help! I'm sick of being sick....

Recommended Posts

Sorry to gross everyone out, but I need to ask about this. I vomit a lot...this can't be normal. It's mostly just that "slime" stuff, but sometimes food too. I'll admit that usually I bring it on by putting my finger down my throat because I'm in so much pain that I need relief. This happens at LEAST at one meal a day, if not two. Usually lunch and dinner. I know I'm eating too fast and/or too much, but I just can't seem to get this right. I've lost about 30 pounds now, my surgery date was 10/31/05. I'm happy with the weight loss, but I really don't like feeling this way all the time. Can anyone help???

I am sorry that you have to go through this. Have you asked your doctor if your band is too tight? That's what is sounds like to me. Or you are not chewing good enough. I hope you feel better soon.

I'm with them...sounds like your band is too tight.

I know the feeling of being so miserable you make yourself vomit. But BE CAREFUL. I had a slip last year and it's probably from vomiting. The trick is to avoid getting to that place of misery that the only relief is making yourself sick...

If you haven't had a fill yet, you really need to slow down and do the head work required to eat properly. Be good to your band!! Vomitng is NOT okay. Also, after a vomit, or a PB where the food comes up or you use your finger, you really should go on liquids for 24 hours. At the very least for the next meal and very soft foods for the remainder.

If you have had a fill, have an unfill ASAP. You are too tight and need some time to make the eating adjustments. You should NOT be eating in a way that makes it necessary to use your finger to get the stuck food up. If you do, go liquids, then soft foods and let your stoma rest.

I have the same problem as you tina. But I think we have to eat slowly and bites smaller pieces. What do you eat? I eat fish all the time, but still i'm vomit.

The one thing that helped me the most learn the proper pace was to GET UP between bites and literally walk away from the table. You have to let each bite get as far down as it will before taking another one. For people like me who are used to bolting food this is a nearly impossible thing to learn, but CRUCIAL.

You have to really comprehend how small your pouch is, and how slowly food moves through it. Take tiny bites, put your fork down, take ten slow, deep breaths before taking the next small bite.

You'll discover that you get full really fast that way, and then your meal is over. And when it's over, it's OVER. One more bite will make you vomit, and that is NOT good for your stomach, band, esophagus or state of mind. It's a learning curve, no doubt, but do whatever is necessary to pace yourself correctly and it will come together.

Good luck!!

Unfortunately if you know you are eating too fast, then all there is to do is slow down. Alexandra has a really good idea. I know that most of the time that I PB it's because I eat too fast, or eat too big of a bite.

Find a way to slow down, whatever it is. If you can't find a way to slow down, then go get a little unfill so that you aren't PBing so often. :)

I need an update, are you doing any better? I hope so, I was told to put down my fork after each bite. I was also told, no TV, no distractions while eating, as you tend to enjoy the eating experience better. I hope you are doing better, I really do. I think I may be in your shoes in 2 weeks when I get my first fill. Take care.

This is really not good Tina but I know how you feel...although for me it is less often. There is either something not right with your band or you are eating too much (sorry). Or maybe of the wrong things. Protein is always going to be really difficult to eat especially teamed with salads or veges so I tend to split these into separate meals mostly. And actually I hardly eat meat to be honest unless it is minced. So steak, chicken are things I will eat but really carefully and chew well and eat slowly. I usually have salads and veges first. Everything in small bites. Sometimes if you get a piece of food lodged in there then everything else will just pile itself on top until it goes up to you oesophagus!!

the other ephiphany I had was that maybe your meals are too close together. Are you eating just because it is that time of the day, or because you are actually hungry. Sometimes the food can take 12 hours to digest,,,esp raw or low processed foods so you are probably still a bit full from lunch. You probably need to have a good chat to your doctor or dietician and I find that writing down what I ate that might have triggered the problem and then removing it for a while helps to sort out what's ok and what's not.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
