Cost of vertical sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I just got this email from a local bariatric center:

"Thank you for your interest in our program. The estimated cost of the Sleeve Gasterectomy is $35,300 . This price includes all of your pre-surgical appointments, the surgeons fee, the anesthesia fee, the hospital fee, BLIS insurance (insurance coverage for 90 days following your surgery), and one year follow-up with your surgeon...."

She goes on to give me some names of places that might finance me.

Am I crazy or does this sound exceptionally high?? I was under the impression that the surgery would be under $10,000 but I can rarely get anyone to tell me how much they paid.

Could I get someone to give me some help in this??

Thanks, apples

That does seem high. I've heard anywhere from $9,500 to $25,000 for self-pay in the US. That quote seems more in line for an insurance reimbursement. You might want to check with them again to make sure they understand you are talking self-pay.

If you are willing to travel, Medical Tourism can connect you to my surgeon in Las Vegas. My quote was $10,900.00. There was some pre-op testing by my PCP that was not included, but my insurance covered that. Send me a PM if you want more information.

Mine was $11,200 with Dr. Mark Pleatman in Bloomfield Hills, MI. That included his fee, the hospital fee, anesthesia, pre-op testing, nutritionist, and two years of post-op visits.

I had insurance....BUT self pay here in Tucson at the hospital and surgeon I used is $16,000. That included the 2 night stay in the hospital, and all the visits for a year.

Does anyone know, when you self-pay in the U.S., are you still required to meet minimum requirements to qualify for the surgery? You know the BMI, co-morbidites, phsyc, pre-diet, etc...

From the research I've been doing, seems Mexico doesn't require these things.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I do not believe you will find 10K anywhere in the US, Mexico yes. And the 35K you were quoted seems inflated to say the least, and I have not seen any self pay near that amount (unless you had complications, open vs lap, bleeding, leaks etc something that made you have to stay longer)

yes it is exceptionally high - i think you should reconsider and ask for info.

i highly recommend Dr.Aceves in Mexico - his prices are not exceptionally high and he is completely reliable and professional. if you need additional info. i'll be glad to help you out. goodluck:thumbup1:

Yes, I agree! That does seem very high. I paid 12,000 for the pre-op visits, support visits, surgery and hospital stay. I would continue to search and ask more questions.

I paid 6700 in Mexico and have no complaints. I have heard simmilar stuff to others with regard to self pay in the US... between 15 and 25.

Let us know what your doc says about the inflated price? Maybe the other US self pay aren't including anestesia and appointments. Who knows.

I paid 12,900 cash plus 250 for psych evaluation and 250 consultation in Monroe, LA. I don't know what the insurance price would have been.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
