Surgery 4 days ago and still in PAIN

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery Thursday, it's now Sunday and I feel awful. I'm super nauseated and the gas pains are horrific. Anybody have a similar experience? How long did this last for you????

Have you tried Gas-X strips and are you walking? It takes about a week for the gas to get out of the system. There is light at the end of the tunnel. I promise. Hang in there.

You're getting there - don't worry! I think the first five days were the worst for me but it gets better every day. Make sure you're getting up and moving around - it really helps.

My surgery was January 9th - It took me two full weeks before I realized I was no longer in any sort of pain. I can now sleep on either side at night and don't have pain wearing somewhat tight jeans/dress slacks when I'm out and about.

Take the pain meds you've been prescribed at the time you are supposed to take them - when I ran out liquid tylenol worked pretty good too. It will get better!

I had my surgery on Wednesday and I know the pains you are having. I have been told that alot of it has to do with the swelling inside and makes breathing a little harder due to the decrease in room inside. On Saturday, I felt the worse that I have only because I had these hiccup episodes after trying to drink anything...they hurt. Today when I woke up, I didn't know if they would continue but seem not to have appeared today. I drank my protien shake this morning and have drank some crytal light with my crushed Multi-Vitamin and feel better than I did. I still have some pain in my left side (feels like the pain when you run 2 miles) but it is so much easier to drink today. When you look at this surgery and realize everything that was done to you, I think 4 days is awesome to be doing this well. I hope your days get better like mine have and I am ready to return to work tomorrow (desk job) and I know it will be a better day tomorrow. Good luck on your journey..

Don't worry, it gets better! I know my 3rd or 4th day was the worst and it freaked me out because I was expecting that everything should get better after I left the hospital (not worse!). I highly recommend doing a ten minute walk every 1-2 hours. It REALLY helps more than anything else and you will feel tons better within just a couple days.

Thanks so much for all of the encouragement. I think it just really threw me that I felt worse today than yesterday. I am trying to move around but seems like when I do, I get more nauseated. Still haven't been able to tolerate my vitamin/calcium. Maybe in another day or two. I teach (older kids) and thought I would be able to go back tomorrow but now realize there's no way so I'm taking the week off!

My surgery was Wednesday and the gas pain is 90% gone, but the port site tenderness is definitely still there. WALK, WALK, WALK. Try liquid tylenol if you run out of your prescribed pain meds. Take your time doing things, don't rush. Remember, this is all about you, let your friends and family help you out so you don't over do. GOOD LUCK!!!

I too am on the exact same time table as you and your symptoms sound almost identical to mine. I've read the other posts and I hope that the walking helps! I almost dread taking my meds as the bloating seems to be the worst then, although I have found that dissolving them is better than crushing them. After this gas/bloating I then find it hard to keep up with my Fluid and Protein Drinks intake and I also suffer from Gout and I'm afraid I'm not flushing out my Uric Acid build up Ican only hope it gets better

I also had my surgery on Wednesday. It does get better and better. Walking has helped a ton to help with the gas pains. In addition stay ahead of your pain take your meds as ordered. You can do this the worst part is over. Baby steps each day. Hang in there and good luck buddy. (I agree there is a LIGHTat the end of the tunnel-walk it out if tolerated  )

PS- This site also helps tremendously you will find awesome support.;)

Just to give you an update from this morning...I really feel good today and drinking my fluids, walking are helping alot. I rid myself of the hiccups (that sucked) and I actually feel great right now. I just started getting hungry for the first time since surgery but the S.F. Jello and broth have been a big help. I had the same thought as you...how could it get worse afterwards...all I can say is "they have some good drugs." I am heading back to work tomorrow and know that it will not be a problem. I did not have the naseau that many have had so I can't comment on that...Hang in there and know it gets better.

Again, thanks so much everybody! Your support has been so awesome today as I have really struggled. I hope I'm through the worst of it as I did actually have 2 different times (seconds) where I thought Hamburger Helper, of all things, sounded good. What a gift this forum was for me today!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
