Airport scanners and the band

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been questioned after being forced through an airport scanner? I have only been through one once this past summer pre band and honestly I don't really like even the slightest amount of radiation passing through me when I can avoid it. Obviously the band shows up. What do they ask you? I'm flying 4 times in November and don't want to get stopped all the time. I know you can actually opt out and get a pat down instead which I might do.

Thanks,

Melissa

If you mean the full body scanners, I don't believe they see under the skin, just clothing.

As for metal dectors, band won't set them off.

And yes, you can opt out of the full scan for a pat down. I think the scanners are at use at 19 airports so far.

cocoabean the indianapolis airport has an x-ray scanner...def shows what's going on inside. I have the lapband card in case I ever do get questioned for what all the tubing is for. haha

I DID set off the metal detector scanner in a federal courthouse recently. I have flown a few times since the band without any problems. I am however going to get a card when I go to my doctor next week.

Courthouse detectors are more sensitive than airport ones. But the port has very little metal. I did superior court jury duty for 3 months and the band didn't cause a problem. But it wasn't federal. :wink2:

That's not what TSA's site says. hmm..the Govt, lie? How odd!

They even say if a person put explosives in a body cavity it could not be seen on the new scanner. It also says that the images are seen in a closed room. I am curious how you saw them?

it was on the news here when they were installed and the camera guy was standing there taping someone go through and showed what was on the screen....so not sure if they are in a closed room or not. I haven't flown since they were installed...my doctor here says everyone in his practice needs to get the card for tht very reason

Thanks for the info. I'll ask about getting a card next Tuesday when I go for my first fill.

There's a part in the port that's metal that may set off a metal detector...I'd assume that'd be rare, but it's apparently possible.

I have to fly next month and if I have the problem, I'll just show them my card :-)

I don't know much about those things, but the more I hear the creepier it sounds...Hopefully by November I'll be less body-conscious. :wink2:

Where do we get a card? Is this mainly for use to show you have a medical implanted device. Thanks!

I would of never thought of that. I have flown about 5 times since getting the lapband November 13,2009. I never had problems with it. I've only been in Raleigh,NC airport and Minneapolis airport though.

But here's my question....

If there is a small amount of metal in the band, then shouldn't we be aware of this if we are ever in the situation such as getting an MRI or something critical like that? I would find that information nice to know. I mean if that is true about the metal being in the band, and imagine someone getting an MRI - that can cause huge problems!!!

Anyone know this?

Not sure how similar they are, but I had a CT scan after my surgery to check for blood clots and it all seemed ok with me. :-)

I thought those machines were magnetic...Freaky...

I'm pretty sure CT scan machines are not magnetic. MRI machines are though.

They say that lapbands are made of silicone and titanium - which is a metal. This is a good question to bring up to your surgeon!!

Ahhh yes, you're right. I think CT scans use radiation.

Far out...That's freaky thinking about it.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
