Is vomiting really that bad???

Recommended Posts

Hello, everyone! I had my 3rd fill in March and Wow! I finally got what I wished for. I dont think I'm too tight or have too much restriction, but I cant help still eating at the same speed and still taking big bites. I've lost 66 lbs since October and continue to lose slowly, but steadily. Im not looking for sympathy or judgement. Here is my question:

Because I eat too fast and dont chew my food into mush or take small bites, I tend to throw up. So, is it really THAT bad to throw up and what can it do to me after a long period of time?

Yes it can be bad...you can cause a slip, erosion, and other issues. You need to make sure you slow down, chew, chew, chew, and chew some more. I was warned by the doctor and nutritionist about this.

I can't speak from any personal expertise, but everything I've read says that throwing up too much can mess things up pretty bad, as Shay said. Up to needing another surgery to fix things.

I made it a personal goal not to throw up, but I failed that mission today. I don't know your experience, but I think that chewing food and monitoring bite size is far superior to the discomfort I felt today.

Not only can you cause your band to slip, but vomiting on a regular basis can cause all types of issues with your stomach and erosion of your upper GI and throat. Slow chewing and small bites also helps us get our Protein and take full advantage of it with our bodies. I would suggest you change your lifestyle and bit and follow the rules which will be all for the good.

i think that i have the same problem that you do. i tend to eat too fast and throw up fairly often. i'm pretty sure that it's because that i finally have restriction and i'm not using it to my advantage. this has been going on for a couple months, but it's slowly getting better.

i went and bought myself toddler sliverware to remind myself to eat smaller. i've also been told to sit a nickle next to you while you eat to remind yourself small bites. i haven't thrown up in 2 days so it's helping! i don't think that i have any slippage yet as i don't have any of the symptoms so i'm finally getting back on track and using my restriction...i hope that you can too! :)

Hi, I had a similar issue. I did sometimes (a few times a week) have something stuck and throw it up,. Then, I became ill which caused me to throw up everyday for almost 2 weeks. Because i could take liquids and my meds, they wanted to find a solution before unfilling the band or surgery. My stomach pouch was filling with Fluid and I would be throwing up after a bite or 2. My stomach and port were sore. My next fill was under X-RAY ( whatever it is they use to see inside) to be sure everything was OK. I had to slowly reintroduce solid foods. If it had continued, they would have unfilled the band. I still occasionally get something stuck and throw up, but am much more careful. I did not have any slippage. But throwing up for that long, I can see where it would happen. It was no picnic even with no long term damage.

I did not have the stomach flu (merely a sinus infection with lots of drainage). Something that really makes one vomit, like stomach flu would be NO fun at all.

My suggesting would be to just focus on chewing. If you chew very very well, you can't take any more bites (since you are chewing) and if the bite is too big it really doesn't matter since you are chewing the shit out of it.

I still take large bites but I chew like a crazy woman.

I was banded 2/14 and have never thrown up.

YES it REALLY IS THAT BAD! LIKE THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THIS BAND AND WANT IT TO WORK!

You may not have paid for it, but you went to a lot of trouble to get it, so why would you even think it would be okay to puke on a regular basis when all the docs say don't throw up if you can help it. Everyone tells you that you are to eat smalll bites and eat slowly, so I have to reason to believe you will listen to this, but you did ask the question.

You can force yourself to eat slow. Put your fork or spoon down between each bite.

What will happen if you keep throwing up is your stomach will get so inflammed you won't be able to keep anything down, then one or two things will happen1.You will go into soft food syndrom and possibly even gain weight 2. YOu will puke so much you loose your band due to a slip.

I hope you reconsider your approach to the band. It is only a tool to help you feel more full and eat less. Yoou have to do some work.

I hope you can make some changes, not trying to be judgemental, but that is the way it is, like it or not.

Corliss

I think it is a learning process. I threw up a lot after this last fill and then I got the hang of when I was full and when I should stop. I always chew chew chew but it happens sometimes until you get used to it.

There's a difference between vomiting and bringing food back up when you have the band. I don't think it's considered vomiting when you bring food back up that hasn't even reached your stomach yet. I can easily bring food up for as long as 45 minutes after I eat that is sitting in my esophagus waiting to go through the band. It's the convulsions and spasms that come with true vomiting that are bad for the band.

I was wondering if the food was just stuck in chest if that was calling vomiting. Thanks for the info

Bringing food back up before it reaches the stomach is what your Dr. is telling you to avoid as well. It most definitely causes problems or can.

JMS is correct. Neither are good for you. And both can cause serious problems with the band if not stopped.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
