Pre-op Diet... and not hungry?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon recommends a 2 week pre-op diet for the severely obese. I definitely fit that category. His directions are:

Week 1:

Breakfast - High protein/low carb/low calorie Protein shake

lunch - Sensilbe small lunch with lean Protein and a vegetable/fruit

dinner - High protein/low carb/low calorie Protein Shake

Week 2:

Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner - High protein/low carb/low calorie Protein Shake

Of course he allows all the Water and sugar-free pops and beverages you want.

I have chose EAS Myloplex Carb Control and AdvantEDGE products because of they meet the docs requirements. Each shake has between 110-180 calories.

I have read so many times how the pre-op diets are very frustrating. Today I have only had about 400 calories and only will get 160 more before bedtime. I am a little sluggish but not hungry at all. Maybe because it took me 45 minutes to finish the shake and lunch at each meal.

Do you think I am doing something wrong or possibly getting too many calories for this ramp-up to the surgery?

What was your lunch? The definition of sensible could be different.

Anyway, assuming it was 3-4 oz. of lean meat and a salad with low-cal dressing.

Consider yourself lucky, and go with the flow. Not everyone feels they are starving while on the pre-op diet. I had more hungry days and less hungry days. You may do the same, but here's hoping it stays easy for you!!

Best wishes!

I was on a 500-600 calorie pre-op diet for 3 weeks - and the first few days were the hardest. Like you, I felt sluggish and weak.

Hunger was strong for a few days and then my body adapted to it and realized it wasn't getting any more than 500 calories!

Good luck with surgery and let's hope that your hunger stays away for the next couple weeks!

It seems like I am the only one that can have only liquids.

(10 day diet) My BMI is like 35.8. I am so hungry I could eat my shoe. I wonder why it is that some people get to eat?

I was on medifast for 24 days - it sucked! Mostly Soup, some oatmeal - but it all tasted like CRAP.

Different surgeons have different rules - I lost 23 pounds on the pre-op diet, so I know it worked and surgery was finished in 19 minutes and I felt awesome after.

Nope, you are not alone . This is day 10 of all-liquids-all-the-time. Hang in there...I've had some days that are more hungry than others...heck, I'm up typing now because the rumbly-in-the-tumbly woke me up! I hope it gets better for you soon....

Hello everyone!

My surgery is coming up, too... and my all liquid diet (OptiFast) will begin on April 27. It requires I drink the shake 5 times per day... total of 800 calories. I'm also allowed to have sugar free Jello, and sugar free non-carbonated drinks... and of course, Water.< /span>

I'm so thankful I'm going to have surgery but I must admit I'm so scared I'm not going to make it thru the 2 weeks of liquids ONLY!

Glad to be here and see so many of you have successfully survived! HUGS

I am having surgery on 4/23 and I am also on Optifast shakes (min of 3 max of 5 per day) for 2 weeks prior to the surgery. The first few days were extremely difficult, but now it is getting easier.

Also am allowed SF Jello, SF Popsicles, SF beverages - basically any liquids that you can see through

Dr. says it can help shrink your liver up to 40 percent prior to surgery.

I also believe that it helps you identify the dreaded "head hunger" that I have read so much about!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
