am I eating too much????

Recommended Posts

okay guys, I am one week out of surgery as of today! I had my post op appt. yesterday and I've lost 13 lbs since my pre op.

My question is this: my doctor allowed me to move up to soft foods yesterday as tolerated.

So, this morning for Breakfast at 7 a.m. I had a chocolate carnation instant breakfast.

Then, at 9:30 (just now) i was still hungry!!!! So, I went into the kitchen and had about 1/3 cup of cottage cheese with a half of a pear (no sugar added, of course!)

Now, i feel full.

I am hoping that I'll be okay until around 1 p.m. or so.

I just don't want to over eat. I mean, that's what got me here in the first place.

I have no restriction in my band. I won't get a fill until about 3 weeks.

Last night, I had about a 1/2 cup of food... mashed potatoes and squished peas (without the hull). I was still hungry an hour later... and then I ate about 1/4 cup of frozen yogurt.... STILL hungry about 30 mins later. SO, i had about a 1/3 cup of Cereal with skim milk.

I woke up starving!!!! And that's when I decided to do the Carnation Instant Breakfast drink.

SO, what do you think????

Please, be brutally honest.

I do not want to screw this up. But, my doc keeps saying that i shouldn't be hungry. so, LAPBANDSTERS, I am begging for your opinions!

Protein will help will the hunger. I don't think you have done anything to screw things up yet. Just follow what your doctor or nut tells you about food/exercise and you won't go wrong.

However, I would ask that doctor if he has had lapband surgery and what is he basing his opinion of you not being hungry on????? Everyone is different and if you read this forum enough, you will realize the differences big time. Don't let your doctor "group"you in with everyone else. He should be listening to you and what you know about your body.

Jenny, I am one week post op today as well. My doctor hasn't moved me onto soft food yet, but I would love it if he did! haha If this makes you feel any better, yesterday I did this for my meals. B-1 Atkins Protein Shake, L-1 container of SF vanilla pudding, D-Cream of chicken Soup. The times that I got hungry between, I would drink Water, usually that took care of that rumble in my tummy. I'm still in the process of figuring out real hunger and head hunger. I am trying to get used to only eating 3 times a day as well!

You should be consuming about 3-4 oz with your meals. It also sounds like you aren't getting that much Protein. Try incorporating some white chicken in a can (packed in water) with a tiny bit of FF mayo. Or even tuna with a tiny bit of FF mayo. Also Carnation Instant Breakfast drink doesn't have much Protein in it. I would suggest a higher Protein Drink mix. My NUT makes us drink whey Protein Isolates. They run a little on the expensive side but they do work. I drink 2, 8oz drinks a day. Sometimes I only need 1. But I'm not feeling hungry and I've only had 1 fill. You are hungry because you aren't getting enough of the protein in your system. Re fried Beans with a little FF cheese and salsa is good once and awhile also. All Natural Peanut Butter is soft and you can add that to different foods for your protein also. You also should be drinking 64oz of fluids in between your meals. If you have a hard time doing that I suggest some sugar free ice pops. That gets your fluids in also.

Hope this helps you a little. It's all about the protein. Get more protein in then anything else.

On the mushie phase I ate..

Breakfast..2 scrambled eggs or Oatmeal/blueberry

lunch.....cream Soups 1. cup

dinner....4 oz. turkey burger patty with cheese, and steamed soft veggies.

Turkey burgers are a great source of Protein get a scale and weigh your meat.. make 4oz patties.

I think you can have any meat in the mushie stage as long as it is "mushie" soft.

If you are getting hungry between meals, before your first fill, just eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, or maybe some string cheese. Try to stay away from stuff with sugar. IF you eat cereal make sure its healthy cereal.

Just remember.. once you get to the reg food stage most of those softer foods are GONZO. You are supposed to eat solid Proteins, and more green veggies.

Protein is soo important. I do not drink my protein.. I eat it.

I had my surgery the same day as you. I have been on full liquids since Monday and I can move to soft foods on Saturday.

I haven't been hungry at all yet---in fact the times my tummy rumbled I think it was telling me I was full. I do have 4cc in a 10cc band though so that may be making a huge difference.

I am also eating/ drinking 60grams of Protein a day. I use unjury mix. it's 20g Protein per scoop. I use the chocolate as a shake in wtr/ milk and the unflavored mixes in great with Soup or Water drinks. The chicken flavored is awesome as a broth.

I also use the protein bullets----26g I drank one yesterday---8 sips---it wasn't that bad--not that great but it got the protein in.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
