4th day post-op, afraid I'm not getting enough protein or water

Recommended Posts

Sleeved on September 26, pre diet, 294, SW 279, CW 277.4

I don't know how to get enough food in and the 64 ounces of Water. Having 2 oz skim milk for Breakfast, 2 oz Protein Shake for lunch, 2 oz applesauce snack and 2 oz cream Soup for dinner. I try sipping on water all day, leaving out 30 mins before and after eating.

I've just now lost the 6 lbs of Fluid I had after surgery so I'm scared I'm not doing enough. Any suggestions?

you'll get there, you are only 4 days out. when I had applesauce I added unflavored Protein powder to it, to give me a boost, you could do the same to the cream Soup and with the milk at Breakfast.

one day soon the swelling will go down in your stomach and it's like flipping a switch, you are able to take in a little more at a time and it gets easier to meet your goals.

just try for a little more each day. and Christinamo is right, you hit a point where suddenly it is a lot easier - for me it was about 6 days post op (4th day home). I went from struggling to hit anywhere in the 40's for Fluid intake to not having any trouble getting in 64oz seemingly overnight. Don't worry about weight loss the first couple weeks. Between the swelling, the iv fluids and your body focusing on healing you may not lose much if any. At my two week post op follow up appt. I hadn't even lost a tenth of a pound. I was told not to worry and sure enough in the two weeks after that I lost 20lbs.

Oh and the 64oz doesn't have to be just Water - all liquids count - so include your skim milk, Protein shakes, even your strained cream Soup. Is there a reason why you are only doing 2oz of Protein shake? when I was on full liquids the first two weeks - I had three 8oz Protein Shakes a day equaling 24 oz of Fluid and then did Water or crystal light for the rest of my fluid.

Flavor your Water to make it easier to drink. Keep drinking Protein shakes they count as fluids

you will not stretch your new stomach,

and especially not with liquids which go through pretty quickly.

in early days the swelling means if you drink too much at a time it may come up into your esophagus. which is not pleasant or you may feel like you've just had Thanksgiving dinner. it will be different when you are eating soft foods and then foods 2-3 ounces of lean Protein will be plenty enough, if you can even manage that.

Keep sipping. I was sleeved and didn't have to leave any time between Protein shakes and other fluids. I was also able to count all my fluids toward my Fluid total, including Protein Shakes.

Just sip, sip, sip.

I sipped all day and didn't go to sleep until I hate met my goals.

It gets easier.

At 4 days it's okay to not get the recommended amount. It will get easier as your stomach heals. Try different temperatures of liquids. I couldn't drink at all the first 3 days. When I tried hot tea I was finally able to take in a bit of Fluid.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
