Pre-op Diet ... Not losing much weight??

Recommended Posts

I am on Day 5 of the pre-op diet  I lost almost 4 pounds in the first 3 days, then day 4 i was up 2 pounds from my loss..? I exercise, drink Water and don't cheat. I've been consuming only 750 to 850 calories a day although some of that has been from low-fat creamy Soups..... what am i doing wrong?? I go for surgery June 4 and really am nervous that if not losing weight now on the pre-op diet, how will i lose weight with the Band???

Any suggestions??

Then pre-op diet for me has been complete hell to be honest. I am on day 4 and I think I am finally starting not to feel as hungry. I wouldnt worry about losing a ton of weight, it is all about shrinking the liver which I am sure you are doing bc your not cheating. I have had alot of trouble with the Protein Drinks and keeping them down:drool:. Yes I have thrown up alot, so I called my doc and tried a couple of other things to make me satisfied. The biggest thing I do now if I feel starving I take my chicken broth, warm it up and put 1 cracker in it. Its not much but it gets me through the day. Also the weight will come off just keep chugging. I am having a hard time as well, but we can do it. My surgery is June 8th and I want to be ready. Good luck to you.

Farm girl-

how are you doing now? I'm hungry alot, but sometimes the thought of food make me feel sick. But i've still lost only the same 5 pounds. I go for surgery on friday and feel like i should just back out since i can't lose weight on liquid, how am i going to lose weight with the band. I've never been a big eater and exercise alot... i'm so tired and sad and feeling like a loser before i even begin. Please tell me you're doing well.. i need to know how everyone else does this...

First off I think you are being way too hard on yourself. The last week for me has been very intense, but I know that no matter if I cheat, if I dont lose exactly what I want to, or if I am feeling sick and scared of what happens after the lap band, I am still moving forward. And you will too. I dont know exactly how much weight I have lost b/c I am scared to get on the scale. I was going to wait until I went in for surgery and get weighed there.

Also I have talked to alot of people who I work with and have had the band for months. They all say that the hardest part is the pre-op diet. That things will change (for the positive) after you get the lap band. None of them have regretted their decesions and I know that you wont either. You wanted this for a reason, now do me a favor and close your eyes and think really hard. If you can see yourself in 6 months from now feeling better and looking better (than get the band). If you see yourself the same as now doubting the lap band and the whole procedure pre and post op, than dont get the band. The choice is your:thumbup:. You have to decide and make it happen. Good luck to you, and just think only 4 more days until your big day.

Oh one other thing. I have came to the conclusin that this whole process will be challenging and that my weight will not be gone overnight. This has been hard for me to except b/c I want my weight gone like 10 years ago. But I am willing to have things go slow b/c I know that in a year from now or even 2, that my health will be so much better and that I will be able to run with my kids instead of watching them run.

Don't feel like a loser.....I am on day 6 of the preop diet and I have only lost 5 lbs....its not because I am cheating because I have not. Went to 3 BBQ's yesterday and did not cave in.

You can do this, this preop diet I am sure is difficult for almost everyone.....I get banded 6/3/10 and nothing and I do mean nothing is going to change my mind. We can do this. Stay on track and just remember the reason why you decided to get banded in the first place.

For me I have already booked my flight for December........I plan on being able to use the regular seatbelt and not a seat belt extender.

I have found the people on this website to be extremely helpful and my surgeon's team are wonderful....I feel victory and so should you !:smile2:

Good luck and God bless !

Sorry you are having a hard time.

Try Muscle Milk...it comes in great flavors and it is very good....my 12 year old son has started drinking them. They have a mocha latte, strawberries n cream, bananas n creme, vanilla creme, chocolate malt and several others. I get them from GNC, Walmart, target, walgreens......Good luck I hope this helps !

thank you for your input. I'm so very glad that there is this forum for everyone to get encouragement and information. I'm just glad to hear that there are people struggling just like me.. its sad but it sometimes feels like i'm so alone and my family doesn't understand and sit there eating pot stickers and fried corn dogs in front of me hard to take.... I really, really appreciate the input and you are all right... i NEED TO PULL my head out of my own self and keep trudging on. I think its the lack of food and self pity that's pulling me down.

i'm sorry that you too have only lost small numbers just like me, i guess our bodies are just too efficient...Thank you again.... June 4 will be here before i know it.. Dallen good luck on the 3rd.. lets please keep in touch.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
