My 1St Blog

HI, I have recently started my journey. I went to my first seminar and from there I recieved a call that explained that my insurance will cover the surgery up to 90%. My first Dr.'s appt is scheduled for May 23rd and I am very excited about starting this journey. Just to let you know a little bit about myself....... I am 31 years old 5'4 and 275 lbs which is the heaviest I have been in my entiiiire life . I have always had weight issues starting from middle school . Even though I wasnt the smallest growing up I was very athletic and with my father being a physical ed teacher and a basketball coach I stayed busy playing basketball and volleyball . Moving foward it seemed like once I reached my twentys I started piling the weight on....I think my problem is that I am an emotional eater and I eat when I im bored or upset . I find myself over eating alot . My father passed away 4 years ago which was a wake up call for me . My father had hypertension, diabetes, kidney failure and congestive heart failure which majority runs in my family. I have tried everything under the sun to aid in my weight loss. I tried weight watchers, working out and even tried out being a vegetarian which lasted about 3 mnths my latest venture was weight loss pills which did take off 36lbs and at that time brought me down to my lowest which was 219lbs but as soon as I loss my job which forced me to be home more than I liked i gained it all back plus 20 addtl. I am now at my breaking point. I find that is getting to be a task at doing the simplest everyday things like taking a shower. I recently had a biometric screening at my exsisting job which notified me that I have high blood pressure which prompted me to make an appt with my pri DR. which suggested the lap band as an option. I know alot of people at my current job(which is a call center posistion) that have had the lap band surgery both successfully and unsucessful. The succesful ones told me that they follow the lifestyle change to a "T" and the unsuccessful ones admitted that they have found ways of going around the band or that once they reached their goal they started back in their old ways and gained all the weight back. I am now at the time in my life where I reconize that i need to make a major change in my lifestyle, hence the option of lap band. At first my mom and two sisters were against the surgery and stated that I can do this on my own. But you see where on my own has gotten me . I took my mom ans sister to the seminar with me and now they are supportive. I am now looking foward to the process and the surgery in the future. I understand the lap band is a tool and is up to me to make the changes in my life necessary. I haved read a numerous amount of blogs and posts which have become very helpful...........Wish me luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post-Op 2-1/2 Weeks

Feeling well and enjoying a little bit of texture in my pureed foods. I'm committing to hitting the gym 4-5 days/week for about 1 hour each. I do notice if I try to eat my last protein meal too early (like 5pm), I am hungry later at night. Maybe I need to just get to bed earlier since I'm trying not to eating another meal or snack after 7pm.

Tryn To Convince Myself I'm Not A Quitter

Ok so my one year anniversary is quickly approaching and right now i'm hovering around a 42 pound lost. my goal was to be in a size 12 top and bottom..if you've been following my blog then you know where i stand with that. so i bought another size 12 jeans but they were petitie and i figured that just meant shorter, but i couldnt get them past my thighs either(but could put on a 12 skinny jeans..tight but got them on and buttoned) WTH!!! i am so frustrated with the whole jeans thing. when i started my journey, my doc told me most patients lose half of their desired weight in the first year, sooo if i go by that i am well ahead of schedule, but if i go by the goal I set for myself...doesnt look like i'm going to make it..ugh! so my question is if i decided to stop stressing about the jeans and be content with fitting 12 dresses and tops..and L scrubs and L tops..would i be a quitter. one one hand i feel like i am and on the other going by my doc's standards i've done great. what do you guys think? HELP!!!

Emosional Eating

Today was the day that I realized that I feel as if I can outeT the sleeve.I suppose in reality that is not really possible but I have got a lot of stuff going on that makes me want to eat (now my child wants to stay here in Dubai and finish uni and I just dont think it is the right thing to do,but she is grown up,what can I do)   The plan is from tomorrow I have to log everything I eat.Fitday.com is a program that I like...I find myfitnesspal difficult. So,it is me and y compulsion to eat life better,to eat stress away that is getting tested so early in this weight loss process.   The fact that I am so aware of the want to eat is good.I look at the brownies and walk away.I look at the cookies and decide tomorrow.Maybe this is a good thing to have to flex the portion muscle before the portion size gets bigger a few years from now.

To Fill, Or To Unfill... That Is The Question!

I have seen many blog posts on here regarding tightness of the band. My personal experience with the band over the past 4 years has been constantly refilling and unfilling. Well I shouldn't say constantly, because for the first 2 years I stayed at 2cc (in a 10cc band) and then all of the sudden needed to add more saline. For the past 2 years, I have had issues with tightness and have had numerous fills and unfills. I like to drink a cup of hot tea or coffee every morning to help loosen my band up. There are still some times where I find my band unbearably tight which is usually after sitting for long periods of time (road trips, I travel a lot). My suggestion is that if you are not able to keep any liquids down then you should immediately contact your Dr. and do not hesitate. Also, I have seen posts regarding "throwing up"... If you are throwing up at least 1 a day (routinely) you are probably too tight... CONTACT YOUR DOC!

Struggling :(

Ok today I feel a bit like crying. I am trying, really trying at this journey to be successful, but why do I just feel like I'm flubbing up? And yes, I don't mean flubbing, but I'm trying to keep this PG or at least PG13, ok?   I finally downloaded myfitnesspal.com, where before I was writing everything as I took it in my mouth (the old Weight Watcher's lingo of "write it if you bite it" comes to mind); however, everyone says use fitness pal, so I'm trying that. Omg I'm not eating enough. How in hades DO I EAT MORE? Yeah, I know ... all the newbies that possibly read this are now thinking "WHAT?" but I cannot eat enough to half of the calories this thing says for me to do. And I went to the gym. Mind you I only did 2 miles, I feel like I was lazy but it was a rushed amount of time and this thing says I burned 384 cals. So I'm now about to where I started after breakfast. What? Oh wait I forgot I "ate" the rest of my breakfast shake later. Well whoopee, only 1174 more calories to consume. It's 7 pm. Place your bets if you think I'm gonna get that in. No wonder I'm ravenous late at night. HOW DO I DO THIS? grrrr   And is it ok to count Cytomax pure protein tangerine or tropical drinks as my water for the day? Per my dr., I thought so... per myfitnesspal, no... that has it's own category.     Am I going to fail at this? Seems like the story of my life. Yeah I know boo hoo but I'm having a moment. I lived through the surgery, staying an extra day because my temp kept spiking. Went home and got pneumonia so I went back for a week to the hospital... got out only to go back in in extreme pain, come to find out I have a leak and an abscess and have to do surgery again (mind you I paid for this out of my pocket and have the rottenest. lousiest insurance plan ever). Yes these would be tears in my beer, but I CAN'T DRINK BEER anymore. Sigh....   And I'm trying to get back to working out and ppl tell me I'm messing up by doing that. I love love love the elliptical. I miss my workouts of 5 miles min a day. So I'm doing 3 every other day to build up. Mind you the revision surgery was 3/20... so this is too soon? My dr. said do what you want, you should be ok to be active, don't worry your body will tell you whenever you do too much. So it did every other day... enough time for me to recover and get back into the gym and do 3 more miles. So today I "took it easy" and only did two miles. Treadmills are boring to me..... and it's too hot in the great state of Tejas to run outside (yes, it's gorgeous right now but I would keel over and die from lack of oxygen if I ran.... THAT is a huge challenge that I KNOW I am not currently ready for).   But then I get on the scale (yeah bad idea) and I'm up a bit. Not enough to mention but just when I'm feeling like ... well since dinner that I struggled to make isn't working for me (as my belly is wringing itself out like a limp dishtowel after I took a few bites of the turkey-nitas --- yeah my own creation. I found a recipe on eggface's website that sounded delish and then in the store I remembered, my dr. says no pork until 6 months out... maybe b/c he's jewish as a friend told me that's not what her dr. said... idk but that's what my dr. said so i follow it, period). Anywho, I digress and ramble because I am having an emotional moment, sorry.... but I feel like I can't eat anything. I'm struggling with not drinking during a meal. REALLY struggling. And in eating enough ... grrrrr. Can someone send me 5 to 10 recipes of what they lived on during this frustrating phase between full liquids to mush? IDK what I'm doing. But here's my goal: NO MORE LEAKS, pray for no abscess (that crap HURTTTTTTS, or mine certainly did as it was in my diaphragm four days after my discharge from the hospital with pneumonia... hmm seems to me that the diaphragm is needed after you get out with pneumonia.... God's funny right? it's not God, forgive me lord....). Just ain't that Murphy's law? It is in my life I guess....   Ok sorry that was ramble city... but how do you "be successful" with this? I'm worried I'm "plateauing" already.   And DOES my cytomax pure protein drinks count as my water - or just to the 48 oz a day? Sigh.... so much to try to keep up on. I need help. Lord please, send me a patient angel who doesn't mind the rambling overemotional crappus that women do!   Hope all of you are being successes... and pass it forward to those that struggle. One day, dang it, that's gonna be me (gulp, I hope).

It Has Begun - With A Consult In Dubai

So I decided to start a bit of a blog here as it will hopefully track my progress along the vertical sleeve journey. I'm 42, 5 ft 3" and I live in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is my next-door-neighbour and that is where I had my first consultationwith my surgeon - a Dr Abdulsalam Al Taie. However, he will be doing the surgery in the Al Noor hospital in Abu Dhabi which is nice, as I'll be closer to home. I really liked him, he was very open to answering my zillion questions and seemed quite relaxed and confident, and very much on-the-ball. His info session was fairly comprehensive and I will have another meeting with him and a bloodwork and tests session before surgery as there is still a bit of time to go.   From here on out I am bursting the bubble- it feels real. Today according to the surgeon's uber-space-agey body composition analyser machine thingy I weigh 115 kg and have all SORTS of ghastly and worrying statistics. I think this is the highest weight I've ever been. Argh! Well thank flipping heaven this is soon to change.... starting with my own version of a pre-op diet right now.   My surgery date has been tentatively set for 2nd of July.Yay! I am so excited!   Thank-you Tamou you really were a big help holding my hand today and desertmom thanks for the laughs and encouragement.   Onwards and downwards!

Day 67 To Day 73 - On Travel

So last week I was on travel and I did pretty good. I didn't get the eat all the things that everyone else was eating, which made me a little sad. My coworkers went to famous local places like Fat Matt's Rib Shack, Glady's Chicken and Waffles, and the Flying Bisquik. I didn't go but everyone else did and said "it's the best they had ever had." Tradition southern cooking...deep fried or full of sugar...I miss food like that.   BUT...it did have fun with everyone saying how good I looked and see old friends. I also noticed that I suddenly became very interesting to many of the men there. Tee hee! I did do realy good eating too. I mainly had the breakfast that I packed (mini wheats) with soy milk and apart of a banana. For lunch, I have the dinner from the night before. For dinner I had grilled chicken with a salad, salmon with asparagus, and steak with green beans. I didn't workout because I forgot to pack my workout outfits. But my best friend and coworker found a really big mall near by which we walked for about two hours a night...stopping of course to shop. I didn't by anything because I didn't want to spend any money on something that was only going to fit for a month. For my protein shakes, I had the Nectar brand packs, which was great because they are really easy to mix and taste great!   When I got home, the first thing I did was weight myself. I was only hoping that I didn't gain anything. However, to my pleasant surprize, I drop 4.6 pounds. I am about 5 pounds away from being classified as "overweight".

Cotton Mouth And Snoring

A couple of things I have noticed that I am experiencing since surgery on March 28th.   - My mouth dries out HORRIBLY at night. I wake up and my mouth is completely dry and I can't get the saliva to moisten it up. I've been keeping a water bottle by my bed. This has never happened before. I did look it up on line and dehydration is one of the possible causes. I am going to try drinking water closer to bed time (normally I avoid because of the bathroom issue) and see if that helps. Wondering if anyone has experienced that?   - My husband stopped wearing earplugs to bed. He said since I have been back that I haven't been snoring as badly. He asked if they took out my "snoring glands" This is a happy side effect of surgery for me.

S2+B3 = Healthy Cooking - Recipe 2- Oatmeal Baked Chicken, And Mashed Sweet Potatoes.

Okay, I was going to leave you guys with just the Chicken Noodle soup dish. However, I don't want to seem unfair. So, I would like to give you guys another great recipe, and give you guys, and gals some cooking tips.     I am a very mathematical type of person. I see things as numeral equations, variables. Pretty much, I have the uncanny ability to come up with easy ways to remember things ( I am also great with taxes)   This variable I thought about, when I was teaching my then 14 year old sister how to cook. She is now 18, and graduating HS this summer...She's planning on going to Mercy College for the Pre-Vet Program.   Anyways, my sister wasn't that great in math, but she understood "The Fundamentals". I have always believed, that if one understands the fundamentals of the types of equations for which one is solving- math will seem like a piece of low-fat devils food cake. Understand that mathematics consists of 15 Percent memorization, 10 Percent freaking the hell out/ pulling hair, and 75 percent application.   s2+b3 = Healthy cooking.......... WTH is that!!!?????   Its simple. Its math.....for you and I.     Steam Stir-fry (without oil)   +   Baking Broiling Boiling   Since my mother caught a heart attack back in 2003, we decided that as a family we will eat healthier( A promise that I didn't until I became as big as a house). We stopped eating pork, and ground beef ( We knew about pink slime, before it was cool).   We resorted to cooking our meals in a much healthier way!     This should help you remember, healthy cooking methods.     Recipe 2- Oatmeal Baked chicken, and mashed yams   Prep- however it takes you to prepare. Cook- 30-50 minutes     Ingredients   2 Sweet Potatoes 1.5 cups of oatmeal 2 decent sized free ranged boneless chicken breast 1 cup of egg beaters(2 large eggs) Garlic Powder Thyme Basil Oregano Powder Romano Cheese .5 of Honey Mustard....I prefer Newmans Own. Fat Free Butter, or butter substitute   Instructions.   1. Marinade chicken with spices, cheese, and honey mustard ( You can keep the marinading for a whole day- Doesn't matter) 2. Dip marinated chicken into egg dip, covering the whole piece. 3. shake excess egg off chicken, and bread the chicken with the oatmeal. 4. Place into cookie sheet and metal pan in the oven 400 Degrees F from 25-40 minutes (4a) after chicken is finished baking, give the chicken 10 minutes so it can rest.(Probably tired)   While chicken is cooking,   5. Peel Potatoes. 6. Dice Potatoes 7. Boil Potatoes ( 30 minutes) 8. Drain Potatoes 9. MASH POTATOES ( Awesome Stress relief) 10. Add butter, or honey, or Stevia.     This dinner is fit for a couple....Very romantic! Or two friends.     Eat Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Beginning Of A New Me! One Recipe At A Time.- Recipe 1- Chicken Noodle Soup.

Hello Everyone!   My Name Is Moses (Mo for short). I am 24 Years of Age. Born and Bred New Yorker. I have always been "the fat kid", almost all my life. It didn't get out of control until my sophomore year in College. I gained 150 pounds. Now, I am 426. I have made the decision to take back my life, and pursue The Lap Band. I am not nervous, or anxious. I just realized that I need a serious life change. The same went for my dieting, and eating habits. Junk Food, processed foods, and all sorts of crazy **** have caused me to weigh this much. So, I have decided to utilize the secret weapon. Food! (Well, Natural Foods, and Exercise along with the LB Procedure). These recipes, I have used in my daily life, for myself, and my family. I will try my best to post as often as I can, but I do have a busy life. I attend Pre Med, attend school for my MPH, work, and I help out at my local masjid( Yes I am Muslim). I can commit one post a week. If you guys and gals have any concerns, or questions- or even wanna contribute: Add me as a friend, and contact me! I don't bite people, only Good food!!!!!!!     My Recipes contain:   No Pork No Beef No Shellfish No crazy mutant veggies, from space Fresh veggies Most contain no oils. Take about 30-45 minutes to cook.       Recipe 1- The best damn chicken noodle soup....EVER..   Soup is a important staple in my diet. I usually make a dozen servings, take one bowl to work, and place the rest in the freezer, so I can eat another time. Its easy to make, and incredibly delicious.   Ingredients   2 decent sized boneless free range chicken breasts- diced----- Mary's Chicken (http://www.maryschickens.com/) 1 small bag of Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Wide Egg Noodles 1 box of 36 oz chicken broth.------------ (http://www.pacificfo...s-chicken-broth) 3 additional cups of water 2 small onions, diced 2 sticks of celery, chopped 1 yellow bell pepper 1 carrot, peeled, chopped 1 small bunch of cilantro, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped Salt Pepper     Directions   1. Boil some water, and placed diced chicken into the boiling water. 2. Let the chicken boil the remaining fat off, and for the chicken to cook...Should take about 7-10 minutes, with the oven on full blast. 3. drain the water- scrape the remaining fat out of the pot. dump the veggies, broth, and 3 cups of water. 4. begin to cook.... 5. Sprinkle salt, and pepper into the batch. Cooking should take 15 minutes, or until veggies, become nice and soft.   6 boil noodles. 7. Drain noodles. 8. Place drained noodles into soup   total time 25 minutes.   Optional. Now some of you would like to have some thickness into the soup. Its fine. As you are stirring the pot, sprinkle 2tbsp of Cornstarch. Understand that Cornstarch has a ton of carbs..( COME ON!! ITS STARCH!)   Using my measurements, you can serve up to 4 with my recipe. You might want all of it to yourself.   Bon Appetit!
