are staying in the hospital after surgery? My surgery date is Friday April 30th and it is out-patient. But I have been looking at pictures of those banded in the hospital, reading about what to bring to the hospital, etc.... and now wondering if this is really a "out-patient procedure" as my surgeon stated!?

I stayed only because I traveled. I could have easily gone home, and would have if I had the choice. I'm sure it will be fine...... hugs!!

I had my surgery 3-5-10 at 8am in the morning. By 3pm, I had left the hospital. My best recommednation - walk, walk, walk! Of the 8 of us who had surgery that day 3 went home and 5 stayed. Those that went home where younger (40"s or less) and seemed to be pretty healthy before surgery. Those who stayed over had medical issues or were older (60's). I had no post op pain and never even took a tylenol! I was SO happy to be in my bed that night! Good Luck! It is the best thing I ever did!

My surgeon has everyone stay over and does a barium swallow the next morning to make sure your band looks good before you head home.

I would have had to stay at the hospital even if I was outpatient because anesthesia makes me vomit (no matter what they give me to prevent it).

It's certainly alot easier to sleep at home.

Discuss it with your surgeon. Maybe he/she is flexible with this.

I just had my surgery on 4/19 and I had to stay the night because my insurance required it. Now after having spent the night, I think that I would have much rathered to have gone home. I didn't get any rest while there because it felt like someone was coming in the room every 15 mins. whether it was to take my vitals or change an IV bag or whatever. I was glad to get to go home just to be able to rest!!! I couldn't get out of the bed to go to the bathroom or to get up and walk the halls without calling the nurse's station and waiting on them to come to my room. The doctors want you up and walking as soon as possible but I had to wait a few hours for the nurse before I could get up. So again, I truely think that I would have much rathered to have come home the same day!:thumbup:

I was home a few hours after surgery. I don't like hospitals, as I can never rest good. All I wanted to do was sleep the first night, and walk around the house, when I was awake. I think it just depends on your health and the doctor.

I was also banded on 4/19 at 7am. My surgery was outpatient, but I was not discharged until 5pm due to the number of hours post op that my surgeon wanted to wait before doing the barium swallow. I do agree with Banded2010 though. I could get NO rest in the hospital. One lady even work me up to let me know that she was switching out the sharps container! LOL!! I was thrilled to get home and actually have an uninterrupted nap!

I will be staying overnight because I'm older, and also because I too have problems with anesthesia. I hate the hospital- I would much rather go home. Maybe I can talk my doc into it...

I was banded 2/3/10 and was GLAD I stayed overnight! Not due to complications of anything but I just was sooooooo tired that I COULD NOT STAY AWAKE! I was out of surgery by 9:30ish and pertty much slept 'til the next morning. I remember getting up a few times (they made me) and of course them coming in to check the bp and respitory stuff but not much else. I was tired for 2 weeks after with no energy! Of course, I also read on here where some people go back to work the next day or so!:thumbup:

I was banded the 19th. My hats off to anyone who goes home the same day....even with an overnight it was tough. obviously, if you are "outpatient" you are outpatient, but if you have the opportunity to just relax and recoop, i'd urge you to take it....its not like you won't be fully responsible for your recovery soon enough!

My surgeon's standard is for everybody to stay overnight. It was good for me to do so.

I had my surgery on Oct 30, 2009. Both I and my room mate spent the night, as neither of our insurance would pay unless was overnight stay. She was quite sick, as she is diabetic. I was up and walking around the hospital with my IV pole. I walked around all day and 2 x at night, as I, also, could not sleep. But, I live and hour from the hospital, I would not have liked to gotten home and needed the nurse. All in all it was an ok time.

SOP for my surgical practice is outpatient and my insurance company does not require an overnight stay. FWIW, I will be having my surgery done at a major hospital in downtown Chicago.

My mom had her LB done by the same surgical team I will be using and she stayed overnight because she was a clot risk.

My procedure will be outpatient. A friend of mine who also used the same surgical team was in at 7:00am and home by 3:00 that afternoon.

I stayed overnight. I was self pay, but it included a night stay. The surgeon said it is actually a luxury for me because you can rest and not worry about complications. But they also did the barium swallow the next. I was glad I stayed, i was too weak to go home the same day, even though it was my plan.

My doc requires you to stay 24 hours after you get admitted to your room, no exceptions. My surgery was supposed to be at 9:00, the day before was rescheduled to 1:30, and it was after 3:00 before they took me back. I ended up not getting to a room until after 8:00 p.m. so had to stay until 8:00 p.m. the next day. It was a very long and boring day. I would have preferred to go home same day but not an option with him.

Hi Leslie, I am staying overnight in the hospital. I'm getting banded on May 5th and it is a 2 hr. drive for me so I tihnk that is partly the reason. But I am glad i'm staying overnight.. makes me feel better knowing I will be watched for at least 24 hrs. If your ins. is paying for the surgery they will prob. pay for an overnight. I would find out if you really feel that strongly about it.
