Have you heard of the MidBand?

Recommended Posts

I went for my consult today, and the doctor said he uses a band called MidBand instead of LapBand or Realize Band. He said he's had better results with the MB. Have any of you been banded with it or have heard of it before?

Hi Babe,

I could be getting old, but i swore I saw someone else asked this questions a few months ago.

If no one responds to the thread, you might want to try doing a search for midband.

It's the French band. The company claims they have the best band, fewest complications, blah blah blah. However, J&J makes the same claim yet they are having to tweak their own band due to issues.

I don't know of any disinterested 3rd party studies to defend any manufacturers claims but if I were to get another band, and I would not, it would likely be the Midband.

It is not hard like the Inamed or J&J bands, it feels more like soft rubber. It "looks" like it makes more sense than the rock hard bands. I don't have studies on long term results with the Midband.

Hi Babe :blushing:

BubbleButt is correct. It's called the French Midband and it is a little different in it's dwsign from the other bands. All Dr's seem to think the one they use is the 'best' one, and like everything else I would assume it is a personal preference on their part.

If you make it to the meeting tomorrow night be sure to ask Doreen about it, she has a Fr. Midband.

If you are in the US you will likely have a lot of difficulty finding anyone to do fills for a Midband so watch out for that.

I am new here and doing research. I had an ankle transplant last year and struggle with physical activity although I love it. I have put on 40 lbs in a year and was already over weight. My BMI is over 35 and I was wondering if a surgical procedure would be right for me. I am fighting horrible depression due to the pain of the ankle but largely from the obesity. I would encourage any advice. Is this going to possibly give me more problems? Would it be more positive for my future than negative or vis a versa? I don't know what to do. My doc's have all said they would support me getting this and the records indicate the insurance will pay but after having so many problems with my ankle for the past 12 years, I am afraid I might be causing myself more problems. Is this taking the easy way out? Please help.

I had a broken foot, ankle and toes 5 years ago that had to be put back together with pins and needles. My doc did not think I would be able to walk after the severity of the break, even with multiple surgeries. I was lucky, and had a phenomenal surgeon that exceeded any expectations I could have hoped for. Even on a consult with another foot surgeon a year later for an unrelated issue, that surgeon could not believe the awesome work that was done on my foot. Even so, I still have some nerve damage in my foot and the pain is on and off. I have now lost 80 pounds and the pain in my foot is significantly less, at least partially due to the weight loss. Lap-Band surgery is definitely something to consider, and may help your ankle pain in the future as you lose weight.

The OP lives in Vancouver. ;o)

They apparently have more options than we do in the US.

Nobody can predict what kinds of problems you might or might not have with banding. You have to look at stats NOT done by band doctors or those who manufacture bands. They all want to look like they are the best of the best and finding studies and stats such as those are difficult at best.

There are pros and cons to every single WLS type out there. Personally, I can't honestly say a band is a best option for most. It's the procedure with the lowest weight loss and requires the most effort. There are quite a few places that aren't doing it anymore. Some doctors in the US, a Swedish hospital, the country of Chile will stop doing bands completely, they are going to sleeves and bypass only.

According to info posted by Dr. Curry on OH bands show about a 50-60% loss of excess weight. That just isn't enough in my eyes. Better than nothing but with all the work, effort, and surgery it should be better.

Now, that's not to say you can't beat the stats with the band, you can. But there are just too many potential complications with a band. You really have to look at your eating habits, your life style, the works when deciding which procedure is best for you.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
