Just Diagnosed with Protein Deficiency

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been banded for 1yr 8mos. I am very happy with the band. I had been having vague, wierd symptoms for quite some time, my PCP ordered some tests. I am apparently severely Protein deficient... oopppssss, I guess I am not the greatest bandster. I never really pay that much attention to how much Protein I eat, I assumed I was getting enough eating three meals a day. So now I have to take some prescription protein supplement three times a day. Has anyone else dealt with this? Once it got better did you have to continue on the supplements. Any advice would be appreciated!

In case you are wondering, the symptoms I have are extreme fatigue, lack of energy and interest, getting lightheaded and dizzy when I bend down or get up too quickly, low blood pressure, night sweats, headache, irriability, poor concentration, craving sweets constantly:eek::biggrin::eek::mellow:

sounds like Iron deficiency too

I dont pay any attention to Protein, but I was fine last time I had bloods done.

I eat more than an average bandster though, I always have been able to lose on 1500 calories a day or so and of course I do eat Protein from natural sources, its just not my focus. I guess you're much more likely to become deficient in anything if you're eating less, like under 1000 calories a day.

No Melissa,

Sorry to hear about your Protein deficiency. I am not as far out as you so I haven't had to deal with this. Although I do drink 2 Protein shakes everyday, well almost at least one a day. So I am getting 60 grams of Protein just in the shakes a day plus whatever I eat. Well the good news is now you know and should be able to bounce back and be more consious of your protein intake. Good Luck to you. I cannot see any reason why this problem cannot be corrected, being a nurse I know many people that become protein deficient and take supplements. The problem lies when people cannot absorb the protein in their system. But hopefully you are not dealing with a malabsorption issue

Our doc has stressed we're to get AT LEAST 60 gms of Protein a day and now from your symptoms I guess it really is important. Thanks for posting; I knew protein was important but am so used to not having to worry about it (preband) that I've been lax making sure I get enough. I hope you feel better soon and I'm glad you shared so slackers like me can pay better attention!

What are the supplements they give you? Are they pills or shakes?

Thanks for all of your support ! I guess our MDs are not beating the Protein drum for the fun of it.

I really am not sure about the supplements, I believe it is just liquid Protein. Unfortunately, my MD did not call me, my least favorite person in the office did, who could not give me ANY information. I looked up what she told me he had ordered and at this point, I am not even sure it requires a script.- Pro Stat

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
