Lap-band is amazing! 2 years almost Post-op 170 lbs down

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry I don't have a before picture, will put one on later. In the current picture, I'm the one in the purple. I just wanted to say for anyone feeling that it isn't working; it will trust me. I live in Chicago,IL and found a surgeon in Detroit that would do it for about $7,000 less than Illinois. That was a hassle going back and forth to Detroit for fills. I had a program that said that I would get fills for free for one year. So stupidly I went back and forth to Detroit for about 5 months after surgery to get fills. I finally found a fill doctor in Chicago that was only $80 per fill. So now it's been almost two years and I am down 170 lbs. I started at a size 30/32 and I am not a size 6/8. Never in my life did I ever think that I would be skinny!! I am so happy.

So for those who are having plateau's, you will get past that. I had many many plateau's and everything is great now!

I do have some pb's every now and then and some air bubbles that seem like they will never go away but it is a learning process. Just work with your doctor, let them know EVERYTHING!! If you don't tell them something, they may misdiagnose you and you'll have more problems. Get on the forums, they help. Even though this surgery has been around a while, it still has some surprising things that you may have never heard of. All I know is that through all of the frustration and then not being able to eat even though I soooooooo wanted to, it's worth it. To be able to go into a "normal" store and put on something knowing that it will fit, That is the best feeling in the world to me! I am finally...... "normal". :-)

Congrats! This makes me feel inspired again! My surgery is tomorrow, May 8, 2009. I'm starting at 324 and have high hopes of achieving the same kind of success that you have. I began reading about the pb's that some have had because they're diabetic and have PCOS like me, and I began doubting that I can do it. I'm so glad I just stumbled across your post. Do you have any tips?

My surgery with Dr. Webber is on May 27th. I'm excited but I'm also getting scared. Everyone that knows I'm having the procedure is against it. They all know someone who knows someone who died from it. It's starting to freak me out. Did you get any stats from Dr. Webber about mortality rates? There are three distinct outcomes per the internet (or so it seems)... it works perfectly, there are minor problems due to "user error", or you die.

I've tried everything under the sun to lose weight and this is kind of my last hope. Thoughts?

...very nervous...

Hey Christa, I think what she was saying is that the cost of the surgery in Detroit was $7,000 cheaper than it would have been in Illinois, not that the overall cost was $7,000. But anyway, her surgeon Dr. Webber is the same as mine and he currently charges $10,700 for the surgery. There is also a Dr. in Denver that does it for $9,900 I think.

The Dr. in Denver is super! I live here in Colorado and his name is Dr. Kirshenbaum. That is correct on the cost of surgery and he is so awesome!! I had surgery Jan. 9th and have lost almost 100 pounds. I had lost my 100 and then went on a cruise- that is ok though! it is going to come off:):scared2::) Feel free to let me know if you need any info on Dr. K:)

Congrats on the terrific weight loss. I was banded Oct. 2007 and lost 115#. I was pretty much at goal then had to get an unfill due to daily vomiting and not keeping anything down. I gained 14# in 4 weeks! Had a fill and I do not feel much restriction. I was told to only eat a 1/2 cup of food and that is not happening! The Nurse Prac. who does the fills wants me to keep a food journal and I have not been good! How do I get back on track. It was easier before when I could barely eat! Maybe I need another fill! I do not know what normal is anymore. What do you eat for your meals? I am exercising more and that does help. How can I be better? I feel like a failure already! Thanks for your advice! Suzanne G.

What caught me most about your post was your photo. Your friends are beautiful - but looking at the group as a whole...them in black, hunched, squished, etc.....and then you - bright purple, upright, proud....

this picture is worth a million words!

Congrats on your success.

Drs. Brown and Metz in Denver also do self-pay for $9900. Very easy to get an appointment with them, and very good nutrition info.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
