Wednesday last week was week 5 post op, and the first day of a normal diet. I joined the Mother's Day challenge (obviously did NOT meet my goal) and was weighing myself every day. I got easily discouraged because I wasn't losing ANYTHING, and it was suggested to me that I only weigh once a week. I took that advice, and this morning, when I stepped on the scale, my heart sunk when I saw 211.0 vs. the normal 206.8. WTF?

I don't know if it's because I'm eating normal foods again, or what, but I am so afraid to go to the Dr. on Thursday because I know he'll be disappointed. I'm afraid he won't think I'm trying hard enough...and I really am trying!

I know I'm new at this, but I am having THE MOST DIFFICULT time not drinking when I eat, and measuring foods seems pointless, because I am so unsatisfied and end up eating Snacks because I'm so hungry.

Has anyone else experienced this right before their first fill??

If you are drinking with your meals you are washing your food through the band into your big stomach. That is why you are not feeling full and wanting to snack. This is the number one habit to break before you get restriction. (I know its hard, it was the hardest thing I had to learn) You can do it!

Plus I think that being new to the process you should weigh more often that way if you see a trend you can start working on it sooner. I weigh daily but allow for a 2 pound variance so if I weighed 150 yesterday and 152 today I say it doesn't count its just Water, if it says 153 today I start thinking about what I am doing differently and can change.

yes this is totally normal. u have 2 realize that all of our bodies r different n we shed pounds n many ways. it sounds like bandster hell that ur n. If I were u I wouldnt stress about it bc usually the weight doesnt really come off along with restriction until 2nd or 3rd fill. eat while u can but dnt over eat. when u start getting more fills eventually u wont b able 2 consume much food at all n the weight will just fall off along with exercise. I had my surgery n nov of 09 n I was 217lbs now im 167 n its been a very bumpy road trying 2 find the right foods that my body will allow me 2 eat. so dnt stress ur weight will go up n down

It could be a salt intake issue, or some other reason. Wait a few days to weigh and you might be back to normal

In order to gain 1 pound you have to consume 3500 extra calories, so to have a "true" weight gain of 5 pounds you would have had to consume an extra 17, 500 calories above your suggested daily intake in the last week. Since that really isn't feasible don't stress out. Your body is going through a lot. It isn't unusual for the scale to fluctuate when you start back to normal foods, your body is trying to figure our what is going on.

Just continue to follow the rules and don't have a glass anywhere near you at mealtime. This has been an easy one for me but we all struggle with different things (mine is getting enough water). The scale will move in the right direction, just give your body some time to work through all this. In the meantime eat healthy foods and reasonable amounts (whatever your doctor suggested).

I experienced the same thing prior to my first fill. For me, I had to stay away from the scale and weigh only once a week. We have so much fluctuation day to day that the ups and downs drove me crazy and caused too much doubt in myself and what I had gone through - so do what is best for you about the scale.

HTH!

Well, to echo what others have said, you haven't gained 5 pounds of fat.

It's pretty normal to see an upward blip when you add solids back in to your repertoire.

However, it's not "pointless" to measure your foods. If you've been told to stick to a certain amount, it's pretty important that you do so--even if you are not full or satisfied.

It's also important not to drink while eating---your satiety will plummet as a result of having Fluid with foods. What little you do eat will move far too quickly from your pouch to the stomach below.

I wouldn't worry for even a second about going to the doctor. He's seen it all before, and I'd venture to guess that more patients than not are in your shoes. He's not going to be disappointed--and he may have good guidance for you.

Dont worry about it too much at the beginning. I gained about 10 pounds after I was able to eat food again. Just my bodys way of telling me that if I ever went 40 day again without giving it some food I better watch out.

The first month or two is all a learning process for you nad the band. I didnt really start to lose until my third fill. which was 3 months after my surgery. Just hang in there and keep up the great work.

Thank you to you all!

I know that I haven't gained 5 pounds of FAT...in fact, I'm pleased with the way my clothes are fitting. I know i haven't lost nearly what a lot of you are losing directly post-op, but accept that I need to be proactive with measuring, exercise and NOT DRINKING. That's a really hard one for me!!

Still, I really appreciate the consouling you've all given me. I don't feel as disappointed or depressed anymore.

Thanks!

Dont let the scale rule you. weighing once a week was some good advise I had to take to. 2years out from surgery I still weigh on every Mon morning but i do sometimes step on thursdays just to keep myself in check. Now changes dont bother me to much. Its just a number. Usually if I have a 5-6ld gain its from Water retention because I cant let go of the salt shaker. Just have pacience you will be back on track when you get more fills

Well I am glad I am not the only one, I gained 3 lbs when going to regular foods. So devistated, that I knew I was letting my scale become my worst enemy. The worst part about eating normal food, is you just don't realize the sodium intake on some of them. Even with just Cottage cheese. I make all my meals, so not buying anything prepacked. I know because of the high sodium by body is retaining Fluid. We just need to remember that we now have the right tools in place to make this a successful journey!

I also gained a bit the first week i was on normal foods... I think this is somewhat normal. The good news was that the following week i had a pretty good loss, so i just chalked it up to a change in my diet that my body reacted to. Its hard i know; but just give it time. Once your body gets back in "sync" you will start dropping again...good luck...

I got my band 9-28-09, I'm at 9cc's in a 10 cc band. It took forever for me to feel any restriction. I've only lost 16 lbs and that has been a challenge. It was like I gained 10 lbs the first few months being on real food. I wasn't watching my Protein or calorie intake. I was just thinking the band was going to work without my participation...boy was I wrong. So now I am measuring, counting calories, exercising, and still I only lose about 1-2 lbs a week and from what I understand that is normal. I am going for my last fill this coming Tuesday and hope that this is what gets me to my "sweet spot". Don't give up, it only gets better. :)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
