Recommended Posts

Have you stocked up on items before the surgery? I have been out and purchased Soups, Jello, puddings, apple sause etc. Any suggestions from anyone out there on other items I will need please let me know asap!!!

Today I added some Crystal Light to my vanilla Bariatic Advantage shake and it was yummy. If u want to get some Crystal Light it might be helpful. I used grapefruit flavor which I love.

Do I tell my sister about my surgery or not? She is a very negative person and had gastric bypass 5 years ago and still suffers from throwing up and is pretty miserable. I dont need any negativity around me and I want this to be a success!!! Help!

I would not tell her since you describe her as negative, at least not until your weight loss begins to show.

All of you using vanilla Protein Powder, did you try mixing it with orange juice? Maybe it would be like a creamsickle?

Hi All

Oct 7 here.

I am reading a lot about all the appointments you all have to attend. I am in australia and here you see all the Drs and dietician on the same day. It does take about 4 hours but its so easy. I had no psychiatrist appointment and no plotting of diet and exercise. I dont understand why they make it so hard for you to get healthy.

Does every one in the states have to do these things before banding?

Many of us have to do these things due to either insurance requirements or the surgeon is protecting him/herself from lawsuits.

Banding will take place 10/2. I am on day 4 of Carnation Instant Breakfast and am doing OK. Whenever my hubbie is eating I take a "whiff' which I find somewhat helpful. It does help to have a good imagination!

My stress right now is work. I am on the schedule as FMLA and my co-workers are either worried or nosey about my absence since they keep asking me what the deal is. I am very private about this and have told 2 work friends only.

My boss has been distant and called me in on Monday to discuss my ability to "cope" and mentioned my FMLA 3 different times. My work performance is and always has been stellar. I feel picked on and think she is angry that I have not confided in her and am taking time off.

Help me sort this out please. I don't want to go into surgery stressed out:crying:

Bless you all!

Nosey people just drive me nuts. Just be confident that you have that stellar work performance record and you have that FMLA to protect you :yesnod: If they keep on asking you, you should mention HIPAA to someone. It is none of their business and they really should not be asking or talking about you. I hate nosey people.

I would not tell her since you describe her as negative, at least not until your weight loss begins to show.

Let her find out as you continue your journey maybe you can inspire her to find out why she still has such problems. I am glad you did not get discouraged by your sister. My sister had gastric by pass 2 years ago and we are each others support now.

Hi, I have done all of my tests and appointments and everything. I start the Protein Shakes on Oct. 6th but dont have the "official" surgery date yet. Should be around the 20th though as that would be 2 weeks on the liquid diet. I can't figure out how to add the ticker to my posts, can someone help me? lol. Do you guys find it very difficult to motivate yourself for daily excercise? I want to meet a walking buddy but haven't lived in my area long, any ideas on ways to find someone? Thanks and congrats and good luck on all the bands!

My dates is Oct 19th but I wasn't told I have to do any specific pre-op diet. Only thing I was told was I had to lose 10lbs before then and I'm already there. I just have to do Clear Liquids after 5pm the day before the surgery and nothing past midnight. I'm hoping to lose a total of 20lbs before Oct 19h....losing weight has never been a problem for me, keeping it off is another story. Good luck everyone!

Getting closer. Had my last official doctor's appointment today (Primary care clearance). Now I only have to re-do my urinalysis later this week (i may have a very minor UTI, but could have been a false read based on a roll rash i was getting over)... am on antibiotics until Thursday... if all looks good, i'm a "go"

after that my op date is Fri 10/8 at 8am . People keep asking if I'm excited, or scared, or worried etc... I don't know if it hasn't hit me yet, or If it is because I am always so relaxed, but I'm not excited OR nervous. It's just time... 3 years coming and I'm really ready to un-fat-ify myself... the only thing I'm excited for is getting to buy clothes at the normal-size-girl shops again (i'm currently around a size 22 at 270 lbs). Seriously, I really love the idea of shopping with normal size friends and not bringing them into my fat shops. the only thing I'm scared about is the IV... I'm terrified of needles, I even asked if I could be numbed before the IV. The only thing I'm scared of are the fills... again with the needles - and I'm a fainter (I have a shock reflex...happens with any sharp pain or system overload - extreme overheat, needles, ear pierced, some injuries).

My doctor asked me as much today, and all I could say is I'm ready, and the only "emotion" I'm feeling is a bit of stress about having to get everything together by next thursday, get caught up with work, pack (I'm moving in with my mom for the first several days) for me and my cat, renew my lease agreement, and set up a maid and some service calls to prettify my appartment while I'm away. Whew! That's a lot - and I work 11 hour days and pretty stressful ones at that - I get home and i'm often too tired to cook. And i ahve to since I live alone!

As for diet, I'm not on any regulated diet - I'm doing 'Slim Fast' for two shakes a day, plus cream of wheat for breakfast, a small Protein for dinner and lunch, and sugar free Jello as needed. I've been pretty consistent at 800-1000 calories and not at all hungry.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
