Tad,

For the most part my family has been quite supportive, but nervous for me at the same time, especially my younger brother-he does not want me to have this surgery at all, but now understands my decision. They were all very nervous about my decision to be banded in Mexico, but I feel that I have thoroughly checked out Dr. Ortiz and I am confident in my choice. Now they have come around too.

Some of my friends are a different story! I guess that is how you can determine your real friends. I only told a handful of friends. The one that is coming with me is supportive and even checked out my Dr. too to be sure. One of my other friends is the total opposite. She ridicules my decision, and has even told some other people after I asked her not to. I really wish I had not told her!!!

How about your friends and fam?

Ok, so I just tried the Protein Shake for the first time just now. I seriously can't do this. It smells like I don't know what and...just....gag. Seriously, I gagged. This is NOT cool. How are you all doing this?

PennyLane, My liquid includes cream Soups so I add Jay Robb Unflavored whey Protein Isolate to it in a blender after warming the Soup. I truly cannot taste the protein isolate, but I do not know about other brands of it. I tried Unjury chicken soup which already has the protein included and like you I gagged and threw it out.

Hey PennyLane and others gagging on the Protein Shakes, I FEEL your pain!! I have quite a few suggestions for you, but I have actually posted them four times now in different threads - I'm worried the moderators will think I am a spambot!! :smile2:

Anyway, here are the links to two of the threads that address the exact topic that you guys were looking for help with. There are a lot of great ideas on all types of shakes and all, PLUS you'll see both of my tips as well! Good Luck!!

Hi TeriVA,

Wow, I didn't Know about the immediate approval for BMI over 40, I have a BMI of 44 and BlueChoice Carefirst. I don't know if this applies to my insurance, they didn't give me that information. I will tell people who are interested to inquire about BMI's over 40. I will be banded on July 23rd and start my liquid diet on July 17. I am really freaking out about not being able to eat for 4 weeks. I hope I can do it, now when I smell food or co-workers offer me something I really get nervous about how am I going to be able to handle this starting the 17th. I'm excited but I love to eat.

How many of you other July bandsters have a post-op diet of clear liquids only for 2 weeks? I'm worried about not getting in any Protein.< /div>

I will be on Protein Shakes for two weeks after two days of clear liquids. If you are on clear liquids for two weeks try the Isopure . I bought a few bottles for after surgery and they have 40g of protein.....comes in several flavors. They also have the powder, but I didn't want to invest that much money in it. You can get it at GNC.< /p>

Are you sure you didnt misunderstand? Many (not me) are placed on a liquid diet, not a "clear liquid" diet. I did clear liquids the day before and 3 days afterwards.

No misunderstanding. The nutritionist said it very clearly before I was discharged and then gave me a print out that clearly states I can have only the following for 2 weeks post-op

sugar free Jello

broth

Sugar Free Popsicles

Water

decafe tea

uncarbonated, sugar free drinks

After my 2 week post-op appointment I will be able to add Protein Drinks and Tomato Soup.< /p>

I think I will try the Isopure...now to figure out which flavor...

You say THE Protein shake as if it must be a particular one? Im just using Boost that I had originally bought for my Dad, I had 2 six packs of the Protein Shakes. They dont seem as bad as I anticipated, but I have a slew of SF flavored syrups. I added raspberry and carmel to vanilla yesterday and today Im adding chocolate and carmel. I also have chocolate protein powder, but might as well try and drink up the protein Boost so it doesnt go to waste. Im not getting very many of them down very fast to be honest. I need to start forcing myself to get more protein down.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
