brittle, see if you don't take your calcium, your body steals it from your bones! Of course you wont know it till you take your fall, and a simple fall breaks your Ass!

So peeps please take your vitamins, and age appropriate! No dumb ass kids vitamins, unless your a kid of course......O.K. thats all, hope I didn't offend anyone,,,but on another thread they say "tough love"!

I have read that toxins get stored in fat cells and when you start burning off those cells the toxins get released into the body and that is what can cause illness...I dont know if it is true it sounds right on because every time I lose weight I get sick so there you go that could be the reason why we are getting sicker more often cuz we are losing weight.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
