Low Carb Banders Unite

Thanks for the update. I find myself in a similiar situation. As I read through the threads,it is hard to see success stories. For me, I am finding an increase in energy, have lost 15lbs cutting the carbs, and am eating better foods.

hi!

soo glad to have found this thread!! dont get me wrong...I *LOVE* carbs....but I cant lose weight with them ;( since I made the decision in April to get banded (7/1/10) I lost about 50 lbs pre op by low carbing and walking....its the only way I lose...

I also just found out I am diabetic...woo. hoo. I mean. REALLY?? I carried TRIPLETS and never even had gestational diabetes..I lose almost 50 lbs, and NOW I am diabetic? so it looks like this is the way for me... I dont keep really good count of my carbs, and I dont count the carbs in the good veggies, cuz, hey, broccoli is great, but I dont do any starchy carbs...and very little fruit, although we have 8 Tomato plants in our garden...wooot!

thanks for Lindas website, and looking forward to meeting ya!! OOH.....who's got that recipe for deviled eggs? ?? I could go for one now!!

Wow. I am glad to have found this thread also. I am made the decision to cut my carbs also. I have been banded 3 years, and feel like I need to take a different approach in helping me lose weight with the band.

It's something genetic or whatever. Some people can lose by cutting back calories. I've never been able to. The only time I've ever really lost any weight is when I cut out carbs.

Ohh well it works at least. TOM came today though and I gained 2 pounds with it. Just warning those that still get that... you do retain Water so don't get discouraged... it all comes off when that little visitor leaves. LOL!

I started low carbing when I hit a plateau, it is not the only way I lose but after my initial 44 lb loss it slowed for 3 weeks so I decided to go strict with Atkins and only eat 20 grams and 1000 cals so in 6 days I dropped 5 pounds. My plateau is over, made it to onderland today..198.8 was stalled at 202-203 for 3 wks. It's much easier now with the band. I Love my band!!!!

I am now 12 days into the Atkins diet and love it. In the past, I have done really well on atkins and find that it is pretty much the best way for ME to lose weight. I love that I can eat good, whole foods on the diet, and that my band stops me from overeatting. I always did well on atkins but overate just because I could.

I really dont count carbs strictly, but I know they are low. Here is a daily menu. This is pretty typical of most days.

b- atkins shake

l- chef's salad with spring mix, cheese, ham, egg and ranch dressing

d -about 5 oz prime rib, salad

(today i went nuts and ate 2 onion rings)

snack - atkins dessert made with 2 Tbs cocoa and 4 Tbs whipping cream

As much as I want to do a LOW CARB diet, I find eating Protein, gets "stuck." I am a 2 year bandster "loser",(not losing weight loser...). It is so much easier to eat "sugar" and carbs, since it goes down easier. That is my main problem. It is much easier to 'grab" something. When I sit down to(ie) chix or meat or even some fish, I invariably gulp too big of a bite and then have to run to the bathroom--to purge. Don't want to, but it happens. I am not too tight..have been back and forth to surgeon in the past 2 years..opened and tightened..I am some where in the middle now. Not lost ANY weight in a very very LONG time!!! Help!!

Hi Everyone,

I love the low carb diet, I love to edit traditional recipes into low carb recipes, I only have one problem. My one problem is my morning java. Oh well its not that big of a deal. I find that if I burn those carbs doing a half hour walk I can get away with my coffee thing.:)

With low carbs, do you watch out for the nitrates in sandwich style meats? I buy the no nitrites in hotdogs and meat when I can find them. Also, I know when I was doing low carbs before I could have the Beans such as pintos a little fresh fruit but no really carb things like rice, breads and pastas. So how many Proteins and how many carbs in a day??? I am new here, almost 3 weeks post band. First fill will be on March 3.

Hi there-

I am also glad to have found this thread... I was banded in June 2009 and although I have managed to lose 65lbs since then...I've still another 60 to go....and haven't been able to lose weight for a number of months now. I should be happy that I have't managed to gain weight but I have been feeling like a failure but the truth of it all is that I am a food addict.

I also have PCOS and eating carbohydrates seems to lead to sugar binges for me...and ends up with me choosing the easier band options i.e. chocolate and ice-cream (easy slider foods!)

I did low carb a number of years ago and lost 90lbs and my cravings for all things sweet were fairly under control...and my PCOS symptoms had calmed down alot...and my TOM was regular as clockwork.

I'm on day two of my low carb regime...ketostix were purchased last night so It's full steam ahead for the rest of the year. I'm tyurning thirty on August 25th and I am determined that I will not be fat for my 30th. I've already been working out regularly since the start of January and am doing my first 5K run tomorrow...Please god the excercise combined with this new low card regime will produce some results.

Yours in low carb....

Sara

Any help with cold cuts would be appreciated. Do you eat hard salami or bologna? Wrap this up in lettuce or use cheese as the bread? Also, and someone explain ketosis? What is it? How do you find out if your in it? Do you buy the strips at a pharmacy? What are you looking and hoping for?

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
