Drugs that counteract weight gain with anxiety and depression

Recommended Posts

I take celexa as well it does kill my appetite but it also kills my metabolism so I stay on the lower dose to minimize the impact. I believe depression does contribute to over eating, at least for me so I am happy with the band /celexa combination things are going well

I was watching a program on PBS called "Depression: Out of the Shadows".

Anywho' date=' as one who has struggled with anxiety/depression and obesity for many years I have also struggled with the fact that having anxiety and depression contribute to my weight gain and vise versa and also the drugs that I take may also play a part in my weight issues.

Back to the PBS show, there was a man on the show who had been profoundly depressed for a while and took a large cocktail of drugs that seemed to be working for him. He also took some medications that were to counteract some of the side effects of these drugs. He took a drug that I wasn't familiar with to counteract the weight gain side effect. Actually I'm going to try to go to the transcript of the show to see if I can find it but it was almost inaudible to me while watching.

I then did a little research on the web myself and came across a drug called "zonisamide or zonegran". Has anyone ever heard of this before or have you been on them for this reason or anyone on a similar type of drug to counteract the weight gain side effects?

I know there are certain antidepressants that specifically say they don't affect a person's weight but those are either drugs that haven't worked for me or not found to be true especially with the combination I take. And Wellbutrin has no affect on me whatsoever, just as an example.

Thanks ahead of time anyone who has any info and would like to share, brandyII.<img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/default smilies/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rolleyes2:' />[/quote']

Zonegran is an anti-seizure medication . I have been on it but I didn't lose any weight.

I've been on and off meds for depression, anxiety, and bipolar (which I don't believe I have) for 16 years. I am finally at a place where I have been tapering down and quitting my meds. I strongly recommend that anyone on antidepressants read "The Antidepressant Solution" by Dr. Glenmullen. Even if you aren't trying to go off your meds, but are thinking about switching to new meds, this book has some really good info.

Also, meds that most psychiatrists recommend that are weight neutral are welbutrin, topamax, latuda, and lamictal. Topamax can be added to your current anti-depressant to up its effectiveness. Many people lose weight on welbutrin and topamax.

Changing SSRI's can cause strong withdrawal symptoms and SSRI's are addictive. Yes addictive! I didn't believe that until I read "The Antidepressant Solution." Be careful with what you choose to put in your body. Brain chemistry is a delicate thing.

I have been having good success with high doses of fish oil to supplement my slowly tapered down dose of Celexa (And the various other meds I was on. I am down to just getting off Celexa now.). I take 7 Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega gelcaps a day. Yes, that is a lot, but it really is making a difference...and as an added benefit, it is good for your heart too!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
