Apprehensive...No Spicy Foods???

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone:

On 1 Dec. I have an appointment to finalize the date for my labpand surgery. I am very apprehensive about all of this. There is no doubt that I need to do something. I am 100 lbs over weight. In the last 2 years I lost 60 pounds only to gain most of it back.

I think to myself, I can do this on my own, but clearly I can not. I want to be around for my wife, kids, and grandchildren for many years to come. AT 100 pounds overwieght, I know I will not be.

I am worried about what will happen after the surgery and when I am back on "real" food. The worry is that I was raised and eat spicy foods. Being of Mexican and East Indian descent, curry and chiles are part of my every day life. What are peoples experiences with spicy foods post surgery.

I know, if it means a long life I will give up these foods...But I am already giving up coffee and diet Pepsi.....what else I am going to be doing without!!!!!!!????

Thank you for listening to me.......

The reasons you stated are the reasons I was banded.. I have lost 110 lbs - I feel 10 yrs younger have tons more energy..

I live in So Cali where Mexican food is the food of choice :)

I still eat chilli - salsa - I cook with jalapeno's - I can't say I eat super hot but I do pretty good for a white chick since I have grown up hear and mexican food is what I grew up on..

I have read were some pple can't tolerate spicy food - but for me I can still eat it - my doc didn't say I couldn't...

Heck I still drink coffee - there are pple here who's doc's dont allow it...

As you will find out the longer you are on this board that every doc has diff instructions...

Good luck on your journey.. Heck 100 lbs for a guy is a walk in the park - go to the guys room - they lose that in like 6 months :) - You men seem to lose it fast than us girls :cool2:

Thank you for your reply....I know Indio very well. I grew up South of you in the Imperial Valley.

I will just see how it goes with the spicy foods..... I know I will have to give up somethings, but this process is very difficult to comprehend when all I can think about right now is what I have to give up.

My DIL is from Brawley and my xdh family was from Imperial  (Estrada's) So I know your area too... Good mexican restaurant in El Centro Lexie or something like that it's an old house converted into a restaurant...

You don't have to give up anything really - this isn't a diet but a new way of eating - it's a lifetime lifestyle change..

I still eat tacos, Beans, enchillada etc just not every day and not in the quanity that I use to.

I eat healthy 98% of the time - 2% for treats which for me includes eating out - I use to eat 6 tacos over the course of an evening filled with cheese, dripping in grease (pork fat ruled in my bood) bean w/lard... - Now I eat maybe 1 - with some Beans (no more lard) and I will just heat the tortilla on the stove instead of frying - sometime I fry - but I don't eat them as often as I use to..

I eat low fat - limited sugar and carb - I eat more veggie and I now got to the gym 3-4 times a week - before I was a couch potato...

Giving up our best friend food can be daunting - but really we can still eat and enjoy our foods - just not like what we use to do - heck that's what got us fat in the 1st place...

My sis bday - so it's a good day.. Yep the band makes the hard job of losing weight a little easier - Making you physically full on a smaller amount of food once you get proper restriction - Warning it doesn't take away your mental hunger - That's still going to be an issue... IMHO the band does 25% of the work the other 75% is up to you - as you are the one who will be making your food choices - you will be the one exercising.

It's very doable - as I have NEVER EVER GOTTEN to goal before... I'm 5'4 138 - I am happy..

Prayers for a safe surgery and speedy recovery... Janet

Thank you for all the replies. It is good to know that my spicey foods might be tolerated.

One thing I realized I have been doing is dwelling on those things I am suppose to give up and forgetting the benefits I will get out of doing this.

I look forward to living a long healthy life with my family.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
