having my second "first fill" on Wednesday!

Recommended Posts

I had a fill done 4/14, and had to be completely unfilled on 4/17 because it was too tight, I was vomiting for more than 24hrs, and was dehydrated. I'm going back this Wednesday for my second attempt at a first fill, and I'm scared! I know they Dr won't be putting as much in as he did last time (3.5 cc), so I shouldn't have the same reaction, but I'm still terrified!

Does he do the fill under flouroscope? I heard that "blind fills" can be hit or miss. My doctor does the flouroscope so he knows if there is room for things to go through or not. I also stayed the night at the recovery center to make sure the fill was comfortable. My problem with my first fill was that it wasn't tight enough after a few days. I went back 2 weeks later to get filled some more (and he also looked for any leaks etc.) Now I am trying to get used to the tightness and what foods I can eat - lol

No, he didn't do it under a flouro the first time. He actually had to try twice the find my port the first time, which is why I think I ended up with a huge welt.

At least you know now how much you DON'T want in your band this time. Fluoro may or may not have prevented it. Sometimes it will look fine, but then you get swelling from being filled after. My stomach is REALLY sensitive, so I have only had 2 small fills in my almost 2 years of being banded.

Do you know how much he plans on trying this time? Hopefully no more than half of the last one. It is so much easier to go back and get a little more than it is to suffer from being too tight. Good luck and I hope this fill is easier on you.

I'm going to ask that he put in no more than 2cc (he did 3.5 last time). I have a trip out of state in two weeks, and don't want to have any band (being too tight) issues while down there!

That's good. Mine routinely does 4ccs, I asked for half, so she put 2ccs in. When I sat up and drank Water, I told her it went down slowly, so she pulled one out, leaving me with 1cc, which was perfect. Just listen to your body when you drink after the fill and you should be fine.

You are soooo lucky! I hear people getting 10+ fills in the first year. That is just crazy! I am hoping my 2nd was the key for a while.

Flouro may help although IT IS difficult to predict the swelling in your stomach with a fill. I was on liquids for several days after my fills and my doctor strongly recommended popsicles to help with the swelling.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
