I am worried my insurance wont cover it

Recommended Posts

:sad:I am 32 yr old woman with 3 little boys. I have struggled with weight gain forever. I want this so bad because I have tried everything else with little results. I am worried because I don't quite reach the 40 bmi

I am 63inches tall @214. about 37 bmi I don't know what to expect at the doc's office. I feel like it is gonna be so humiliating! Any advise?:cursing:

There is no reason why your visit with the doctor should be humiliating, they deal with people that have weight issues all the time. They will weigh you and discuss the surgery and your options.

As far as insurance covering it. If their guidlines say you must be a 40 BMI then there is a good chance that a 37 will not qualify. Most insurance companies that do cover bariatric surgery require a BMI of 40+ or a BMI of 35-40 with weigh related health conditions. Do you have any health issues that could qualify you?

What I did was tell the dr. that you will gain the weight and if you don't you will self-pay. That way you can do everything necessary to get a surgery date - psych test etc. without having to wait.

call your insurance company or your HR dept and get a copy of your policy.

find out if it:

a- actually covers weight loss surgery

b- if they do cover WLS what are the requirements (bmi / 6 month diet / comorbidities / etc)

c- seek out a surgeon that covers your insurance (pending it does)

my insurance does cover WLS, but i did not meet their criteria in having a BMI of 36 w/no comorbities. that's information you want to deal with up front, rather than play a waiting game only to be denied.

good luck to you!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
