Heartbroken

Recommended Posts

Well, those of you that know my story remember that I have really been busting my rear to get everything done in order to have my surgery. I got my approval this a.m. and then called Dr. Bauman's office to tell them. He does not have an opening to do it before my insurance quits covering. I knew this was a possibility- but it is still hard to accept. I have worked so hard to get everything done. I was really hoping this would be my Christmas miracle. The only chance I have is for someone to cancel or reschedule.

I have really enjoyed this site. And have learned tons!!! Thank you for all the support you have given me. My prayers will continue to be with you all.

Our prayers go with you! I believe in miracles. Someone could still cancel or reschedule.

I don't know if it's a possibility or not, but have you called any other surgeon's offices, i.e. Prebeterian Hospital's Bariatric center?

Is RNY an option? If so, Dr. Kuwada or someone at CMC might be able to operate?

Karen, you are so sweet. No, I really don't know what to do. Especially with this being the 12th of December. I guess I just need to pray for a miracle.

Oh hang in there....Keep your faith and prayers going and you never know what will happen. It's worth a try to call another Dr. I know Dr. Voellinger is staying and has opened his own pratice. I don't know what his schedule is like but you could try calling them. Also don't give up on your insurance. Check with them that since you got your approval if it's schedule in Jan could they still cover? I would ask and lastly...until Jan 06 is here you want know for sure if your insurance is going to cover it not. It could be something that slips back in there at the last minute...

Hang in there we are still praying for you...also there is no need to leave us...we can still be great support for you in any journey you have. I said today and I will say it again...this is my family!!!!

Hang in there, you know that if it is meant to be it will be done. Don't give up! Maybe even go into the offices and see if the face to face plead would help.

Good Luck,

Where is Dr. Voellinger? I remember calling his office when I first started, trying to find a dr. But I think they told me there just wasn't enough time. How good is the office staff there? Those of you that has dealt with them- is there anyone you think I should talk to? Dr. B is taking off the week before and the week after Christmas. That is why his schedule is so tight.

Is there anyone here that has gotten into a pretty good relationship with someone who works there that might would try to help me? I am really drawing at straws, huh? At this point, I can't be embarrassed- I'm to the point of begging. Swallowing my pride.

It looks like December would be a slower month for surgeries.

A little background, I am a 48 year old mom to 4. 5 years ago I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Immediately, it grabbed hold of me and has turned me inside out. I have ALOT of pain. I am currently taking a medication that is $6000 mo. Thank goodness my ins. co. has been paying it. I only pay $35 as a co-pay. There are lots of days I cannot walk well or even walk at all. This lack of being able to move my body around is what has caused my weight to go up, up, up. I wanted this surgery to help get weight off of my joints so that I can live a part way normal life. I'm just not ready to be in the bed or wheelchair yet. The dr. says the one thing he would guarantee would help with this disease is weight loss. I was seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and it's just hard to have it taken away from you. I've always been the type to want to lose by a mile than by an inch. Too frustrating.

You all are more than welcome to find me a dr. tomorrow. LOL Not any dr., a dr. with openings!!! :):)

A lot of people cancel last minute... Just make sure they know how important it is for you to have this done, and that you would be there in 10 minutes if someone cancels.

I was in the same situation as you. I had Anthem insurance. I did all the pre-op weight loss, and got to meet with the surgeon. She was a little concerned about my blood clotting levels and asked me to see a specialist. My company changed insurance companies 1 week later!

I had to start all over again with Cigna (which you need to track six month progress).

I gave up on July 1st last year, gained all of my pre-op weight back (35+ pounds). I finally got back on track 2 months ago but this time, I joined a gym (Planet Fitness, only $10 a month!)

No I am now on my pre-op diet again. I need to loose 32 pounds. I have already lost 14. I need to go to the gym more often.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
