Who started weight around 220?

Recommended Posts

I am 28 and about 5'5, weighing 217...I have always been athletic and muscular...still am at this weight. But I'm wondering who has been in this similar situation with weight, and what kind of results you've had.

I do work out 4-5 days a week, and I am hoping this will prevent any loose skin...My weight is distributed pretty evenly all over...I really dont gain in one particular area. I am hoping to lose 90 pounds and be around 130.

I would love to hear peoples story

I had my consult at 229--I'm just under 5' 7"--and surgery morning I was 225. I have also always been a strongly built girl, so I was able to carry a lot more extra weight than most of my peers.... but not *that* much extra. It was definitely time to do something.

My muscles (the ones I had in high school!) are coming back! I haven't lost enough to know about loose skin, but I didn't have a ton of fat in my belly area. It was pretty much equal opportunity in distribution. :-P

Anyway, those are my two cents; best of luck to you as you start your journey. Come back with any questions! Let us know how it goes...

I started at 212 (pre op weight) and was banded on Aug 4th. Today I was at 185 and the skin isn't loose yet. I too have always been stout and athletic. I don't work out that often, though when I did I didn't loose inches or weight either. So I figured my intake was my devil, hence the surgery. Even though I am a lot shorter I think the 130s or 120s will be a healthy spot for me.

Good luck!

Hi Shauna!

We are the same age and height and in the same weight range. When I started looking into the lapband I was 225-230 and feeling really uncomfortable. I kept slowly gaining weight b/c I was scared I would not be approved. So my surgery day weight was 240. I am now at 209 and I am happy and the weight seems to be coming off slowly but surely. I was like you athletic and muscular also. As soon as I stopped really working out, all of the muscle turned to fat and I blew up like a balloon. If you are an excerciser to begin with you will do great with the band since it helps you control your food intake. Those are the 2 keys to weight loss so you will do fine. For a while I had stopped exercising b/c it just wasn't doing anything for me. Now that I have the band I can excercise again and actually see results, it's nice!

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help you!

I started out at 218.9. I had my surgery on 9/12 and am down 14.1lbs. I am 5'5 and also carry my weight evenly as well. After 3 babies and 15 years of struggling, I decided to make a change in my life. I am looking forward to no longer being in the 200's!

Onederland here we come! Good luck to all!

At 5ft 10 I was about 245, bmi of 36ish.

But I am not strongly built/muscular really, I'm more of the tall and willowy type, so even though my bmi is now 22, I could easily lose more weight and look OK. Well, not easily, my body seems to want to stay here, lol. But I could be another 15lb lighter and look fine.

However, I've gotten to here without major loose skin. My boobs are wrecked, that's the worst of it. My stomach is OK, considering I'm 41, have had 3 babies and a 100lb weight loss. Its flat and definitely bareable in public. But it is a little loose, I could have probably a mini Tummy Tuck and a mons lift probably wouldnt go astray either. I dont want to though, way too severe, expensive and painful for the problem I have. I will get my boobs done though, those are a lot more important to me.

I think plastic surgery isnt inevitable but i really dont think anyone will lose all their weight and not be a bit loose and flabby somewhere on their body. Its just the way it is, and its better than being huge.

I exercised all the way through too and I really do think it helped, at least I'm toned.

That's great that you lost that much weight and have no loose skin. I am a "solid" person now, and still muscular and I dont think I will have much of a problem...maybe at the bottom of my stomach where I have a few stretch marks from my pregnancy. But if thats the worse I can deal with it! I had a boob job at 21 and I hoping mine will lift back in place when I lose the weight and weight train....it happened to a friend of mine. I would get another one now if I didnt want anymore kids, but I am going to wait until after my last kid to get them done again. I am excited about the future and see a light!

I want to stay in touch with everyone and see your progress!!!:smile2:

I started at 220 lbs. My first year I dropped slowly to 170 lbs. I went over a year without losing any weight. Right after my 2nd anniversary I dropped to 145 lbs. I must have had a really large plateau to get over.

I am 5'6" and set my goal at 155. That's the highest for my height. 130 sounds it would be good for you if you had been that size before. For me, I just couldn't set the bar that high for myself. My goal is a healthy BMI and once I get there, I'm going to play around with personal goals (that's actually my surgeons), but I will just look at trouble areas and work them out. How is your journey going by the way?

I'm 5'4 and weighed 239 when I started this journey, and 225 on the day of surgery. It's taken me a while to "get my groove" and from May-Sept I stayed the exact same wieght! I was lying to myself, and eating the wrong foods. I had good restriction, and couldn't eat very much, but I was eating junk! I had been a little down during that time and when you're depressed and not caring about yourself, you no longer care about what you put in your body. In September, I started a mild anti-depressent, and about two weeks later, without me even realizing it, my whole attitude changed. I'm not sure if its the medication, or if I just "woke-up." Since September, I've lost approx 18 more pounds and counting! Woo Hoo, back on track! I'm also a vegetarian with an extremely low metabolic rate - so for me to lose, I need to consume a maximum of 1,000 calories a day, or my weight will not budge. It's difficult, but I've learned nothing is beyond me! Anytime you have "head" hunger, or are struggling, go on LBT and read everyone's experiences. It motivates me everytime. :Dancing_sorry:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
