October 2010 Bandsters!!

Recommended Posts

I am new here as well....hi everyone....I am going in on October 15th to be banded and am very excited!!! I am not having my surgery done here in the US because my Health Insurence won't cover it. So I am going to TJ to have it done. Paying out of pocket....sucks but it will be well worth it in the end!

Got my surgery date today for Oct 6th. Now I am getting nervous and as usual afraid of failing.

@ va_viv....yes I did the upper GI and it was fast and easy. Took longer to get the hospital gown on than the test took.

I will meet with the dietitian next week and find out about pre op fasting. Yuk. Can't believe I am really on my way.

The upper GI was a breeze, definitely!

I have the same fears, it starts with the 2 wk Optifast diet. I'm afraid that I won't be able to do it and if I fail at that what's it going to be like after surgery...BUT we can't think that way...gotta keep pushing and stay positive. WE CAN DO IT!:)

Tons of luck to you all.

Your upper GI was fast and easy? Mine was terrible, and I had the barium swallow version... then again I have a strong gag reflex and the barium was so thick it almost wouldn't move at all in the cup. Choking the entire time  I swear I almost asked for the camera without anesthesia.

Hey guys, have my surgery date for Oct. 7th. I have already started my pre-op diet.:rolleyes2:

It's interesting to see how different doctors have different post-op diets. My doctor has me 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks pureed, 2 weeks soft foods then regular diet.

As far as Protein Drinks go, I have found one that has 24 grams of Protein per scoop and tastes really good. Optimum Nutrition 100% Natural whey in chocolate. I have been drinking it now for about a week with skim milk; tastes just like chocolate milk.

My date is Oct 13.

My doctor doesn't really require me to do a pre-op diet, he says to start reducing your food intake. I'm going to start my self on a pre-op diet to help me prepare for what comes after. :rolleyes2:

Greetings October Bandsters! I just signed up yesterday on this awesome site. I am scheduled for Oct 5. I am in the 2nd day of pre-op diet which means I lived through the 1st! I see several of you had upper GI's...why is that?

My doc has me on a 30 grams of carbs per day + at least 40 grams of Protein pre-op diet. My biggest temptation is bread and Pasta so this is a really good one for me. Second day and so far I don't want to strangle anyone!

Did Most of you get a "tentative" surgery date the first time you went to see the dr? I'm wondering if that's what they will do for me? All they need to be able to submit for an approval from my ins is the medical clearance and medical necessity letters and hopefully they will have those within the next couple of days.

My surgeon waited for the insurance approval before they set the surgery date. Luckily they had my date ready the same day they called me about the approval.

I think it will just depend on what surgeon you go to. Some will set a tentative date and some don't. I think it also may depend on the type of insurance you have.

Good Luck to you!!

My pre-op liquid meals arrived today, not sure how this will taste. It is Bariatric Advantage Meal Replacement, choc and vanilla. I will start tomorrow morning. Met with the dietitian yesty and she says for my 2 week pre-op diet, I can have 2-3 Protein Shakes during the day and 1 Lean Cuisine type 300 cal frozen meal for dinner for the first week. After that, it's Protein shakes, then clear liquid the last day. Challenging and worth it all. Today I am making my appt for pre-op visit at the hospital. :rolleyes2:

I actually like the Bariatric Advantage chocolate.

Sometimes adding a few splenda packets really helps the liquids too.

The variety of pre op diets is really amazing. I only have to do a 3 day all liquid pre op, but my after surgery instructions will be my reality check lol. Three days liquid after surgery, then puree foods for 1 month after surgery, then soft foods for 2 weeks, then regular food.< /p>

I even have to crush my pills to powder the first month afterward, had to get special hormones since the ones I take are time release and you cant' crush the time release stuff.

Is anyone else going to have to crush their pills after surgery?

@ PuppyBandit

Yes, I will have to crush or at least split them into 1/4's. Forget how it is worded. She ordered Calcium crystals and chewable vitamins and they arrived today. For my hormones, I wear the patch thank goodness. Love that patch! :rolleyes2:

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
