Odd Side Effects?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 11-25-2008 and since then have recovered really well. I have followed the doctors orders about eating and walking, and have lost 10 pounds so far. However I have been experiencing some odd effects and was wondering if it is from the surgery or something else.

For instance I'm now always cold, I need extra blankets at night to stop the shivering. I need to bundle up more before venturing outside. I realize this all could be a coincedence since it is Nov/Dec in Michigan, but I never suffered through the cold like I do now.

Secondly I wake up after about 4 hours of sleep and can't go back to sleep. At this point I'm ready to begin my day, however it's only 2 or 3 in the morning. There isn't anything to do at this time and I don't want to risk waking anyone else. I admit that since losing a total of 22 pounds since the start of pre-op diet, my quality of sleep has improved, and the cpap machine seems to be working better. Anyway I would be interested to hear if anyone else is experiencing simular or other effects.

Hey there. The cold seems to be bothering me as well. I realize that it is cold outside and all, but this is the coldest I have ever been. I had my surgery in mid-may of this year, and have lost almost sixty lbs. My doc said that losing a lot of weight will make you become more cold during the winter (obvious I know), but I just wanted to let you know that I have had some of those same symptoms.

I was having the same problems at night - waking up after 4 hours and be wide awake. I started taking the costco brand - Kirkland PM pills and those have helped alot. I'm cold too but it's only been 30 degrees out so that to me is normal.

Hi Glentk,

In relation to your shivers, it's probably a mild case of anemia (which is an Iron deficiency). I have bouts with anemia and the way I know I'm low on Iron is when I have a chill I can't shake, so ask your doctor or nutritionist about an iron supplement that might help.

Just a suggestion, hope it helps..

Nat

I am cold too. And I live in sunny California. I am sleeping with blankets and with socks on my feet. I have never done that before. Plus, I am blasting the heater up to 80, because I feel cold around the house.

Even at work in my office it feels cols, so I am wearing a sweater.

I too experienced some odd symptoms after my banding. For one thing I was hot one second, then freezing the next. I then have had issues sleeping since. I finally bought melatonin last night and that seemed to help. I am sure there are many of us experiencing the same issues.

Hope yours gets better.:cursing:

I live in Sunny South Florida, and was banded on 11-11-08. I am also sleeping with socks and extra blankets. Not sure why. I see you are still using your cpap machine. I was told by my Dr DO NOT use the cpap after surgery anymore because it fills the stomach up with gas. Just curious what your doc told you. They are all different. Good luck to you.

Me too! I was banded on 11-25-08 and my entire thermostat seems off. I'm either freezing or burning up so your not alone. hopefully it will pass as our bodies adjust.

These side effects post surgery could be anesthesia related too. Give it time and I am sure your body will adjust.

It has something to do with the weight loss. I was told that eventually our bodies will adjust, but until then we will be colder than usual.

Well I'm 3 yrs out and just had my thyroid removed so I may not be the best one to tell you that it regulates itself. I am cold alot I have a blanket on most all the time.

As far as sleeping and waking up goes. I have more energy so I do wake up earlier. I just lost my job, but I plan on continuing to get up early and ride my stationary bike or do wii fit. I have also heard that exercising even for 20 minutes late in the day helpd with sleeping.

Don't feel bad about not being 100%. It took me about 3 weeks before I felt "normal". Even now I get the odd twinge or ache around my port. Give yourself time.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
