2.5 weeks out feeling lost- HELP!

Recommended Posts

Sleeved on 8/7 and have lost 22lbs and 30lbs overall. I am tolerating stuff and in the pureed-soft foods phase. I can't seem to keep down Vitamins so I haven't take any. E-mailed my nutritionist but apparently she has been on vacation. I would love to start working out as I have already lost enough to see my skin loose. I just don't know where I am at in the process.

Should I be trying to recover or start plotting out meals and supplements. I feel like there isn't much rhyme or reason to eating right now since I have very limited options.

The lack of viramis is got me totally drained and causing joint and muscle pain.

I def want to start working on my new self and start developing a routine but not sure how.

@Sarahmizzou call anyone from your clinic, they should be able to help. as far as being lost... you are in the best place possible.... bariatric pal forum. very impressive numbers thus far. also great drive with your motivation to want to exercise. From what I know, walking is okay, until you get a release around the 4 week mark from your PT or Surgeon. did your office not give you a solid printed plan of post-op eating on a week by week basis? what kind of Vitamins are you taking? chewables? try cutting them into smaller pieces and eating them throughout the day.?.?.?.?.?

take care, and keep up the great work

Just a thought, but have you tried liquid Vitamins? There are some really good ones out there.

I bought a chocolate Vitamin and mineral powder from GNC to add to my Protein Drinks. Works well and tastes good and I get everything I need In 3 drinks a day. You can also get atleast some Vitamins from pre made Meal Replacement drinks like ensure.

Thanks for the responses folks. Our guide is very vague "days through 13-49 pureed and soft foods like deli meat, eggs, soft cheese." I really only eat when I am hungry which is once or twice a day maybe. I tried bariatric adavantage Vitamins and they made me instantly sick. Then I tried a whole foods Vitamin Garden of Life and it did the same thing. I've been hesitant to try liquids in case the same thing happens.

The exact same thing happened to me with the Bariatric Advantage vitamins! I took them a few times before realizing that was what was causing instant nausea, and spent 20 mins laying flat hoping not to throw up! I wonder what it is about them?

Are you getting any B-12? That's a problem for RNY and VGS patients anyway, look for B-12 in drugstore but get sublingual. Just put a tiny tablet under your tongue and you'll absorb it. Also get some extra Iron, you could also be suffering from anemia. There are liquid and chewable options.

Ineresting about the Bariatric Advantage AE Vitamins making you sick, Chasingpolaris321. I am eight months out and was recently switched from chewable to the Bariatric Advantage AE's because of the extra Iron. They are stinky horse pills. I could not swallow them whole, I couldn't even swallow them cut in forths, so I started to mash them up with a mortar annd pestle and put them in blueberry applesauce to mask the taste.

I have had a couple of episodes of extreme nausea and diarrhea, and one day last week, I got so sick that I passed out twice before I could get back to bed. Both times I hit my head on the bathroom floor, and both times I was out for over an hour. When I came to, I just climbed in bed and slept for hours. The next day, my daughter convinced me to call my primary physician, and he put me in the hospital overnight to replenish fluids and take a CT scan of my noggin. I got scolded from my daughter, my doctor, and the E R doctor that I should have called an ambulance right away. Lesson learned.

Anyway, now I am wondering about those particular Vitamins. I wil ask my bariatric physician.

Hi everyone - 21 days Post Op.. I too am having issues with Vitamins.

I am starting the soft food stage ( moist fish.. watery mash potato ) but I tend to have a constant issue with Productive Burp & Foamies..

The issue is that find it difficult to swallow my Vitamins with Water - so I bought the Bari Melts in: Multi, Calcium, B -Complex & Iron. I can JUST tolerate the chewing of the Tablets & then sip Water to get it down.. but I find that EVERY time & eat the Iron pill ( its very tiny ) I get nauseous. Any feedback on the Iron / Nausea issue?

My Iron pill says not to crush or break to only take whole. Its vitron C which is what i was specifically told to get as the Vitamin C aids in absorption. Maybe crushing is making you sick...too much at once.

There is a liquid Vitamin I have taken for a year called Source of Life Liquid Gold recommended by a natural pharmacist friend (bought online on Amazon, it lasted ? 3 months - big container). I could not take the big Vitamins. Please get yourself on a Vitamin regimen. You will begin losing hair, Fact of life and I am not trying to scare you. I have done everything right and lost hair to where I chopped it all off and bought a wig. But vitamin deficiency is not good so take notes with the responses and do the best you can. There is rhyme or reason to eating and drinking and you will find out in an Emergency Room. I got dehydrated and learned the hard way, Take all the responses here and get with your NUT and surgeon and get informed. Best wishes and take good care of yourself!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the replies! I am going to try alternavites which is like a crystal form that disolves on your tongue...much cheaper than BA and I think it will help me work up to the regular pills once I am cleared by my doc. I already learned the hard way a week after surgery I was in the ER for dehydration so I pay particular attention to my Fluid intake. I think our surgeon introuduces soft foods much sooner than most( day 14) I am allowed deli meat, soft peeled fruit, ground beef, very cooke vegies....honestly nothing tasted that good anymore. I am hopeful that will change over time.

Early on you may not be hungry at all. Schedule yourself 3 meals and 2 Snacks and find a way to get them down. I found that for the first few months, Centrum chewables went down just fine and tasted like Skittles. You might try a chewy\gummie Vitamin. A typical day for me 6 weeks post op was...

1 egg for Breakfast, (if I could finish it)

Suck on Syntrax nectar Iced lemon teal all morning (1 serving of Protein supplement)

cheese stick for a snack

Chili for lunch

cheese stick in the afternoon. Maybe some more nectar too

Hearty Soup with tiny meat bits for dinner

Our surgeon said:

DO NOT eat 3 meals a day.

Do not eat unless you are really hungry.

Do not count calories, Proteins, carbs, sugar, just eat healthy.

We have done that, focusing on Proteins, until I was told I eat too much Protein 3 months post op.

I keep no bread, Pasta, Cookies, sugar, or Snacks in the house. Then again I am blessed it is just my husband and I and

we were both sleeved. Also, both of us are diabetic so that is a major reason not to keep those things from tempting

us.

Works for us!!!

Good luck and whatever works for one will not work for another, and trust your doctor.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
