Diet Pepsi!!!

Recommended Posts

Fellas.......I am 7 weeks post op and fealing great. My comments and question is this: I was a big diet Pepsi drinker prior to surgery, love the stuff. Since getting banded I haven't even so much as sniffed one because I want to be a good boy and follow the docs orders. However......a diet Pepsi at the end of the day sure would be a nice no calorie treat. Have any of you guys tried carbinated drinks since getting banded and if so how did it affect you?

I do wonder though, when one has the stomach flu the doctors will tell you that you can have flat 7-UP. So, what if you let the soda go flat for a little while. I know, I know, the fizz is the reason we drink it, but if you just like the "flavor" of Pepsi or Coke, then I just wonder.......

The problem is the carbonation AND the sugar / calories.

I would imagine flat ginger ale when you are sick would be fine, but I wouldn't drink pop otherwise.

I didn't realize I would have to give up soda forever . I thought I would be able to have some from time to time a few months after the surgery. Oh well! It's a small price to pay for loosing weight and becoming healthy.

Ice tea (with splenda) here I come!

DW eats yogurt with aspartame and has no ill effects. Occasionally I will accidently eat one of her yogurt cups, and it invariably produces stuffiness and a headache within an hour.

jack - this line caught my eye. Of the three sugar free sweetners, Splenda is my favorite. I've read the disadvantages on all three and just figured it's still better than having sugar (sorry, can't drink my coffe {decaf, of course} without a sweetner). But that comment about stuffiness interested me. I've been dealing with it the past couple of weeks, but always attributed it to allergies. Now, I'm wondering if there is another cause.

I haven't been banded yet, but this was a great discussion. I, too, will have a difficult time after being banded with my diet lime cokes, but I think this will definitely be a small price to pay to become healthy.

I wish you well.

My doc said the following:

You CAN drink carbonated diet drinks, diet pepsi, coke, generic..ETC. He also said, if you get any discomfort, let them sit for 15 mins, try it then. If you still are getting discomfort, let them set for 30 mins. Try again, if you are still getting discomfort go for a full hour. If you STILL have discomfort...break out the unsweet tea, crystal lite, etc.. and forget about carbonation. LOL

As of now, I am an avid diet cola drinker, no probs with it with my band!! I grew up with the stuff, I would be lost without it! yay!! Just be careful, and of course, do what YOUR doc says, just letting you know what mine says!

When I feel like I need a soda, I go to 7-11 and get a small slurpee. I think and hope it does not have as much carbonation like a can of soda.

nemesis's doc's comments seem completely reasonable to me. Since the feeling of satiety comes from the stretching of the pouch, it wouldn't be unreasonable to believe that there could be some benefit to it.

If I were a soft drink addict, I'd shake up the drink before I drank, get rid of a good bit of the fizz, then have half a can or bottle or whatever.

Then again, I'm not a soft drink addict, so...

I know what you mean, I am hooked on diet coke myself! Try it and see how you do. Small sips after a few minutes to let some of the carbonation leave it might work better. If you can drink it without the pain of trapped carbonation, hey more power to you!! If you can stand to drink it flat, hey problem solved. Otherwise small sips help it go down and you can burp it up afterwards. Probably best done alone at home! Good luck!

I would love to try stevia. I've heard lots of good things about it, but I've never found it anywhere for a reasonable cost.

I think we got it at Kroger. The cost is what it is. It has to do with the process of getting into usable form but it's well worth it!

stopped drinking diet pepsi 2 weeks pre-op, I've been DietPepsi Sober for over 6 months!

I had a sip of 7up, 4months ago, hated it.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
