Hiatal Hernia and LapBand surgery post op

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I was just banded this past Monday, Aug 9th. My hiatal hernia was also repaired at this time. What I have noticed is a bad ache anytime I take a deep breath on my left shoulder and rib cage. I've been reading around and I now know that this is normal for those who also had hiatal hernia repair on the same day.

My question is, when did your left shoulder or rib pain go away? I'm looking for those like me who had both surgeries on the same day laproscopically. I would hate to have a tight chest and ribcage everytime I take a deep breath. Any help would be great.

I had both on the same day and the shoulder pain and the ability to take a deep breath came back about 6 days post-op. I used my heating pad A LOT though to help ease the discomfort... it worked.

I also had both done when I was banded on 7/22. It took about 2 weeks for it to go away with out it bothering me at all during the day. Take deep breaths through out the day (i know its painful) and walk as much as possible. Let the gas out! It will get better. Good luck!

Ken,

I had the surgery the same day.( Aug. 9th) Its day four and I feel like crap. I have the rib pain and the feeling of my stomach in the back of my throat that just makes me feel like I want to throw up all day. I also had the hernia repaired. I don't know if what I am experiencing is typical, but I know its not fun. Can't sleep and frustrated.

CoriCa,

Hang in there. We're in it together. I still have my rib and shoulder pain but the solace I have is that the pain always goes away. It has gotten better every day but I just want to feel like I did pre-op. Still, I trust everybody when they say it'll eventually go away. I don't have the nauseous feeling just yet. The pain is annoying enough though.

Thanks for the advice stefaniwig. I've been taking deep breaths into the little apparatus they gave me before leaving the hosptital. Yesterday I went out on my own and walked but found myself tired and slow. Afterwards I did feel better though.

One thing I can't stomach though is eating more than one Protein shake. Yuk.

Thanks for the good news KatyinLasVegas. I do use my heating pad but I'm scared it might burn a whole in me after how many times I"ve used it. Lol.

I am 10 day post-op with the same hiatal hernia repair and I still have problems w/ my left shoulder & my rib cage with deep breathes. I go in for my post -op follow up today with my dr. and I'm going to ask him about when we I should feel some relief.

Congrats on the band, welcome to the otherside!!

Today I'm post op day 9, and finally no pain under my ribcage, but it feels sort of tight. Usually the shoulder pain comes back in the evening, especially if I've pushed it (cleaning the bathroom, sorting laundry, loading and emptying the dishwasher, THEN shopping for tile and kitchen cabinets) I thought I was gonna die the day I did all that, which was day 5 post op. I only take the liquid Lortab right before I go to bed, and last night was the first time I didn't take any.

The pain really does get better everyday. But I haven't been able to drink more than one Protein shake a day, and I know I'm drinking enough Water. Oh well, little by little it'll get better.

I had the hernia repair same day also. The pain your feeling is due to the gas. It tends to settle in your chest shoulder area for some reason. Walking helps alot. I bought Gas-x b4 surgery cuz everyone on here was tellling me it would help & sooo glad I did. Gas-x either chewable tabs or dissolving strips work great. Take it 1 day at a time. Dont try to do to much. Your body needs to heal. It will be 4wks for me on monday & you will be feeling better very soon. Best of luck on your journeys and looking forward to getting updates from all of you.

This is a great forum & go to the chat room also. They have been very helpful.

I had both surgeries done at the same time and all I really recall is the wonderful relief I got from pain associated with the hernia. I do remember the doc telling me that I'd feel some pressure and pain from the gas used in the surgery, but it wasn't nearly as uncomfortably after lapband as it was after another surgery I had. Hang in there. It will improve on its own schedule.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
