I haven't had my surgery yet but my Doc. said I might have shoulder pain for a few days after because for some reason the extra air that ends up in your stomach causes it.

I had surgery on January 4. My shoulder pain lasted for I know the first week and then I remember a couple of days the second week that my shoulder would hurt only when I laid down. I hope this helps, and I am curious to see what everyone else had!

Celia:rolleyes2:

Everyone gets it. Its trapped gas in your body from them inflating you. Gas floats up, so unfortunatly you will feel it in your upper body. It sucks bad but walking and stretching upper body helps.

Not everyone gets the gas pains in the shoulder. I was banded on Monday and have NOT had any problems with gas pains in my shoulder and very little in my tummy. My doctor was great about getting it all out of my system. But walk as much as possible. They had me up walking at the hospital a few hours after surgery. Actually I had to get up and walk every 2 hours. I know a lot of people have said Gas-X has helped them but the gas they are putting in you is just going into your tummy area and not into you intestines. So I was told NO on Gas-X.

I was banded on 1/11, and I only had the shoulder pain for about a week. I did take gas x chewables. I know they said it wouldn't help, but it made me feel better taking it just in case it would. Now I just get the weird hiccups/burps/pain when I'm done eating my Protein Shake. I can't wait until they go away.

Heck yeah. I had it bad for the first 4-5 days and then it slowly dissipated. But then on day 8 i got a bad neck/shoulder pain out of the blue and was in considerable pain until i took some liquid tylenol. It helped and it hasn't reared it's ugly head since. Maybe it was the last of the gas making it's way out. I sure hope so!

OMG, I hate those burps...the good news is...they definitely do go away.

Best wishes!

We are both exactly a week post-op today--my shoulder pain pretty much stopped two days ago. I took the Gas X, but walking, as everyone else has stated, helped the most.

Same as Misskelly - no shoulder pains for me, but was up walking/mobilising a few hours after surgery and have been pretty active with housework and kids since getting home from hospital.

Wounds healing well, but not looking forward to having stitches out next week - it's gonna hurt...........

I thought the stitches dissolved on their own? I honestly never heard anything aout stitch removal!

UPDATE ON MOI AND BOFINGER:

It's been 9 days since surgery. My shoulder pains still occur now and then but it's mostly dissipated. I do find that I go through moments of extreme hunger -- true stomach hunger and not head hunger -- and I just power through it or eat a sugar free Jello cup or something. Right now my diet is mainly: sugar free Jello and pudding, fat free yogurt, creamy or clear Soups, applesauce, V8juice, I've ordered unjury Protein powder to get more Protein in because thus far I haven't found a Protein Drink that I can stand. It tastes so awful and medicinal. Anyone have any to recommend?

NO PRE-0P DIET

PRE-OP WEIGHT: 255

BOFINGERED: JAN 12

WEIGHT LOSS TO DATE (JAN 21) 10 LBS

CURRENT WEIGHT: 245

GOAL WEIGHT: 160

I am normally a very slow loser due to being on high doses of prednisone and lack of ability to exercise, and I do realize this has gotta be mostly Water weight. But what the heck, the scale moved down ten lbs and I'm happy. Anyone know if most peeps do gain when they go on "real" food?:)

Oh my! I never thought about stitches. I guess that I am glued together. Isn't funny how doctors performing the same procedure do things so totally different. Anyway, my places are healing nicely although I do have some skin irritation on one, I guess from the tape, but it is not on the other 4.

As far as Protein drinks, the only thing that I found that I could remotely stand is Isopure. It is okay, but still not wonderful. Someone should really make something that taste good, or atleast less medicinal!

Congrats on getting the ten pounds off... just ease into food.. (easy for me to say.. my surgery is Tuesday - wow that sounds good:)

I found the pool is good for the joints... my athritis and lupus kicks my butt but I want to move.. and.. get the shape ups... I have lost ten pounds preop and I have not dieted persay... but I have been wearing my Skechers Shape Ups shoes.. I will always have those .. will officially trade them in for regular shoes... they make you walk different... I think that is where my 10 pounds went...

Congrats on the initial loss.. keep it up...

Jen

I haven't had surgery yet I have it on Monday but I have already started to drink protein drinks. I like the Alpine Punch Isopure drinks its 40g of protein in one bottle and 160 calories which isn't bad for the amount of protein u get. I want to try their other flavors they have like pineapple orange, blueberry, and grape. Good luck finding one that fits.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
