Worried they filled me too much

Recommended Posts

I had surgery May 18 and had my first fill today. Floroscopy was used, so they filled while I drank barium. I am worried they gave me too much because I am not feeling that great right now. While filling me, they asked me to tell me when my chest started to hurt. It still hadn't started to hurt at 8cc, so they filled me with another cc up to 9cc (out of a 12cc band) at which point I could fill a slight pinch, but nothing too bad. I thought this was too much for a first fill, but the tech said that because I was younger (29) and pear shaped rather than apple shaped, I did not have as much intra-abdominal fat (which will provide some restriction), so I needed to be filled more. We watched the barium go through the band on the floroscopy screen and so the tech said it was good to go.

I left the hospital and within a half hour or so, my chest did start to hurt. I'm back at home now, it is about 6 hours later and I still kinda have achy chest pain. I have had some sips of Water and juice, but I don't want anything else cause I am not feeling very good.

It just seems like 9cc is a huge amount to get in one fill! Anybody else use floroscopy and so get a big fill? THx!

Wow, that is a huge fill! Hopefully since they did it under fluoroscopy it will be fine--mine aren't done that way, so I don't really have advice, sorry. At least you're able to get liquids down! After fills, my doctor advises 24 hours of liquids, to 24 hours of mushies, then to a normal diet. Just pay close attention to how you are feeling and what you can get down, or if you have any pain or discomfort (personally, I usually wait a day on this since I can be a bit of a baby). 9cc seems huge to me, but it's really more about what your body can handle. If you can follow your doctor's rules and not have problems, you're probably fine. Good luck!

I had a fill on Tuesday and since then I can't hold anything down but liquids. I can eat a small salad but no Protein what so ever. Do you think I am too tight or do I need to give it time. The problem is I get very uncomfortable when I eat protein and can't stand that feeling and will make myself get sick to get that feeling to go away. When will that feeling go away. I am only 3cc in a 10cc band. Could there be an underlying problem like a slip?

I just went through what you are going through right now. I also have a 10 cc band with 3cc's of restriction. It sounded like not much of a fill, I thought. But I had problems too. So I called the doctor. He had to take .75 cc out of my band. Within days I felt a lot better and was able to eat most foods. My doctor has me do liquids only for 5 days after my fills. Then I can have soft foods for 3 days (mashed potatoes, pudding, scrambled eggs, etc.). After following those rules, then we are allowed to go onto solid foods. So since you only had your fill a few days ago you might be pushing it trying to eat already. If you are still having problems call your doc cos the 4th of July weekend is coming up and lots of docs will be on vacation. Good luck. Let me know what happens.

9cc is a lot of fill, especially for the first fill. I did note that you say you have a "12 cc band". I think bands come in 9, 10 and 14ccs. But, regardless...If you can swallow liquid today, and can eat mushy food tomorrow, you are probably okay. I am sure that such an aggressive fill would make you feel weird!! I'm at 6ccs in a 10cc band and I'm at my sweet spot and my last fill (.6cc) did leave me feeling a little "off" for abouat 24 hours.

That note that you are coming up on a holiday weekend and going to an emergency room is a crap shoot at best as it is likely that you would not be dealing with someone experienced with lapbands. That being the case, if you are not feeling better tomorrow, CALL THE DOCTOR and go in for an unfill.

Does sound like a very aggressive fill. But I have a question. Were you very nervous before your fill? I was and after I had left I started hurting very badly. It had to do with nerves since I really didn't know what to expect. Make sure you do only liquids today. If your not better tomorrow call the dr. then and see about a slight unfill. Keep us posted.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
