Who uses fibre chews/powder?

Recommended Posts

After getting the band and you eat smaller amounts (first eating the protien, fruits and veggies).....other than a multi Vitamin do you take any fibre supplements? I've seen various forms, from chews/tablets and powders. Who takes anything, what do you take and does it help keep you "regular"?

I use Benefiber that has the Calcium in it right in my crystal light daily. I can't even taste it. My dietitian recommended it.

I've been taking Fiber Choice (weight management) sugar free strawberry. Easy to chew not a bad taste. The weight management part is Chromium and green tea.

Hi,

I haven't been banded yet but I do take fiber supplements because my PCP advised me to start taking them. He says that the extra fiber is not so much for regularity but for helping to remove cholesterol from my body. Sometimes I take Fiber Choice plus Calcium but the tablets are huge! Two large tablets provide 4 grams of fiber and 500 mg calcium. Since I have finally started taking calcium pills and Vitamins on a regular basis I switched to taking Benefiber powder. It's completely taste-free and I can drink it with only a small amount of Water or put in in my Crystal Light or coffee. You can even put it in food if you like. Two teapspoons provide 3 grams fiber. I take it 2-3 times during the day instead of taking a whole lot at once. Metamucil does OK but you have to drink a lot of liquid with it and it is rather thick. Hope this helps! Lisa :o

It's really best that you get your Protein (60-90 grams per day) and fiber (35-40 grams per day) from solid foods. supplements are ok when necessary, but it is best if you can consume foods that are healthy with these essential nutrients in them....I gave a link below that has some foods and their fiber content.... Beans are usually a good source and my hubby and I (both banded 5/27/08) eat one cup of Kashi Go Lean Cereal each day and that 1 cup has 10 grams of fiber in it and 13 grams of protein... you will get more Protein if you have it with milk... cottage cheese is a great one for protein and coconut and coconut flour have large amounts of fiber in them as well (4 times that of oat bran). I find that I am much more regular and gut feels so much better when I actually eat the solid foods instead of using a supplement, it's better on your body too.... but I know sometimes there is a need, but just my opinion.

I really haven't been a fan of fiber supplements until recently. I've been using the Fibersure, clear fiber made by Metamucil, and I absolutely love it! The regular Metamucil is way to thick for me. The key is to drink lots of fluids. I use two scoops in my morning coffee/tea and it has been a Godsend.

Awesome, thanks for all the info!!! I checked out the site for foods with fibre, wow I had no idea so many fruits and veggies have all that fibre :o I have no problems getting lots of fibre into my diet now, but I was slightly concerned that after being banded that it would be difficult to eat enough. I think I will pick up some of that Benefibre and use it in the begining until I transition back to solid foods and start getting enough from actual food. Thanks again for all the advice.

You might also try a new drink mix by Kellogg's All Bran that has 10gm of fiber per serving. You'll find it right alongside the fiber supplements. It's just like Crystal Lite.

I would agree a supplement is good while on liquids or mushy.... although during those temporary stages, it is not as crucial to watch Protein and Fiber or calories.... but sometimes we all need a supplement... the Kellog's drink is a good thing to carry in your purse for those days when you just can't consume it and you need a way to get it in.

Thanks for the tip. I will try to find this item in my local stores. I know that we don't have the Kellogg's protien Water here in Canada, so I bought the Vitamin Aquafina water instead. I will be going to Walmart and GNC this weekend to get some protien/vitamins and fibre supplements.< /p>

Look for Isopure drinks at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe if you have one there. It has 40 grams of Protein per 12 ounces with 100 plus calories - it's great for the Protein and Benefiber rules!

Also eat a chewable fruit flavored Calcium supplement - also at Vitamin Shoppe, but am sure GNC will have all you need.

Kei,

I will take this list with me when I go shopping, thanks! I can always get the GNC rep. to explain what they have similar to these products, in the event they don't have this brand. Wish me luck

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
