Just curious, how many calories do you eat a day? I fluctuate between 800 - 1000 calories a day on average, but my weight loss just plateaued again. I think I might be under eating, but what do you guys think?

That is exactly what my surgeons nurse told me...I was in starvation mode, but for me, I was taking in 600-800 calories a day. I increased my exercise (mostly walking) and increased my food intake (mostly increasing protein) to about 1000 calories a day. And the weight loss began....I have now lost 48 pounds in 3 months....I average 2-4 lbs loss a week. Good luck!!

Oh yea....buy yourself a pedometer. I never knew how many calories I burn just walking around my house, work, etc. One day I burned almost 900 calories!!

am not exceeding 950 calories a day and I am consistantly losing weight. About one pound every 3-4 days. When I want to lose faster I have been doing a bootcamp 3x a week and on the off days I will only eat 600-700 calories.

Listen to your doctor and not everyone else that has an opinion on what you should be doing. You are not on starvation mode.

I started with 650-700 but I've bumped them up to 1,000. More exercise calls for more calories, or else you will plateau. But, everyone's caloric needs differ insanely, so I'd say test the waters and find what's best for you. Add 100-200 calories and see what that does.

Research has proven that those on a diet of 1200 calories lose more weight, more consistently (fewer plateaus) than those eating less. The lower you drop your calories, the more efficient your body becomes (metabolism slows) at hanging on to the calories you're eating. It's a survival mechanism.

Obviously, as evidenced by famine victims in third world countries, your body will eventually have to give in and you'll lose weight, but why do it the hard way? I read about people on this forum who spend 2-3 hours per day every day on strenuous exercise, eating 800 calories a day and I just shake my head. Seems to me they're doing it the hard way but then each to his own.

So true, I have increased my exercise to 1 hour a day and I keep my calories no less than 1200 but no more than 1600 and I have lost 4 pounds in one week which is more than have lost in the past three months put together! It's important to keep your calories up if you are increasing your workouts just like the other posters stated.

I eat 800-900/day and have, since banding. I have had a couple of very brief plateaus, but loss has resumed quickly.

I don't buy into the "starvation mode" theory; there isn't peer-reviewed evidence to back it up. Some people may, indeed, need more calories than I do.

But most of us have ample fuel stored on our bodies in the form of fat--and our bodies simply are NOT ever in the position of "starving." As we get smaller, though, metabolism does decrease (smaller bodies need more fuel)---so loss tends to slow a bit.

The common wisdom is to shake things up by eating more; for me, this is not a good approach---it causes gain. So I look over my journals, see whether things are creeping in that needn't, and if I'm doing well, I just tough the plateau out. If I need to make changes (and here, I usually try to do it with exercise so that I don't pare down calories further), I do that.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
